Symphony No.2 in e minor is probably one of Rachmaninov's supreme achievements along with the quintessential Second and Third Piano Concerto, and Sir Simon Rattle's interpretation of the piece with the renowned LSO is, in my humble opinion, as excellent as the famous Previn's 1973 version with the very same orchestra. Thank you very much for sharing this priceless gem.

I have the CD. Gil's lazy vibrato disgraces the Korngold and Barber's concerto. Compare to Hilary Hahn's performance with St. Paul Ch.Orc. Night & day difference, brother.

Yes it’s gorgeous, and interpreted by Hahn is special. I think the main theme, repeated quite often, and sentimental in tone, was used in a Masterpiece Theater series that took place in Russia, set at the time of the Revolution and may have starred Sam Niell. It was based on the life of Sidney Reilly, the world’s greatest spy.

This concerto just sounds like a a snowfilled landscape.. So cold and yet so warm. Like the comfort of a fire in your own apartment when it's wintery and snowy outside. And it's also got like film music vibes to it I think. But it's so much more than film music, it's beautiful on it's own, it is the movie.
