Major Kayak Beat Down in Classic Closed Hole: Duncan's Dunkin - 2nd Trip Canoeing Big Creek - 2003
July 2, 2003 - The first real rapid on Big Creek is a classic closed hole. Walled off on both sides, it is pretty sticky. Duncan got caught by it. I had to stop filming and go drop a rope to him. As I did that, I could see him tumbling under the water and he did not break the surface. Ultimately, the rope helped him out and he continued on. However, the last clip shows Simon, who forgot his life jacket, wearing Duncan's Hi Float. That's because Duncan took the very easy walk around the rather unscoutable and difficult 3rd gorge.

May 22, 2003 - Lots of rain in the Big Frog Wilderness brought Big creek up to a decent level. This is the creek that flows into the lake across from the Ocoee takeout. We had scouted only 100 yards of this miles long creek so we did not know what was downstream. It is a fun run!

May 18, 2003 - Little River Canyon has a plethora of runs that go at different levels. When LRC is too big, check out Johnnies Creek or the Teddy Bear. When they're too big, check out Wolf just downstream of Little River. If it's too big, look at Upper or Middle Johnnies & Upper Teddy Bear. But when even they are too big, Hicks Creek may be good to go. Rob Maxwell, Hank Sherrod, Milt Aitken

May 8, 2003 - Tennessee was flooded. In a moment of weakness, I accepted Louie's suggestion of some new water - John's Branch of the Santeelah, which was something more than 4000 feet above sea level. Pretty high for a NC whitewater run. It was somewhat steep, continuous, and small and boney. We should have put in much farther down the creek. Dooley Tombras, Mike Lewis, Milt Aitken

Wish I find a better quality copy to view.
Wow, a video of Jim Michaud paddling when he was still young! When was this recorded?
Not too long after the world was created. A little later as he had to wait for the rains to erode the land and make rivers so he could paddle them!
Many a happy moment spent paddling five falls in the mid 80s. I paddled a perception dancer. Things have changed since then.
Among other things, the logs that made Right Crack benign flushed out and now it's a boat eating death trap!
@ a few people I know died in five Falls. The first time I ran corkscrew, I ended up washing through the hole under hydroelectric rock. Everyone thought I was dead, but I popped out the other side none the worse for the wear. We would run middle crack either by holding our paddles vertically or throwing them through the crack too friends downstream. Then we’d paddle back up in and do pop-ups in the drop.
I have had the fortune not to be there when someone died. But I was there for Rod Baird's near drowning in Hydro and I thought he was dead. This was made from my footage: ua-cam.com/video/9YiT5sGVbiY/v-deo.html
When Kendos ruled the world !!!
You OK buddy?
I'm OK, Buddy!
i love these old school vids...much more entertaining and relatable than watching dane vids...;) also interesting to see the old school boats being paddled from the front like i learned to and explains why i seem so out of place in the newer flater stern world of boats
Was that a Dagger Ocoee that you were paddling, Milt? I thought that you preferred the longer canoes, and that shorter boats like that were more Oci-One Kanubi's territory?
I paddled an Ocoee when I thought I might be bored. And, as you can see from this video, I wasn't bored that day! People consider the Ocoee to be long nowadays.
Nice shot of the jawbone pothole. I know a guy who got vertically splatted into that thing in a prijon hurricane and got stuck. It was a bit distressing when he peeled out into the rapid, but didn't make it to the bottom. Then no one could find him. He was just chilling in his boat waiting for rescue. He could hear people running up and down the bank, but they could not hear him over the rapid noise.
I was about to say I know a guy that told that same story, and then remembered you went by Brad back in the boater days 😂
@@PaddleWhore Chris, as soon as it warms up a bit, i'll be back out there.
Hey Mike Yee what canoes are you all paddling? Some of them look suuuuper dry in the big stuff! Nice lines!
There's a red canoe with aluminum gunwales that is definitely a Whitesell. Mikey is paddling a Dagger, which might be a Prophet. I can't endorse wooden gunwales on a boat that big on abusive rivers like those. They break.
This is so so sick, thank you for sharing
There are some creeks that just are not worth boating... no matter how close to home they are.
Where is the video of you in that hole under the bridge?? ;-)
Nobody there to film it. Don swam above the bridge and his boat was headed for the river. I got caught and hammered in the hole. Don got a rope to me and dragged my carcass to shore then went off to find the boats (my canoe was stopped by a pipe across the creek. His C1 was pinned on the golf cart bridge). Someone saw his unoccupied boat headed downstream and called 911 before I ran the bridge rapid. Park Service showed up and found me still exhausted on the bank. An ambulance showed up & I declined transport. Park Service gave me a hard time about that, wanted I.D. that wasn't on me. Demanded my SSN which started a big argument about whether I was required to give that or not. (I won). Park Service met Don at Columns Drive. Wife picked me up and Don drove the takeout shuttle vehicle home. Worst ass whuppin I've ever received on a river. Worse than Grindle Falls, worse than swimming from 2nd drop Lost Paddle to just above 4th, Worse than breaking my hand on Overflow.
Chad Spangler. He still loves those Pyranha open boats.
Well, they sure can surf a hole!
loved this video. Finally found the song at 8:25. Anyone know the song/band?
Has ryobi discontinued this model? I would buy one right now if it was dual fuel and had electric start with a powertool battery. Those features are uncommon with smaller generators but appreciated by people with mobility issues.
Yes. The last warranty claim resulted in a remote stop replacement.
No matter how many years go by... the ATL Canoe Club always delivers. And for them...it's Nope Creek.
I warned them. I got my ass seriously beat in the hole below the bridge... AFTER my buddy swam from one of the ledges before the bridge. I was chasing his boat when I got caught. No good deed goes unpunished!
You would think that after 50 years kayakers still put their car keys in their kayaks. I was on Little River Canyon with a first time paddler that swam at Humpty Dumpty, then swam. His wife had to come pick him up and bring him home to find his spare. He had a very long day before he got home.
That sounds familiar enough that I may have been there.
I dont care about a damn app I need performance
I just want reliability!
That shuttle has always held me back. Did you see a small dam toward the end? Heard there was one for supplying water to the town below the powerhouse during its construction.
It's a weir just before the 3rd (unscoutable) gorge. You can hike up to the weir depending on undergrowth. Paddle across the lake and hike up the creekbed. THere is a logging road on your left, (river right) that leads to a gap in the mountain few dozen feet above the creekbed. There's an aqueduct over the creek that comes from the weir. When you hike through the gap, you'll only be a few feet above the creek level on the other side.
That was a fun run milt! So glad to have this footage! Thanks for reaching out to me
That was a fun run. But the next trip was much more eventful!
Thanks mate.
You're welcome!

You guys are awesome! Good times. I loved the feeling of paddling up white water....
Sweet Viper!
Viper forever!!!
Tuff day on the water for some. And a hard climb out with a bad shoulder.
Endo with an OC1?! I only did those with my C1. Driving an OC1 full of water was never my idea of a good time. Hats off to you, open boater.
I liked your line at the dog. Where is Frazier these days?
such awesome footage. thank you
Thanks, the Russell Fork was on my wish list in 88 but it was only available with releases and I never got there.
What model canoe is that. Ive really only seen SOAR and Sea Eagle. Looks sweet
Grabner
@whitewater-video never heard of them till today (or if I have I never noticed that make canoes or Canadiens as the call them). Great lineup. I wonder if between the tubes they are wider than my SOAR S10. It's just too narrow for my taste. Otherwise, great boat. The Grabner in the video looks great
It wore out eventually. But it was very stable and forgiving even on bigger falls. Watch here: ua-cam.com/video/Cj2aLAUwyRs/v-deo.html I was really surprised to see they make inflatable sailing catamarans.
Apropos preferred conditions @1.57. I prefer rivers that bring me back to where I started.
Diversity Hire's 😂 😅
Uh, the firefighters carrying the propane tanks are white...
It was really dumb to be that close and filming. Red hot shrapnel from exploding propane tanks can go hundreds of yards. The firefighters carrying the tanks still venting without full SCBA being used were stupid.
I see you complaining on every fire related video on this platform. Hopefully finding a new hobby in 2025 is your resolution.

Nice run
Milt, Nice line at 7 Foot. Well done!
Thanks good video. Suspect you can get the parts you need online.
Just when you think you grasp how big it is you watch that dude in an open canoe disappear in an even bigger wave. Unreal.
There's an old saying, I would rather be lucky than good.
I used to paddle with a guy who said that often. I miss that!
Ah, canoes. I miss my Mad River ME. Drove like a tank when full of water, difficult to roll without prying yourself out of the boat, but stable and dry (for the most part).
We use to tube this section =-)
Yup
That ejection at 8:10 looked painful. Good, but not as good as Don's ejection at the Falls of LRC. Does an ejection count as a swim???
Yes. Always.
Good recovery Milt.
Holy hell that looks like it hurts!
It did!
