Your Therapist Needs Therapy podcast Ep. 80 - Thanksgiving Bonus Episode: Turkey, Trump, and Trauma
Jeremy chats about healthy boundaries with family of origin and how to navigate family gatherings in these trying political times. He covers how chosen family is more important than biology, why this political season may be more emotionally (physically, mentally, spiritually) fraught than previous ones, and how to make your holiday escape hatch (the blog post mentioned). Jeremy also talks about some of the religious trauma of another Trump presidency, and some of the realistic expectations to set when dealing with christian nationalists this holiday season.

      @@JoeAlbertan using music as an escape can be super beneficial, that is true. Listening to music can help put us into a specific mood, or it can validate a mood we are already in. I love Pink Floyd and System of a Down, and to say music isn't political would be to miss the point. Paul Ryan saying Rage Against the Machine is his favorite band comes to mind. And therapy is political, so, I'll get political because helping other people has become politicized. If that's not your jam, lots of other content out there for you! 6:37 And Democrats oppose school choice. There’s blame on both sides. Let’s start working together, instead of blaming all of our problems on the other political party. “We, the people”, need to work together and not just rely on the government for support. IMO…

    • @wellnesswithjer
      @wellnesswithjer 3 місяці тому

      @@justinholliday8047 Thanks for the comment, this a great topic to dive into! Democrats oppose school choice because it is bad! It harms students who have special needs, leads to decreased property values as public schools lose public funding, and siphons resources from lower income to higher income families. School choice got its start as a way to get around desegregation, as infamous religious leaders like Jerry Falwell Sr got into politics after Brown v Board of Education. Also, I see this fallout as a religious trauma therapist, most school choice money goes to religious institutions, where lack of oversight leads to systemic abuse and predators being on staff. The profession most likely to abuse children is religious leaders. Additionally, the percentage of religious schools that take these federal funds but do not let children opt out of religious courses (as is required by law since they take federal money) is very high. School choice is bad, like really bad, and so the "both sides" falls apart here, as it usually does since it's a logical fallacy. School lunches are good! Higher test scores, fewer behavioral issues, higher rate of learning objectives met, lots of data on free lunch and breakfast being really great! So, I agree to working together and for future generations, support kids getting a great education in a safe environment! That means no to school choice and yes to school lunches

      @@wellnesswithjer valid points. I guess my general stance is, whenever the government gets involved, no matter the circumstance or issue, the issue never gets resolved. Similar to how the pharmaceutical industry never develops a “cure” for an illness, but they seem to always find a way to “treat” the symptoms (by developing prescribed medication that you’ll need to purchase monthly). The problem is, the politicians (on both sides of the aisle), trick people into thinking that they have our best interests in mind. When in actuality, what they truly want is for us to be totally dependent on their programs, services, and handouts. Even though they are providing these services with our own tax dollars….. Sorry, I got a little sidetracked, lol. In regard to the school choice issue, it might not be the right solution for every student or family. But I wholeheartedly believe that parents of students, should at least have the option to decide whether their child should attend the school a couple blocks away from where they live. Or if they would rather send their child to different a school in another district. Now don’t get me wrong, it would be up to the parents to make the necessary transportation arrangements for their child to attend the school of their choice. With freedom of choice, comes personal responsibility. I guess what I’m an advocate for is the freedom to choose. And schools should be held accountable for how well the students are performing. Our country’s teaching philosophy isn’t beneficial to the actual students. It seems like we are teaching them only what they need to know to raise standardized tests scores. Which then determines how much money is allocated to that school. But they aren’t being taught practical life skills, like how to balance a check book, fill out a tax form, how to give a PowerPoint presentation, how to sell yourself in a job interview. I also think that we need to end the tenure status that so many professors have. A professor shouldn’t have immunity from consequences just because a they have taught for ten years at the same university. Anyway, I am looking forward to hearing your thoughts and any counter arguments you might have. Honest dialogue, and actually listening to different opinions is how we learn and grow as a person and hopefully as a country. Thanks sharing your thoughts. Oh, and Tool, is worth reacting to again.

    This song has been stuck in my head the last few days and over this time I have dissected the lyrics. As someone who left an abusive and toxic relationship that was potentially building up to physical ( lots of holes in walls and cornering and berating) I went to google to see if anyone was talking about how problematic these lyrics were. Your video is the only thing that came up with the topic. I thoroughly enjoyed what you had to say, and very much agree that Noah is a great artist and this is just a story about a bad situation. However in our country, not enough people have the emotional IQ to realize that and separate the artistry from the story.

She goes through a lot of trauma, is able to leave her abusers easily enough, and is self-actualized by the end….. without having the therapy or resources to recover like a person really would. I enjoyed Everything Everywhere All At Once because even with the camp of it all, so many people related to themes of the film. I still love certain tragedies such as Grave of the Fireflies, but that’s because I cared about the characters and the movie was made by someone who had a clear idea of what it was supposed to be.

      I think you can relate to Bella a lot because of the suspension of disbelief, in that it allows a lot of interpretation for any coming of age type development. From a trauma lens, sure, not super realistic, but as a former fundamentalist I related a lot to her story, even if that isn't a specific plot point. So, I think Bella is super relatable, but also that it's so big as to not be particularly realistic from any one lens. But it's a surreal film, it isn't trying to be scientifically accurate. Way more relatable characters than in some other Lanthimos films

    I’m involved with many different online community’s within the atheist UA-cam world. (I also do a lot of archaeology & charity yt) There’s a bit of anger in them towards god/faithful and mostly we joke, we reassure with good information, provide resources and one of my favorite things is helping people be comfortable in their skins and find joy in the world. That’s what I hate most about faith, teaching people nothing good exists without god. The communities provide a place for open discussion about the Xian taboo subjects too, which helps people gain a level of comfort in the world without god’s.

      Agreed. I see so many clients who have no idea these communities exist, and one of the big concerns leaving the church is the lack of community. So lovely when people find a place where they can connect authentically

    I fell into thinking I was an empathic person. I was in my late 30’s before I heard about the responses of abused children having to be aware to stay safe. More people should learn this imo. Those who cause, those who suffer & those who don’t directly associate with this, can all benefit from having the information imo.

    Dr Joshua Bowen has many books covering the topic of slavery in the Bible for anyone looking for top notch scholarship on the subject. He also has the atheist handbook to the Old Testament books that clarify the biblical texts, translations and so much more.

    My dad was number 6 of 11. They all have pairs within the siblings, of best buds. My sister & brother do as well and my mom’s mom & her brother we’re forever friends too. Mine is the neighbor girl from my childhood home. I’m her daughters godmother & she shares my middle name. I think life long friendships are a special thing that too many people don’t ever get to experience. I’m hoping your family is like mine in continuing with the tradition and all the good things that come with it ✌️💕🤘

    I’m digging the imbedded moral/social messages. What ages would you think too young for the movie? I emergency babysit for my neighbors when they get first responder calls and their youngest is 5. Just curious if it would be age appropriate. Thanks.

      My five year old loved it, wasn't scared (he gets to watch other media as well, so spiderman etc isn't scary for him either). My three year old also was fine, he got nervous a few times, but he's brave when his big bro tells him it's okay. Kids are obviously variable based on what level of media they are used to seeing, but as far as kids movies go, pretty safe bet I would say.

    Spirituality has some nuances that don’t quite make absolute exclusion a great idea imo. I’m not necessarily talking about anything supernatural (imo reality is reality and magic is not real) but there is a human experience. I don’t believe we fully understand what the extent of that is. I feel the word “spirituality” gets instantly discredited when absolutes are in play, which can overlook the discoveries of some of those things we don’t know yet. In a way a “spiritual” experience can imprint on your emotions as greatly as fear can. It’s “real” enough to the person that they alter reality to support the feeling. It’s often the teachings of the organizations that make spirituality harmful, not the fact that the person has spirituality. I come to this because one of our first brain functions is dreaming in the womb. Dreaming is necessary & for all we know there’s a need for “daydreaming” & spirituality might be an aspect of that. Hypothesis, but it is not unreasonable.

      Yeah, there are a lot of semantics at play around the word "spirituality" and certainly around "magic." I think even I use them differently given the context of who I'm talking with. I think scientific discourse is about the pursuit of knowledge, and within the scientific method is the implication that we definitively don't know everything, and likely never will. As far as dreaming in the womb, I guess I would just caveat that as a hypothesis, and a relatively weak one. We see some things that might look like dreaming in an adult in developing bodies and apply the adult reasoning, but babies would not dream as we do, and their brain waves are basically in a trance like state until around age 5. I'm vastly oversimplifying, which I guess is also what the "dreaming in the womb" is also just a vast oversimplification of something we can't truly test to know for sure.
