Peace Action 2021 - Strangest dream, Peace will Come

Peace Action of Milwaukee requested a 3-minute video with a song that I have done at many Peace rallies and observances over the years. "Last Night I had the Strangest Dream" by Ede McCurdy is a favorite of Julie Enslow, Milwaukee's peace pioneer. To get to 3 minutes I segued into Tom Paxton's "Peace will Come". The plan is for this soundtrack to back up a video by Peace Action's Sue Ruggles.

A Sailor's Songbag
Переглядів 1573 роки тому
"A Sailor's Songbag" is a program of sailor songs and some shanties from the Great Lakes, the Seven Seas, and the Milwaukee area that was done as a Zoom concert for St. John's on the Lake retirement home, so these songs tend to be the more gentle ones that elders living on Milwaukee Bay might appreciate (and that I wrote). For more maritime songs, go back to Playlists and check out more "Mariti...
Sing a Song of Springtime
Переглядів 3463 роки тому
This program was recorded live from a Zoom performance for St. John's on the Lake in Milwaukee WI on April 13, 2021 celebrating springtime. In retrospect, it occurred to me that this program was also a showcase of songs by my "mentors" - the folksingers that have had the greatest impact on how and what I sing and my "go to" songwriters when I'm putting a general family program together. (There ...

Dangerous Folk in Concert- Original Trio
These days, we only sing the CHORUS to "God Bless America." Back in the day before WWII was invented (and WWI was referred to a "The Great War" ~~ The War to End All Wars), Kate Smith sang the entire anthem with its Isolationist intro live on the radio. When Woody Guthrie, who felt that Isolationism wasn't going to stop Hitler and Mussolini, heard it, he switched off his radio, picked up his guitar, and composed "This Land Is Your Land" as a protest against it.
Originally titled "God Blessed America"
DID YOU KNOW...? The original title of "On,Wisconsin" was "Minnesota."
Yes
The Governor of Louisiana most decidedly did NOT write "You Are My Sunshine"! While its authorship is disputed by "musicolologists," the Guv appropriated the Arkansas tune and claimed credit for composing "Louisiana, My Louisiana" to it. Used it for his campaign song, don'chaknow.
Google: Who originally wrote and sang "You Are My Sunshine"? Written and recorded as early as 1939, the song was first published and copyrighted in 1940 by Jimmie Davis and Charles Mitchell. Davis went on to be governor of Louisiana from 1944 to 1948 and again from 1960 to 1964, and used the song for his election campaign.
Re: Banana Boat Song: I was singing along; couldn't hear your audience doing the same. My suggestion: Mic your audience & invite them to sing along! Who wants to sit still and listen to a solo on a hand-clapping, toe-tapping' calypso ~~ or any other ~~ tune! I claim this quote as mine, as I haven't been able to locate it on the InterWeb, even under Louis Armstrong or Ella Fitzgerald: "All music is folk music: I ain't heard no nanny goats singin' it!"
Hi, Dave! How about listing Tellers in order of speaking? I don't know how Paul Anker (Anchor? Anka?) spells his last name....😅
Paul Akert ( www.paulakert.com/ ) Their names are below the pictures on the opening card- pretty easy to figure out who is who.

I'm from North Georgia and we had an older whizzend man we called Whittling Jim from Rainey Mountain Scout Camp. He mainly sat on the scout building front porch with a group of scouts around watching and listening to the finer points of carving wood with a pocket knife. In fact it was he that made me search you tube when I came across this song. Whittling Jim from (Georgia) still lives in the memories of many a young boy trying to grow up in the south! Bless simpler times
