Lake Ingalls & Headlight Basin, Teanaway, WA - Oct 2024
Spectacular place to take in fall color in Washington State, with golden larches and colorful meadows. Perhaps the last of the beautiful sunny snow-free days of this year (?) The larches are just past peak and starting to drop their needles. There are a few yellow-green larches high up in the basin, but most are transitioning from golden to brown. The basin is beautiful with yellows, oranges and reds, and in stark contrast to the snow-free surrounding peaks.

This was an unexpectedly beautiful spot - do not miss the descent into the lake basin to explore the lake and the larch grove. From the pass overlooking the lake, there are amazing mountain views, and a sea of golden larches below to the northwest. Glacier Peak and Mt Rainier are both visible (glowing in the fading light as sunset approached), as is Mt Daniel and other familiar peaks. The trail...

Another "go now" - the larches are a peak, mostly golden, and no significant needle fall so far (although gusty winds yesterday might change that). You arrive at Rainy Pass and face the "Cutthroat or Heather-Maple" decision. At least in the early to mid-afternoon, the choice is clear with Cutthroat this time of year. You will have sun and backlite larches pretty much the entire trail, while Hea...

Nobody on this trail, and it was amazing! This is a great alternative to Skyline Divide, whose access road is currently closed due to a washout (~3.5 miles in... could bike the rest of the way). After an ascent through trees, a truly stunning ridge walk with in-your-face views of Mt Baker, even closer than those afforded by Skyline. Beautiful fall color (red, oranges) and fresh snow on Baker an...

Stunning clockwise loop through larches, high meadows and scree below Arethusa Cirque. The clockwise direction offers backlit larches the entire hike, although you will be shooting into the sun. This is a moderate hike - we logged ~5 miles and 1200 ft RT including parking about 1/4 miles away from the trailhead. Road construction around Highwood Pass has resulting in very limited parking - get ...

Moderate hike to a stunning lake basin on the boundary of Banff and Kootenay National Parks with a soaring, craggy headwall and golden larches aplenty. A classic! This is an amazing larch hike out of Banff National Park, with the trailhead at Moraine Lake. One must reserve a shuttle to the lake, and the need to reserve a return shuttle means you have to time out your hiking time in advance. This was a day of mixed sun and cloud, leading to stunning mountain, sky and meadow views in the alpine. It was too windy to ascend Sentinel Pass at the en...

Maybe the best lookout around Mt Rainier, at least for sunset, with full-on sun on the southwest slopes of the mountain as the sun sets. Wonderful! Views to Adams, Helens and Mt Hood as well. Hike from Paradise Visitor's Center up to Panorama point, and then about 1/3rd of the way up the Muir snowfield to get about the fog which was otherwise creating murky conditions for much the trail. Berry season! The hike starts in meadows choked with berries, and hints of fall color.
