Day 4: Minimalism and Simplicity (Henry Turner Style) Today, I’m inspired by @HenryTurnerphoto and his minimalist approach to composition. I’ll be looking for simple, balanced shots that tell a story through clean lines, symmetry, and careful use of negative space. Let’s see how I can embrace the “less is more” philosophy in my photography. 0:00 Intro 2:08 Subject One 6:46 Subject Two 9:50 Subj...

Day 1: Capturing Light in the Landscape (Thomas Heaton Style) In today’s challenge, I head out at golden hour (morning) to capture the magic of natural light transforming a landscape/seascape. Inspired by @ThomasHeatonPhoto and focusing on atmosphere and mood, I’ll be chasing soft shadows, warm tones, and serene compositions. Let’s see if I can channel his knack for storytelling through light a...
Photography As Social Commentary - nice idea but I miss the mark

Social commentary photography illustrates feelings, situations, cruelty, difficulty, happiness or sadness of people in the whole world. It's about telling stories, provoking thought, and inspiring action. Photography as social commentary isn't a new concept. The power of visual imagery to sway public opinion and shed light on societal issues has been utilised since the advent of the camera. Tod...

Pesky orange barriers , stunning shots of the water and bridges and the tree with its roots loved this one good for the mind well done for not slipping . 👌
Thanks Tudor for sharing your experience with great results for this challenge.... great compositions in that area ... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Thank you 🙏
Thought you did very well to get those long exposure water pictures especially without a polariser or ND filter. Think you should take K&F up on their offer. I have a couple of their filters. Good quality at a reasonable price. Though I suspect yours will be gratis. Good work Tudor has been an interesting week so far.
That’s what I thought too. I replied to their email and now I’m just waiting to hear back. It’ll be interesting to see what they’re proposing. Two more vids on the challenge to go 👍
great video!! lovely to hear your thoughts as you decide what to shoot!
Thanks. Yep you what though, I reckon a lot of patience is actually required for this kind of photography 👍
I remember going there last year, the cafe is very good I stopped for Lunch in between taking Photographs loving the Challenge keep going only two days to go, Colin.
It’s not a bad little cafe actually. I often pop in there when I’m just wandering around the place 👍 Two more vids to go yay!
Very nice, shame those orange barriers are there, time for a new ball head as well as that one looks a bit loose
I agree on both counts. Don’t those authorities know that the scene is a Kodak moment? 🤣 I’ve had that tripod for about 4 years now. Time for an upgrade. I understand K&F Concept do a Carbon-Fibre option 😉
Nice photos Tudor, I love Dungeness but not been for a few years. Shame about the boat I have some photos of it but why set it on fire, I can't understand the mentality of some people.
Yeah it’s a mystery to me. Perhaps people think they are leaving their mark - like that sycamore tree on Hadrians wall!
I felt that cold , the old hut with the lighthouse behind it a brilliant picture , and my favourites are the walkway scene and the bench at the end it gave me Empathy.
Oh wow! I love that the images evoked emotion. Thanks for sharing that. 🙏
Well done throughout. Obviously, the board walk, who wouldn't like that one. The bench is perfect for B&W, the one offset left, I prefer. And the beach tower. It stands well alone, but with the minimal people, it "comes to life" as an overlord creature. Talking and shooting are fundamental to You Tube photography, but no one balances it as well as you do. Bravo! As they say in theatre.
Thanks very much 🙏
Excellent video, Tude! Loved the background music too, just perfect.
Thank you lovely x
Better weather than when I was there, just a tiny thunderstorm and sidewise rain. You got some good pictures from that location.
I’ll bet those adverse weather conditions would have provided some excellent images 👍
@@TudorSmithPhotography It may not be the safest of things to go out in that location in a thunderstorm.
Great pics for this challenge Tudor.... another interesting video in the cold... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Love it there, one of my favourite places with so much when you look
It sounds like you’re encouraging me to visit without vlogging - just to wander around with the camera. You’re right though, plenty to see near and far 👍
The walkway scene is STUNNING. Thank you for braving the cold to show us some great shots.
Thank you. It’s a very interesting place for photography.
You have inspired me to go to the woods Tudor , love the photos you shot of nature
You could do it at Richmond Park too I reckon 👍
@@TudorSmithPhotographyyes might do as thinking about going to Richmond this week 📸😊
It’s a huge subject area - perhaps it needs breaking down to, say, social reform / economic decline etc as projects
Absolutely. I tried to cover too much in this video. But now that I’m aware of it as a concept I can perhaps do another video when the opportunity arises 👍
I like the "hangers-oners," but the mud puddle didn't do it for me (it didn't seem that it did it for you either. :-)
I guess it goes to show that not every session is perfect. One or two good shots but on the whole I found that challenge uninspiring. Better videos to come I promise 👍
Wow Tudor. An interesting idea asking AI to give us challenges! Kudos on starting another challenge like this! The Day 3 popped on my feed but thought Id start with this one and work my way through 😁 You did great on this one. A fabulous sky indeed, colorful sunrise. It just exploded! Loved the peaceful wide shot at 9:18 and the sunrise ones. You shouldve asked the seagull to fly by in all of them 😂 the one with the ship too. Very neat. look forward to this series.
I’m a glutten for punishment. You’d thing I learned my lesson last time.
You caught some fine details of those Leafs relaxing nature walk .
One or two good shots eh? An exercise likethis does show that not every picture is a winner.
Very good, Tudor. Maybe you should concentrate on five or six pictures; then, you would not feel so rushed.
Good idea. I always try and cram in too much.
Yes what a challenge...I like the results and your subjects quite interesting....yes I would also be out of my comfort zone but you did well... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
I must admit that I didn’t enjoy that challenge at all. It didn’t help that I was concentrating too much on that stupid DJI which kept playing up and loosing focus. Still it’s done now and I don’t need to repeat it lol. Better vids to come 👍
The last three photos are superb and fulfil your brief. I look forward to the next 6 days.
That's encouraging to hear, thank you. The effects of the light on the landscape right?
Good Morning What you are doing is something different so It's bound to be more taxing on your enthusiasm and vlogging can be gutty at times, on one of the days do a silent shoot and just upload Images with your own thoughts by way of captions, best wishes, Colin.
Oh I like that idea - a silent shoot but just with all the ambient sounds around me. I may well give this a go. Thanks for the suggestion 🙏
@@TudorSmithPhotography I am sure you will do it well C.
As you may remember, I'm a fan of black-and-white photography, so any B/W is fine. I haven't done any for a while now, but it's on the list for February and May. Street photography is like urban photography, as in most towns, there are a lot of empty shops that are decaying. Nice set of pictures and a good mix of subjects.
this looks like a great challenge..
It had its moments moments 🤣
I’m a fan of black and white Photography you get a different Perspective. Capturing people and trees is my favourite and sun and moon shots .Don’t get me started on graffiti a blot on the Landscape.
I work in tech so photography tends to be my escape from that world. The notion of taking instruction on it from a talking box wouldn’t fly with me at all
It’s all subjective I guess. I know I’d have ended up doing 7 days of similar subjects so that’s why I turned to the talking box.
Great challenge, looking forward to the entire week.
Things can only get better 😉
Interesting location Tudor....nice to just stroll around taking pics of whatever interests you for the challenge... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
I’m going to have to try it without vlogging. I bet I’d be more focused on the photography then 👍
Another great challenge Tudor. To my mind I think Street Photography works best in black and white. Not sure why, a gritty reportage, timeless look I suppose. Looking forward to the rest of your challenge week.
Yep I agree. Black and white seems to isolate the subject from and distractions (like colours)
love your videos just quick question what camera were you using for day2? thanks
Thanks. I was using the Sony Cybershot DSC-HX50 which I bought second hand off eBay. I think it’s about 12 years old now and no longer manufactured. m.dpreview.com/products/sony/compacts/sony_dschx50v
Very watchable day 2 challenge Tudor ,Street photography is like the theatre of life, because it captures people and events that might never happen again, you captured some great people shots in this video, 📸👍
You’re so right Vicky. It’s capturing a moment in time that can never be repeated! 👍📷
Nice vid! Good to visit old haunts! 😂
I know about urbex I follow a few vloggers! You got me onto chat gdp
Rachel, it’s a great tool to use if you need a little inspiration 😉
@@TudorSmithPhotography I think I must used it for everything 🤣!
*Came for Pride & Prejudice, Stayed for Tudor* Stumbled upon your Tudor Smith channel and have since subscribed to all. Absolutely adore how you get out and about and take your audience along with you as you would a companion. I have learned so much about your part of England in the handful of videos I've watched. Excited to see a new photography vid everyday with your most recent challenge. Keep up the fabulous work!!!
That's kind of you. Thanks for subscribing. Hopefully your home feed isn't too saturated with "Tudor Smith Content" though 😉
@@TudorSmithPhotography I watched one of your older videos of Edward Hopper Painting Photography Style. I've always thought his Nighthawks painting is so mesmerizing and like you said such a moody vibe. Enjoyed the parallel and the use of the camera as your paintbrush. Keep sharing your art!
I feel I want to do a follow up on that video but maybe with a busier place but still with some solitary people - to try and capture that video of isolation.
@@TudorSmithPhotography Do It!! It looks like you have no end of charming eateries & bars as a backdrop for your subject matter.
Hi using the mobile for framing is a good idea. I'm going to have to try that. Thanks.
Glad it was helpful!
Love the sun photos ,a great challenge look forward to day 2 .
Thanks Tyrone. Hopefully the other days will be interesting for you 👍
Interesting challenge with great results... looking forward to your next video... cheers from Australia 🦘🦘😊
Cheers 🙏
We've all had the tripod blown over. Mine had the DJI Pocket 2 on it. It knocked part of the case off, which flew into some undergrowth. It took me half an hour to find it. The air deed turned blue just a little. That looks like a nice challenge and a nice set of pictures.
Martin, I could have kicked myself. I knew it was windy so I even put the DJI on a more sturdier tripod than it usually sits on…and still it blew up over. Now the gimble is sticky and has trouble calibrating. It’s gonna be a pain making videos now until I can replace it.
Hi Tudor. I think you'd also love the photography of James Popsys. Just a thought, thanks for the videos, fast becoming one of my favourite chanels 👍👍
I’m a big fan of James Popsys actually. He’s just so down to earth. Someone I wouldn’t mind having a pint with. I can’t think why I didn’t use his name for the inspiration in the ChatGPT challenge.
Looking forward to the next one
Thanks Trevor 🙏
I have got to hand it to you innovation is your forte Tudor, I have copied this challenge for reference I cannot get out every day but I'll do it over a slightly longer period and It's quite unique the format of the challenge, I thought you took some nice Images of St.Margarets Bay and the sunrise, looking forward to the week ahead, best wishes, Colin.
I must admit it’s been all consuming this past week not only going out to do the shoots but all the editing and video production. I think your idea of doing it over a longer period of time is perhaps more appropriate 😉
@@TudorSmithPhotography If anyone can do it you can with your organised mind with your computer experience, I can imagine it's very time consuming bearing in mind your working full time as well, Colin.
Great photos, looking forward to day 2.
Thank you. All the videos/shoots are different so hopefully something for everyone 👍
Great video Tudor i love Social Commentary Photography its showing everyday life as it is happening right now and everything around us is changing so fast its good to document for future generations to see
That was my thought although I’m pretty sure I didn’t capture the social element. I may give this one another try - say when there’s a demonstration or something 😉
@@TudorSmithPhotography Good idea as i am sure there will be many this year🙂
I kind of like the concept, I like taking pictures of grafitti and buildings in decay so this resonates with me. Nice video!
Thank you! Cheers!
I really enjoyed watching this video. Great shots, very inspiring. Greetings from Bavaria!
Thank you very much! Greetings back to you from Kent 👍
We drove from Eastbourne to Rolvenden for a volunteers meeting of the Kent and East Sussex railway and the number of diverted traffic signs we saw in different places with no indication of where the diversion starts or ends
Did you start in the middle of the diversion? That’s frustrating when that happens.
@TudorSmithPhotography no we did not get diverted at all there were just random signs in different places it's possible that they were night time diversions.
Ah those ones. Confusing at the best of times. I must admit I challenge diversions and “road closed” sometimes for the reason I assume that the signs have been forgotten and not removed 🤣
I like what you did there ,I enjoy going out and Capturing life ,Buildings what have been and gone Or shadows of people on the street who have been and gone .
Things that are in the past are often still with us right?
Another pompous name for just snapshots images
I think you’re right. I won’t be experimenting with “social commentary” any day soon now I’ve done this vlog. Plain old street photography seems to cover all basis really.
What I love about this Channel is not just the relaxed enjoyable content but the fact you prove you can get amazing shots using an older entry level camera, it's just so refreshing watching a channel that's not obsessed with the latest gear, too many photography channels are all using the very latest mirrorless £2000+ cameras which most people can't even afford and their video edits are all flashy and fast paced it drives me mad. You focus on the enjoyment of photography with a relaxed attitude & it does you credit 👍
Thank you 🙏 I always said to myself that I wouldn’t splash out on expensive gear until I could prove to myself that I had a certain competency with my photography. As it happens I’m still very much happy with the D3200 as it takes good pictures and works with my style. Sure I could upgrade so that I might have more flexibility with the camera functions but for now - it still works. It’s definitely about having fun as a hobbyist photographer though 👍
Hi Tudor. Good to see you having fun in my neck of the woods. I liked your photos of people at 20:33 with parliament in the background. The wedding Routemaster from 29:20. Your Martin Parr moment at 17:20 by the London Eye was great, photo of the day in your own words was accurate. Also, the toilets in the NPG Trafalgar Sq and Waterstones, Piccadilly, are less congested and handy to know about for people coming to those areas. Enjoy the rest of your day.
Street photography is often hit and miss but every now and then we can capture something that really pleases our eye. I must admit I kind of rushed this one mainly because I was focusing more on the vlogging than the photography. One day I'll go out with the camera only, and enjoy the photography properly. Thanks for your input - much appreciated 👍
