Red Wood Ant nest (23/4/2024)

This Red Wood Ant nest (Formica rufa) was very active in the spring sunshine today. There were an incredible number of ants.

It's late evening and the incubating hen owl gives out a load 'hoot' possibly in response to the male owl calling from a perch somewhere nearby. Between 20.26hrs and 21.06hrs the hen owl hoots no less than 17 times. She left the box for a short break at 21.15hrs.

The hen owl is incubating quietly and a stock dove (presumably a male) can be heard alighting on the box and he calls incessantly. The owl doesn't really respond except to move her head slightly. I'm assuming that this was the dove whose partner was attacked by the owl in the box and which may have sustained mortal injuries and subsequently perished. I can't be certain of that of course. It's daybreak and just getting light. The hen owl is incubating her 2 eggs. The male bird is nearby and utters a couple of 'hoots' and the female responds with her 'bubbling' call.

The hen Tawny Owl is incubating her 2 eggs and the male owl can be heard hooting outside and the female responds shortly later the male enters the box briefly. No mating takes place so I guess that this was just a social visit! More likely a case of pair bonding in action. It is rare to see the male enter the owl box like this.

In this footage the female owl is incubating her (as yet) one egg and clearly senses that the male bird is nearby. The hen owl utters a loud 'hoot' and then one of the birds utters the familiar softer 'kewick' call and then the male entered the box. The stock doves have been regularly visiting the owl box during the day and courting and they have even added some nesting material. The hen owl enters the box and shuffles around in the sawdust. This is her usual pattern of behaviour. Yet again she finds that nesting material in the form of strips of bark and sticks has been added by the stock doves which I have to remove manually. This is the regular daily pattern at the moment. So the drama continues in my owl box. Some days the tawny owl roosts in it by day and when not the stock doves appear and start crooning and courting and now today a grey squirrel pays a visit and starts to build a nest! Which animal will win the day that is the question?
