As time permits, new lessons to improve your drawing and painting skills. I work in a large variety of media, so please subscribe to the channel and keep checking in to see what’s new. I know that I don’t have all the answers, but as it’s said: “You don’t need to have all of the answers because no one is smart enough to ask all of the questions”. And on that note, learn whatever you can from me, and combine it with lessons from other sources and you will be a better artist. For my inspiration, I took from Albrecht Durer, Rembrandt, Claude Monet, Andrew Wyeth and Vincent van Gogh. HAPPY PAINTING!

More Manual Dexterity Training that will improve your drawings and paintings
So what is your favorite medium?
If I’m drawing, it’s currently watercolor pencils, because they’re softer than regular colored pencils and therefore take less effort to get color down on the paper. When painting outdoors, it’s always oil paint. Painting in the studio either oil paint or watercolor.
Happy to show my support and subscribe
Brilliant, Thank you!
I like it alot , a real lot !!
Great, thanks. It was a lot of fun to build.
The circus and carnival are always my favorites, have a fun day !
Great! I’ll be uploading a video of the circus in motion in a few days…
SEEKING PEACE
This is beautiful, thank you for sharing ❤️
Thanks for commenting, I hope you feel that you learned something from the video.
Thanks for commenting, I hope you feel that you learned something.
I didn’t expect a video about frames to be so inspiring. Also I really love your paintings and your videos are fun to watch. Thank you 😊
Thank you for the very nice comment. I try to inspire others, good to hear that I’ve reached someone with the video.
You don't recommend different grades of pencils and only work with one single pencil shows how much you know
Thanks for your input. But some would say it’s how little I know… I only use a pencil for sketching or drawing the outlines of a watercolor. If you only draw for the sake of drawing, a set of pencils of different hardness values may suit you better.
Graphite looks silver when it reflects the light. Your drawing is supposed to look like shiny silver art. You haven't layed down enough material. You're too light with your pressure on the lead when it's touching the paper. You have to reach the minimum standard for applying the lead to the paper. The pencil manufacturers give you a sample shading for each pencil. Once you can reach the minimum requirements that becomes the zero point and a blank sheet of paper it at level -100%. Graphite drawings reflect light all over and they appear to be like shining silver. You hold your pencil down at the end cause you need lots of pressure so you can put down enough lead to meet the minimum requirements set out by the manufacturer. What you think is the Graphite is actually the binder material and the Graphite can only be seen in the light reflections. You must put down a thick layer so your whole drawing can reflect the silver image.
Thanks for your input. I only use pencils for sketching or laying out a drawing for a painting. So yes, if you are seriously into just drawing, the sets of different pencils are better suited. My video is solely to show the many different drawing materials available.
I'm your doomsday spoiler. You're going to really hate me. You're doing it all wrong. There's a minimum layer of material that you're required to put down on the surface in order to meet the minimum requirements set down by the manufacturers. Your layers don't get close to meeting the minimum requirement. You've got to put down lots of material to reach the manufacturers examples for those pencils. You can test to see if you've put down enough material to meet the minimum requirements by tilting your paper towards the light and the graphite will bounce the light off the surface. To see the graphite you must put down a thick layer of pencil lead and hope the manufacturer has done their job of calculating and mixing correctly. You must put down enough material with enough firm pressure to meet the manufacturers shading specifications. Your pencil marks and layering is too thin and delicate. You don't meet the minimum requirements for those pencil shades. You've put down some binding agent but not enough graphite. Graphite drawings reflect sunlight. They are beautiful things to look at. The more graphite the more brilliant the sunlight reflections.
You are correct in what you have stated, but those kinds of details are for artists that produce drawings to be seen an drawings and not in preparation for a painting in which they would be covered by paint. I do appreciate the beauty of finished graphite, chalk or silverpoint drawings, but it’s not my goal, i just draw to prepare for paintings.
What a nice guy
What, did I do something good?
love the textures of the wall !
Thank you, did you see how it is done in the video?
Sorry. Couldnt get the sound up high enough to hear you. Had to give up
I’m sorry to hear it, I’m a a quiet speaker. I’ll get a good microphone for future videos.
1:56 what pencil u use 2B?
Yes, 2B is all that I use. Press lightly for light values, press firmly for dark values. It’s so simple, I don’t understand why anyone would need a set of pencils with different values, it’s confusing to me.
This is such a lovely, relaxing video Wiley! ❤
Thank you. I do try to represent that painting should be relaxing, and not something to be approached with apprehension.
Well you changed bits of it and it turned out beautiful. It gives me an idea to change what I don’t like in mine
That’s great, just keep on pushing past the difficult part and try something new.
Beautiful piece of work! 😮
Thanks, I had fun doing it, especially as it became an improved painting.
This should be the title of almost every art video now on UA-cam. Wonderfully honest!
Yes, sometimes artists forget how long it took them to learn to improve their work. I want folks to know that sometimes paintings just turn out poorly, and that you can learn to make changes to improve the paintings. And sometimes it means going in an entirely new direction, as seen in this series of 3 videos. Thank you for taking the time to comment.
When I feel that a painting is boring, I ask myself some important questions: 1) Do I have an interesting composition or is it too symmetrical, 2) do I have a focal point (point of interest), 3) do I have a good range of values (lights and darks), 4) does the painting have a clear light source which helps describe the forms and creates drama, 5) if it’s a landscape, does it have a sense of depth? All of these things are useful for critiquing my work and making the improvements needed.
Thank you for taking the time to add your well organized plan to improve a painting. Your input is appreciated.
I think this painting is so beautiful. I love the colors.
Thank you! It was a fun demonstration. I appreciate the feedback.
I use tools to help me draw
Do you mean tools like the squares and triangles such as the ones used for mechanical drawing?
@@wileyvangogh Tools like a ruler and a protractor, plus varies others
Just stumbled upon your channel. I'm a newbie, so this is going to be fun. Many thanks for your time.
Great! If there is something specific that you need help with, let me know in the comments. I’ve dabbled with most art materials at some point. And can make instructional videos as time allows.
Watercolour pencils?
What about them, are you asking for an instructional video on watercolor pencils?
@@wileyvangogh Yes please.
Great vid
Thanks so much, now get out there and get some drawing done!
Hairspray is a very good fixative for charcoal and pastels. I used to use it when I was at university, the cheapest seemed to work the best. I always used the strong hold variety, a lot more cost effective.
Yes, it is, and hairspray is cheaper than fixative, and works just as well, my only concern is any long term damage that may occur to the paper from the chemicals. BUT that is likely a concern even with the commercially available fixatives. Which is one of the reasons that some artists do not use any kind of fixative. Of course this means that pastel dust will drop from the paper, especially when drawings are framed. And if you frame with acrylic, static will pull pastel dust from the paper to the acrylic.
Love, love this video!
Thank you, the video was recorded at the senior center during the “using acrylics as watercolors” demo
Wilwey you are a treasure....
Thank you, but the value of most artists is only realized after we’re gone. I am pleased to hear that other creatives such as yourself appreciate what I do while I’m still around.
Staedtler erasers suck. Faber CAstell 187120 and Tombow Dust Catch, or Mono plastic, ,even Pentel Light, all are far superior. KUM Sharpeners, aliminate the need and the mess sandpaper creates. No other paperstump, comes close to Conte Paris ones. The blend way smoother, without leaving a muddy look on the blended graphite. (Tip All these stumps, must be prepared with sandpaper, before use, it's not just for cleaning them). No other kneadable eraser, comes close to the performance and versatility, of LYRA kneadable eraser. No other graphite, is as good for drawing, as is Faber Castell pencils. (For writing UNI Star,or Hi Uni, are the best). -... Here is a list, that can upgrade your tools, and thus the results you get, while drawing or sketching: Best mechanical pencil: Pentel (Graphgear 500 0.5mm) Best wooden Graphite pencils: Faber Castell (9000/Pitt matt/Aquarelle) Best Charcoal pencils: General's (Best white charcoal too!) Best Lead Holder for drawing: FAber Castell TK9400/TK4600 Best lead holder for sketching: Koh-I-Noor 5340 Best kneadable eraser: LYRA Best plastic eraser: Faber Castell Dust Free 187120/Tombow Mono Plastic/Tombow Dust Catch Best Fine detail eraser: Tombow mono Zero 2.3mm Best Colour pencils: Faber Castell Polychromos/Caran D'ash Luminance Best Sharpeners: KUM Masterpiece/KUM Automatic longpoint/M+R Round Brass Best Paper for drawing: Hahnemihle Dessin 150gsm/Arches Watercolor Hot Pressed Best Sketchbook for dry media: Canson 180 Artbook/Canson Universal/Hahnemuhle 120gr Best paper for Polychromos: Fabriano Artistico Hot Pressed Best Sanguine/Sepia pencils/leads: Koh-I-Noor Red chalk/Conte Sanguine
Thank you for taking the time to add your personal experiences. All experiences and preferences are different. I do find, as you indicate that your drawings will improve with better quality materials. You must have been drawing for a very long time to acquire your knowledge of materials. Keep working, and thank you once again for the input.

Thanks, working from your imagination can give both frustrating and rewarding results, You just have to keep doing it and it gets easier.
Thank you for all the time and focus you put into making this video.
You are very welcome. This is my most popular video, I wish I could figure out why…
Very impressive display, Amazing! Thanks for sharing.😊
Thank you, one more work session this Spring, 2024, and it will be “finished”…
Nice 😊
Thanks.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR VIDEO. LEARNING ALWAYS !
Learning always? Me too!
It doesn’t matter what you draw; you’re in it, making every detail count.
Yes, better results come from being really engaged with the subject.
I had problems using dark lines to draw. And I want to ,earn how to share with out drawing dark lines I came here from Maine to Quebec and to with sec wife and I needed something to do in my spare time always drawing dark lines I want to change this that.i started drawing In my early 40s this will help.
Yes, most artists start out by outlining everything, a habit that must be broken to improve your drawings.
This is honestly amazing! I am a beginner artist myself, thanks for this thorough explanation! My favorite drawing mediums thus far are def the conte crayons, charcoal, pencil, mechanical pencil and watercolor pencils. I’m curious to try the silver point pencil since you mentioned DaVinci would use it!
Thank you, I tried to be thorough. I am also partial to the watercolor pencils as they have a softer lead than some of the regular colored pencils. Is there anything specific that you would like to see an art lesson video on?
It's actually pencil ✏️ drawing that's well below the minimum requirements from pencil manufacturers. These pencil marks are not thick enough to reach the minimum requirements set out by the manufacturers. Graphite drawings reflect sunlight. They look like shining silver light reflections. Most people don't put down a thick enough layer of lead onto the paper. To meet the minimum requirements a layer of pencil must be very thick.
Spectacular!❤
Thank you!
Cool guide !
Thank you, i enjoyed making it.
Your paintings are beautiful! I can only imagine the amount of time, effort, and talent it takes to make such wonderful paintings! Keep going!! 🌼🌼🌼
Thank you for the kind words. Painting is all consuming for me and has been my life’s focus.
Folks, please take a few moments to comment, like and subscribe any to my videos. I prefer not to ask for this in every video as some folks do. Your input educates me on what lessons that I may need to create. Thank you all for your support and input!

Yes, it does pay to be extra careful when using power equipment, and if I’m tired, or had a beer or two, will not go near it. You can do it, just pay attention to every step along the way.
