Roy's Food Repair

This is one of my all-time favorite sketches. It was on The New Show, a short-lived sketch show on NBC. This appeared on January 13, 1984 and featured John Candy and Valerie Bromfeld, with appearances by Dave Thomas, Carrie Fisher, and Paul Simon.
Martian Accountant from the Bill Tush Show

This sketch is from the Bill Tush show that aired in 1982 on Superstation WTBS out of Atlanta. It features Terry Turner, who with wife Bonnie (also on the show) went on to work as a writer on SNL, then developed That 70s Show and 3rd Rock From the Sun. Also in the sketch is Eddie Lee. A follow-on pseudo promo features Bill Tush and Jan Hooks (of SNL and 3rd Rock fame).
Paul Simon with a pretzel problem
I always assumed that it was “Richie Aprile” from the Sopranos (David Proval) 🤯
Roy does magic with meat glue.
Maggie Wheeler one of the taco shell girls.
🤣🤣👍
John would keep my favourite Vortmaan cookies in his pantry when I'd come over. The Belgian ones with the jam. Miss you dude, I didn't even know you were famous until I was like 10
Where did you live at the time? Gabby Hoffman was in my class for about 1.5 years (6 th grade or so) I had no idea who she was because we grew up poor and didn’t own a VCR player so I never saw her movies. Same with Viggo Mortison, I’ve never see his movies because it’s not my genre, but I’ve met him a handful of times because he grew up in my area (Thousand Islands). Everyone was start struck, he was just another soft spoken, nice guy to me 🤷♂️
I miss him xoxo
Korton brought me here, but it’s the wrong Mountain Mike.
He just remembered he’s on Atkins
Roy’s food repair? Insane genius. No one does stuff like this anymore and Candy was the perfect guy for the role.
I was Roy's apprentice, it was my first job out of high school. I couldn't wait to be a food repair technician. But since then I've gotten my masters and my PhD and now I mainly do remodels and restorations...mostly on the classics out of Julia Child's food repair manual.
I bought a couple franchises and went into the mobile repair business, much more lucrative! 💰
Was this SCTV or SNL? I know he hosted SNL a few times and Paul Simon was on there a bunch too.
Neither SCTV nor SNL. It is from "The New Show", a short-lived comedy sketch show from early 1984 on NBC.
@@gooblymoo That's a curve ball I didn't see coming. Thanks!
I'll bet that Earol is glad Jim doesn't have a hunred customer's like Mountain Mike.
I'm a newspaper repair man. My shop was right next to Roys.
On the opposite side was there a magazine repair shop, or did you do the work on those too?
When SNL had real talent.
Note that this was not from SNL, but from the short-lived series The New Show, from early 1984. It was on NBC and was produced by Lorne Michaels, as is/was SNL.
he was a true entrepreneur
What do you hot like a 6 to 8 week program here? Real tough? Perfect for me!
I am a certified Sandwich repair man... I do removals of ham, mayonnaise, mismatched breads and fillings, and I even take unfinished sandwiches, dispose if the chewed bits and make a like new sandwich out of whatever has come together at that time.
No joke I went to the Sandwich, Massachusetts Police Station. Super nice guy there, gave me a bunch of patches and stuff.
I was surprised when Roy snapped at those two young girls. So out of character. But he redeemed himself with a heartfelt apology. I’d forgotten that everyone gets stressed - they have a “breaking point.” Good guy Roy is no different. He’s human just like the rest of us.
Nowadays a shop like that might be a good idea. Food prices being what they are.
I remember staying up late to watch SNL, Fridays, and John Candy on SCTV... I could have swore this was an SCTV sketch, but it was so long ago... I remember watching this on TV with my best friend of 40 years and thinking it was the funniest thing ever.
This was on The New Show in January 1984. This was unfortunately a short-lived series, on Friday nights on NBC. ABC's Fridays show had been canceled by then. The New Show was produced by Lorne Michaels.
Roy fixed my cookie given to me by grandma. RIP Roy!
Such a gentle soul and comedy genius, the world misses John Candy
*This was perhaps the most unique gimmick used as the basis for a comedy skit in TV history - either in Canada or the US.*
Holy crap this is genius.
Back when sketch comedy was actually funny. John we miss you !
"Oh, you kid."
I had no idea that the quality of the picture was that bad back in the 80’s.
This was recorded on a VCR in EP mode back in 1984. This was never released on DVD. I could have chosen not to upload it so people wouldn't get a chance to see it, but I clearly chose otherwise, and it appears many people have been happy to see it. I guess you're not one of those.
@@gooblymoo It seems like you read way too deep into my comment.
Literally one of the Best Skits EVER!!! 0:10 “Yeah Eggs, We fix ‘em” John just casually saying something so hilariously Ridiculous just caught me off guard that I actually Spit my “Cigarette” out of my mouth!!! Also, WTH dude, I Totally couldn’t believe they got Paul Simon to make an appearance that I convinced myself that the actor just looked & Sounded like him..
Roy is much better and less expensive than taking food back to the manufacturer service dept.
An old school Canajun
Is this guy still in business?I got a twinkie that was crushed in a snowmobile accident.
Sure. Roy can restore the outer cake deliciousness and either rehab or replace the filling. I had a filled donut damaged by my dog and he repaired it less than 2 days.
He can upgrade your Twinkie to a zinger for no up charge
@ Yes but the last time i had him do some zinger work when i got the bag home i was short one zinger.
@@joeadams-iv9yb - ohh yeah, that is a problem. Sometimes they’ll have to sacrifice one zinger to rebuild the other. It should have been on page 8 of the disclosure agreement 🤷♂️
Ray Gattis is something else
I did it take me 40 years to see *this* sketch? Awesome.
Ive never seen this before its early hours in the morning and im still laughing i love john candy im from london so thankyou for this ❤
Since this aired, Roy has added some new equipment to his shop, he was able to resalt a bag of pretzels for me. I brought it in a 10AM, he had it done for me by 5.
How much did he charge because I accidentally bought some unsalted popcorn kernels and didn’t know it until I popped it. It’s flavorless now 💔
"I've got a can of that color in the back"...
Look Paul if its still relavant you could take a bite of pretzel and then a teaspoon or so of salt as a chaser. I hope I am not too late.
Caution ⚠️. Beer in an overly salted pretzel environment will produce excessive foam.
MISS JOHN CANDY😢
Trouble is you can't trust food repair folks nowadays ! They don't even speak English....
Lincoln as a short Jew?
Whether it is watch repair, TV repair, computer repair, appliance repair or food repair, it’s always the same song and dance with the technician at the help desk.
There’s never going to be another John Candy. I miss him terribly
Yes indeed sir, he was a comedy genius. Very missed.
I can't stand Paul Siman!!
This guy knows his stuff. I was in the kitchen, about to eat some roasted garlic, when outta nowhere my light fixture falls and smashes my garlic to mush. I scraped it off the light fixture as best as I could and took it to Roy. He put it in a mold and froze it back into shape, my dinner was saved, and it didn't cost but five coins! I now only see Roy for my food repair needs.
Mountain Mike just wanted to come down to fart around with Jim and Earl for a while...he gets lonesome
LOL! 🤣👍
is that Paul Simon with the pretzels?
Nice guy, I like that guy ! "
So proud of John Candy!❤🇨🇦
He's right though, they could've gotten Hurt working on it themselves!!! 😮😮 😄 👍
Is that Chandler’s girlfriend Janice from Friends bringing in the taco shells?
Yes, known then (in 1984) as Maggie Jakobsen and later as Maggie Wheeler.
