Just another plant that help us win ww2 gone what will we do next time with all these plants gone
Americans like to build something nice and then blow it up.
When I went to college, I remember going downtown to Hudson’s to pick out my own set of “real” luggage, instead of having to borrow pieces from others in the family. That was one of my graduation gifts.
I was in Hudsons on Woodward , now that was a depeartment store , how beautiful and grand it was , Detroit never should of lost it , l loved it and im from Canada...
Now a football stadium....ford field now stands on this place
Nope ! Qucken Loans aka Rocket financial ! FORD Field is where Hudson's Warehouse Used to be !
Nope ! Quicken Loan/ RocketMortgage's multi use is there ! FORD Field is where Hudson's Warehouse Was !
And equal pay of all
I hope Ford and gets back in on the competitors of the new Rollin
Right new mussle car and truck era
😂"It Was So Magical And Any Body Or Felt Like They Just Wanted To Be Somebody Even If It Hadn't Happened Quite Yet!?"Macy's In Manhattan N.Y.Is Still Standing And Serving 11 A Million People Macy's In The Malls Were Never Meant To Hold The Same Magic Touch!!!'
I remember going to Hudson's as a teenager with my mother. The bronze elevators & escalators. The use of sparkling stone & rich varnished woods. I would pull her upstairs to the restaurant & feast on strawberries as big as apples, sweet as candy & watch the never ending train of customers waiting their turn to be served. It was a wonderful place, full of expectations that magically always seemed to be fulfilled. An era of the great department store now vanished forever, replaced by, although convenient, the cold impersonal world of Amazon & PayPal.... Still I'm grateful I was able to be part of Hudson's heyday.
When cars were actually made to be serviced by the owners. They cared. Days are long gone, plastic junk cars stamped out now, can’t even change your own oil.
Thank you for this post😊 this made my heart smile😊
If you had a job at one of the auto plants, you are definitely Blue collar royalty in those days but because of greedy unions the pensions are gone forever
greedy special interests lobbying elected officials, outsourcing and automation was the cause you dolt.
God Bless and Merry Christmas will never get old or die.
Watching this here on the 25th anniversary of it's demolition (Oct 24, 1998) and from what I can find online your news story has the only video footage from inside Hudson's department store while it was still open and in business. Thank you so much for posting this from someone who was never alive to experience this place!
My mom worked in the building next door. We always got dressed up to visit Hudsons to go the restaurant. Can't imagine that now.
As a child we weren't allowed to go downtown unless we were all dressed up.
Never forget what they took from us
I worked he in the late 90's. I remember the casinos were supposed to be built down there but they never did develop the area. I only worked here for about a year but it still remains in the fore front of my memories. So many good times here.
God Bless Mopar! I am thankful
Read about this place, it was absolutely massive.
Wonder if our old 1978 volare was made there.
I miss the Santa Claus Land and from the 1970s. I still have the photos of myself and Santa when they had that Irish cop as Santa. Also used to run around Hudson's quite a bit as a little boy, and managed to sit upstairs in Joseph Hudson's waiting room while I got a candy from a secretaries. Then I would be waiting for my mom to come upstairs to pick me up . Joseph Hudson was a very nice man , and I remember him always saying hello to my mother because I used to be a regular customer getting lost in the store . I do remember running around as a little boy with David Ruffin's two children when we were real little. I also remember using the oak elevators with my mom and grandma. Seeing this makes me sad because I remember my mom and grandmother going on the bus and taking us to Hudson's. My last memory of Hudson's Was 1980 of Christmas, and my next door neighbor had treated me to lunch up in the 13th floor. I had one of my favorite desserts which was chocolate mousse. Unfortunately they'll never be another store like that again, and I was glad at least I was old enough to remember Santa Land and that beautiful store. I feel sorry for the younger Generations because unlike us we have the memories they only can see it through a video.
This is what made Christmas incredible. So sad how we get away from this.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Those were the days of classic department stores of big cities. You will never see department stores like Hudson's ever again. So very sad. Even the department stores at suburban malls no longer have any class.😪😪
Many cried when it was imploded.
Blacks shop lifting killed Detroit.
Dodge main...Hard times/good times in Michigan..Nothings the same in S Michigan...
What about Hot Fudge? Remember that show? It was on channel 7
What happened to Bill Bonds and Jerry Hodak?
Bill Bonds died in the 2000's.
very cool piece, thanks.
I shopped there on my lunch hour in 1979 and it was grand. I was only 19. I’d take that beautiful oak elevator to the ladies apparel; bought myself a pair of suede high heel sandals. I had lunch at the Hudson restaurant. Oh how I miss those innocent years but so glad I was there for it. It’s so different today - it’s no longer a kind welcoming world anymore. So sad!
Why doesn't the news do stories like this anymore?
That footage of Albert is priceless!
This was the last gasp of the old downtown Detroit at the peak of crack era. On the bright side: downtown Detroit is born again, it wil never be like the old times, but nothing can be, by definitions, everything changes.
Thanks for posting these Erik! great to see Albert and the band off stage! some great memories seeing them around the same time.
Missed seeing the world's largest American flag hanging on Hudson's Woodward Avenue side.
Amazing
where many of the 68-70 chargers were built, others at st. louis
I own a 1969 Dodge Charger RT/SE that was built at Dodge Main in Hamtramck. In October of 1998, I made the three day round trip from my home in Minneapolis to the site of Dodge Main in my Charger. When the Charger and I arrived in Hamtramck, I had to go into a local bar to ask some older guys where the plant used to be. They told me, and I then drove the Charger over there and fastened a laminated plaque to the fence surrounding the site. On the plaque was a simple message to whomever may come by to read it, expressing my thanks and admiration to all who worked there and built my car which had returned home for its thirtieth birthday. I used original 18 gauge wire salvaged from my car during the restoration process to fasten the plaque to the fence, then left the cold and deserted site and made my way home to Minneapolis. I would like to sincerely thank the men and women of the Chrysler Corporation who created the finest realization of performance and styling in the history of the American automobile: The 1969 Dodge Charger. God Bless you all!
I’m a young 43… My grandma took me there where I was a little guy to shop and see Santa Clause. Christmas at Hudson was certainly a site to see.
As legendas em português estão horríveis. Para fazer assim, era melhor não colocar. Fica melhor ouvindo o som original em inglês.
This is WAY more than 10 years ago!
Erik you are a legend on Detroit TV. What year was this? I'm guessing 1989
I remember Hudson's Downtown Detroit store. I used to work for Hudson's Eastland. I worked from 1975 until 1980 when Marshall Fields bought Hudson's Eastland. Then Macy's bought Marshall Fields. It seems that Hudson's became Macy's. I miss Hudson's.
When was this filmed?
Christmas of 1982. Store closed in early 1983.
I remember that WD-40 ad almost word for word.
I can remember going downtown as a young kid in the 50s' and shopping at Hudson's. It was impressive. Wards was on Gratiot and I think 6-mile rd. We bought our suites at Robert Halls. I also remember going downtown for the Thanksgiving parade.
I, used to work at Montgomery Wards, Gratiot and 7 Mile Road Store on Detroit's Northeast Side.
I can't imagine what Bill Bonds would have had to say about Trump, especially OFF camera. LOL
Three generations of my family were privileged to work there. This world class organization gave us all precious memories to last a lifetime!!
It's implosion had me interested
