Back in the day, if you wanted big tires larger than what was on vehicles at the time you had to source them from old machinery or rummage through junkyards, a tad more difficult but you'd turn up some cool stuff that might look good on your build. For instance, Bob Chandler found the tires for Bigfoot #5 from a trailer in a military junkyard, those turned out to be quite the find and made for a legendary truck.
At 2:09, notice the puncture in the left rear tire. I remember first reading about this truck in the last 70’s when it and Bigfoot were still on 48” tire, the same brand but Kong’s were the wider version. And this guy was using the 5 ton axles before Bigfoot if I remember the article correctly. Oh ya, when both went to the bigger tires, I seem to remembering Kong using a 72” version rather than the 66” version everyone eventually went too. Anyone else have these recollections?
I've seen a picture of King Kong next to Bigfoot, you can King Kong had bigger axles, shocks and wider tires than Bigfoot. They were both still on the 48" tires. I think that it was Awesome Kong II that had the 72" tires. It had a V12 Allison motor.
That's me!
Awesome video! What happened to the audio?
That’s why chandler went with gasoline back then those old diesels just didn’t have that quick torque to turn four big tires and get up any speed. Now today’s diesels that’s a different story
My cousin Steve Cain use to drive King Kong then awesome Kong. When he would come to visit his mom in Missouri when passing through I always got see the truck. I even helped switch the transmission in awesome Kong once. Not sure of the 2 Steves relationship now.
Simple times gone forever Happy i was a part of them
One of the best super TRUCKS videos!!!...no doubt !!
Is GREENLIGHT collectibles coming out with this version of KING KONG..??!!..it woud be knice

I remember king Kong was the first truck I seen on the a cover of a magazine...non the less love all early super trucks. It's all commercial now can't tell the difference between trucks now waaaa!!!
I want to know what exactly the tire sizes were on this beast
I use to work with Jeff Dane when I was stationed at Ft. Hood getting the rigs ready for the next event. I learned so much from Jeff and his crew about engines and drive train. spent many a Awesome weekend in the shop...
Omg dual tyres front and back ok thats cool
Isn’t this the same guy that built awesome kong 2 with the Allison V12?
Trevor Odom I believe so
Yep. Baddest one at the time. I'd like to know when he started I know everyone else's start year.

Yep, Jeff and Steve are my brother's.. I'm the youngest of 4 . The beginning all happened in Wisconsin, Germantown.
@sandyann225 then you (or the 3rd brother)were there in beaver dams ny in the early 80's with the truck. It was at lafevers lagoon. Steve autographed a photo with him. But I lost it in a fire instant Polaroid..lol . You all made my childhood awesome!!! Thank you!!!!
What year was this?
I've been able to meet Steve Dane and Mark Brandt. Both great guys.
WHERE'S THE SOUND ??!!
Looks like Super 8 footage. They don't record sound
Old video...no sound.
Is this truck still around? It looks so good.
No it's not. The original was totaled, when it was being transported. Jeff Dane did build another one that is now at the International Monster Truck Museum & Hall of Fame. facebook.com/MonsterMuseum/photos/a.662058663816122.1073741826.206707216017938/905002559521730/?type=3&theater
This was the first monster truck I saw in person when I was a kid at a tractor pull in Eddie Graham Sports Stadium Orlando Florida in the 80's
Cummins belong in goats not in fords loser
Well it's a 600 continental anyways soooo....
It's amazing to see this old footage here and thank you so much for the share! really cool!
The term Monster Truck was not used until vehicles started using the 66 x 43 x 25 Terra tires, any tire smaller was not considered a monster truck. The actual word monster truck was not used until around 1984. If you have a printed article using the word Monster Truck sooner then I recommend posting it.
I'm pretty sure the term was used pre-1984 when trucks had smaller tires than 66". I will search around and see what I can find. Regardless, while I don't recall the exact year of this video, I do clearly remember it pre-dated Bigfoot's first car crush.
According to Bob Chandler.... '83
@@orangecrate5895 ur usa1 dates are wrong but the term monster truck was 48in tires 4 wheel steering etc it predates the 66in tires by 3 or 5 years
Mr. Tura, do you know what the dates are on who crushed cars first? Chandler's first crush that was not in front of a crowd is a well documented 04/1981. Dane claims to be earlier (and I believe him). I would love to figure this out once and for all.
@@orangecrate5895 usa1 was on 66 by the winter83 84. The term monster truck was born in 78 79 truck with 48 n 4x4x4 then in 81 or so is when they tried out the 66 tires. The 2nd usa1 was in the 83 84 winter magazine
Old school monster trucks were a lot cooler.. The ones these days are just motors with wheels.. They're boring now.
I think he means the way the trucks look, not what the drivers can do with them.
Actually it is. A truck that looks like a dog, or spiderman that does ballet routines is boring. These were actual trucks doing what the were originally designed to do. Crush cars with real trucks. Not a roll cage with plastic body parts where it's cool to flip them and tear them up. The real ones you did not want to flip or damage. True works of art.
@@robbyparsonson2051 no that’s not it lol at all
I want build my truck to look like awesome kong
That truck looks awesome the way it sits. Perfect.
So awesome! Were these prior to Bob's video of car crush? I know it's debatable which happened first - either way I loved Awesome Kong growing up! This was such cool footage to see!
Yes Kong was the 1st to crush a car
Yes, Jeff Dane built and had the 1st monster truck to ever crush cars! This is home video of it! He drove me and my friend to high school in that, the whole school was watching, I was a little embaressed lol...coming from his little sis.
No I don't think so. Bob did his a bit earlier than this and the footage of original bigfoot pre dates the vid shown here. Not sayin in anyway that Jeff and Steve didnt have a very early start but by dates alone and from what Jeff spoke about briefly during the battle of the monster trucks the kong trucks came at a later date than Bob's.
@@wellthatsjustpeachy90 What's the date of the video shown here?
@@wellthatsjustpeachy90 chandler did his first in 1981
What year was this? Cool vintage footage.
Tim Tinsley 1835
@@Barsabus wrong
I think It will Be like 1981 Or 1979 I think?
Late seventies I'm pretty sure, that's my big, big brother Jeff next to Steve my other big brother! He's a lot older than me lol
this is awesome thx
i USED TO READ ABOUT THIS TRUCK AND bIGFOOT IN THE EARLY 80'S. IT HAD A DIESEL MOTOR IN IT
Steve Dane:I spent the weekend with you & Scott in the early 80's(82or83)& rode with you when you crushed the cars.I have a pic. of the truck on the cars & a topless girl sitting in front. You were at a race called "BODATIOUS" in Cartersville,Va. Steve "RABBIT" Hall
That's awesome! I'd love to see that piece of monster truck history!
Love to see old footage of monster trucks.
Is this THE Steve Dane who drove Awesome Kong back in the later 1980's?
Mistertbones Jeff Dane was awsome kong
Remember that there were multiple awesome kongs. Steve Dane, Steve Cain and Mark Brandt all drove the Skinny Awesome Kong.
Great old video. One of the true origonals. What ever happened to this old truck?
