France Canal Boating - Canal Lateral a la Loire 2014
Nice video , soon a group of friends from New Zealand, England, France and America will do a boat trip in Burgundy like you. Would you be opened to share your spreadsheet and give us good advice on where to stop and what to see / expect ?
Please take the unrequested music off, let's just have the sounds of the engine and canal bank sounds. or the piece and quiet as you would expect on a canal.
Chouette ! Merci pour les souvenirs qui ont été aussi les miens une époque.
Great video, awesome trip! Thanks for sharing!
A lovely video.
It was a very inspiring video. Hoping to do this myself, with my wife. Thank you for sharing.
Fun
Lovely video did you need a licence
Tim, No you do not need a license. The boat providers provide the necessary briefings. Do the letters PSI mean anything to you ?
Nice video of one of my favourite parts of the world but, god how I hate having portrait video interspersed. You are filming a landscape - film it in Landscape!
It’s hilarious looking back at all the panic, the masks, the talk of ‘staying safe’ etc - all for a sniffle that had a 99.9% survival rate!!! What a swindle!!
Version without music would be easy to understand
We are looking at doing this region next year and trying to decide between the Nivernais, Joigny to Corbiny or the Lateral from Braire to Dompierre. Any preference? THanks
You don’t say how long you are going on the canals, but a one week one-way trip from Corbigny to Decize (or Dompierre) is our favorite because of the lock flight and tunnels although Corbigny port is harder to get to than the others. If you are more interested in wine, then one-way Briare to Dompierre or vice versa) would be our next favorite. Going down hill (entering a full lock and leaving when it is empty) is easier on the ‘crew’ than going up hill (enter empty and leave when full).
Oops, sorry. We have 10 days. We want to do a one way trip so the two options the boat company recommended are the Nivernais, from Joigny to Corbigny or the Loire Lateral from Briare to Dompierre. Thanks@@dontato8675
@@dontato8675 We are now looking at a 10 day one way trip with 2 options. Migennes to Tannay or Tannay to Decize. Which section of the Nivernais would you prefer?
Tannay to Decize would be our choice. Past Corbigny, a series of locks at Collancelle on the Nivernais is very interesting. There is a super pottery half way up the series to the Etang de Baye, that is worth a visit while you are waiting for the locks. Enjoy!
Great tour. Thank you!
Music waaay too loud and spoiled an otherwise great video blog
You should flog (Sell) your itinerary and schedule just a thought it looks rather well planned. I live on a barge in the UK near Ely I love the life on the river. Some examples to be found here: www.youtube.com/@TROGART/videos
Very well. really liked your content. Searched for French canals and youtube shwoed me your video. Love from Omar Sher.
4 weeks as stated at beginning or 4 months as stated at the end
It was 4 weeks of cruising. The comment I made at the end was “a whole month”, but it wasn’t easy to hear! Thanks for your comment
Very well done and interesting movie. I just disliked the caricatural "french" music.
Can one swim in the canals?
No. the canals are quite dirty and not good for fishing either.
Hi..where is this place in appenzel
We spent a week there 8 years ago and can't remember exactly where the photo was taken. Perhaps sending a screen shot to tourist information would help.
Thank you for posting your video. My wife and I are considering our first canal boat rental and doing so on the canal du midi.
Loved your video. Very informative. Now that you nearly experienced all the French boat canals which is the most scenic canal and yet close to towns for sightseeing, do you suggest for 4/5 nights of a boat cruising?
beautiful video!
I reckon the plane trees dying by fungus is probably something more than a random fungus. Fungus operates to deal with dying things as do viruses and bacteria so something is killing the trees. Let's see how the new ones fare.
To replant a monoculture of trees is ridiculous. They will be susceptible to another blight.
Great video! We cruised the Holland canals on the same boat this summer and absolutely loved it!
So glad I found you guys!!! Do you know if a boat that's 65' in length, 14.5' beam, 10.5 bridge clearance and 3.5' draft, can navigate this route?
Check out www.french-waterways.com/practicalities/canal-depths. or vnf.fr
@@dontato8675 Thank you so much
This was an awesome video
which route would you suggest we take ( most scenic and just 5 - 6 days) if we were to do just 1 canal boat trip ( bucket list) in our lives? You seem to have done several. Your suggestions please
It is difficult to go wrong in France but we really the like Burgundy region. It is quite central so this route could fit in with your other plans. We have been happy with Locaboat after many trips and find their service quite consistent. Departing from the Locaboat base in Corbigny, located on the Canal du Nivernais, head south towards the Canal Latéral à la Loire and then to Dompierre-sur-Besbre. This route is partially covered in our video Canal Crusing in France - The Burgundy Circuit. You can see the scenery in our earlier video Canal Boating Nivernais 2018.
What was the boat rental company?
Locaboat Holidays. They have offices all over France. We are not sponsored in any way. There are other boat companies that have different configurations.
Great video, we just did much the same trip on a Penechette 950e, we had a windy trip across the Etang de Thau though. Nice to see the bits beyond Argens. We did an extensive Vlog too if you are interested :-)
Absolutely stunning, so interesting to hear the history😊
What a relaxing holiday, thank you so much for sharing your videos 😊😍
Glad you enjoyed the video. Yes, it is relaxing and a great way to just enjoy the French countryside.
Great video, much enjoyed. We have just returned from the Canal Du Midi, Carcassonne to Port Cassiferers, now we've booked again, , Vermenton Nivernais to Tannay. Have you navigated any of this route ?
69th comment 😏
Just gorgeous 😮😍 I hope my boat can fit in those canals
holly smokes, thanks for the video; place looks sad, sorrow, narrow, no fun,monotone...and just too too long, takes for ever, like a prison; guess you couldn't pay me to go there, how much did it cost altogether, and would you go there for a second run? at least you won't get lost,i think ; and how do you come back from that one way, like a one track train line... lol; well, thanks, another couple of my 68yo age, who lived in France, told me about it,they wanted that all 4 of us went there, and i am looking at videos, and thanks to the videos maybe not.
Glad you found the video informative. Best to decide now that it isn't for you.
So sad such a brilliant trip was clouded by fear.
The fear added a piquante aspect to a gentle cruise.
Over the next three years all the single locks on the canal du midi will be automated. I live aboard a 15m cruiser in Colombiers, just west of Beziers . Done about 800 locks through France and Belgium totally alone. Beziers and foncerannes is the slowest part of the entire French canal system to navigate. Good video.
I know it’s a year ago you produced this , but fantastic info and showing what’s available.
Great video Don! Is the Thames too narrow for such a ship to turn around and go forward instead? Cheers, Roland
There was not enough room and there is too much traffic to turn around before the bridge and there was only 1 tug. The ship would have rotated further down the Thames with the help of another tug.
Nice video thanks for sharing. Can't wait to get back to France on my boat
Thanks for all your videos and I like the music in this one. I hope to go back down la rance again next year . Thanks again
Thanks for your video and tips. If you should suggest a canal between "lateral a la Loire" or "Nivernais" , which one would you suggest ?
We think the route from Corbigny to Dompierre with Locaboat is the best section or Tannay to Decize with LeBoat
@@dontato8675 thanks a mil. I have cruised with Locaboat in 2007 from Corbigny to Baye Lake and back . Indeed that was a great experience in a great place, I am closed to book Joigny>Corbigny but at the end I started looking to Dompierre>Briare : should be easier and quieter (no river) ... I will have onboard a 5 years old girl + a 15 years old dog .
@@marcogrosso3410 Lateral ala Loire is rather boring.
we are watching this from NZ & loved your video of your trip cruising the canals . We are planning on doing similar later this year and wondering to buy or rent..... It is inspiring to see you guys making most of life during Covid lockdowns :-)
We recently looked at buy vrs rent and and decided to rent for many reasons (convenience, one way trips, maintenance costs, insurance and licensing costs all in French, and exploring new areas). Don BTW Do you have relatives in New Plymouth ?
Wow this is magnificent Don. Do you have recommendations on any good companies to rent from?
Thanks Sam. We have been very happy with LocaBoat and before that with LeBoat. Most important though is the configuration of the boat and the location of the canal.
Do we need a licence And where to get it Thanks
So far we have not needed a license, but double check with the hire company first .
A trip to be done
Thanks you very much Don ! I'm Dom .
Wonderful!
Great vid. The UK canals are good, but the French ones are even better.
Both countries have there own special qualities.
I did this section solo back in 1988 at the end of a 4-week Locaboat cruise starting in Bar-le-Duc. Great photography! (Boats are a lot fancier now!)
But not too fancy. Update for this year... Locaboat no longer sells the Inclusive Pack including fuel. One has to pay by the amount consumed. Around 4L/Hr.
@@dontato8675 Locaboat tried to pull that charge on me many years ago and I proved that if their 4L/h rate was accurate, I would have run out in 2 weeks. They could not refute my calcs, so I didn't have to pay. I measured the tank volume and dipped it every few days. I think the consumption on the 930 boat was less than 2.
