    Thanks for posting this video! I'm planning to start this schedule in 2025. It's good to see what you learnt from the process and what you noticed was missing. To answer your question - though it was a long time ago now - I can say you've definitely improved as an artist. I'm only just beginning, so I can't say whether that would be enough to work as an in-house professional, but it's definitely high enough quality to work for commissions. Honestly, if I could draw something with the same quality as your 'final project' illustration by 2026 I'd be very pleased - though I understand that came with a background in illustration I don't have, so I'm lowering my expectations slightly. Do you have any suggestions on supplementary materials (other UA-cam channels or videos of Mark's) I should check out throughout the year? Since I only started drawing at the start of December this year, I plan on also working through the 'drawabox' course to build confidence with my linework and develop spatial reasoning. Have you tried this course, or do you have any opinions on it? Do you think that's a good idea, or will I be putting too much on my plate?

      @AverageCondor Hey, thank you for answering my questions! Now I can answer yours. If you want to learn drawing as a hobby, I would recommend taking a slow and steady approach. I’m not familiar with the content or complexity of Drawbox, but sticking to one schedule is important. You can modify it to suit your preferences if you feel it’s too easy. I would suggest starting with one program first and then adding something extra based on how it goes. As for useful drawing resources, there are plenty-maybe even too many. I recommend avoiding overwhelming yourself with too much information. Don’t watch more than necessary unless you encounter a specific problem while drawing. In that case, look up how professional artists handle it. Hope this helps! If you have any further questions, I’ll do my best to answer them.

      @@CutterflyArts That's a good point - I've had more free time over the holiday period, but as I get back to work I'm going to have to be mindful of not burning myself out grinding too much - if this is a hobby, I need to make sure I'm having fun. I still plan to at least try progressing through Drawabox and Marc Brunet's yearly schedule simultaneously, but if that becomes too much I won't hesitate to drop one and revisit it later if needed. I get what you mean about there being too many resources out there - it's easy to get caught up watching/reading through various guides, and not taking the time to actually create. Theory and fundamentals are valuable, but they won't do anything if you never practice. Thanks again, this has helped me work out my thoughts - I appreciate you still taking the time to respond to comments on this video to this day!

    Hey man great improvement! I just wanted to point out some things that jump out at me that you can focus on next to level up <3 I think one of the biggest things that detract from the otherwise amazing work is the lighting, specifically on the skin. Maybe doing some skin lighting studies to get closer to that semi realistic skin style would help. The background really came out fantastic, same with the tail! Kind of reminds me of World of Warcraft painting styles which as anyone who plays wow knows have a goated art team. Another thing I'm noticing is that there is a big contrast between styles of the character in terms of paint style. The tail is really high quality, the background and foreground is really nicely painted with a more animated style and the character is painted similarly to older RIOT splash arts. I think the differences in these are subtracting from the whole, the tail pulls your attention away with its detail, the background has a clear painting style, and that makes the character look a little out of place by contrast. I think the tail draws too much attention not only because it's very detailed, but because it also lacks depth. The blur is being used to simulate depth for the background, getting more blurred the further back you go, but the tail seemingly isnt to the same degree. The right side being completely in focus. I think some cohesion would do wonders to really sell the whole piece.

    • @CutterflyArts
      @CutterflyArts 2 місяці тому

      @@rasmachris94 You are right about that, although I don't know how to apply this feedback to my future artworks yet. I do have a problem with sloppy blurring - or not entirely though trough. But the difference in styles is completely accidentall as I tried to paint both things in my own way (riots splash arts were used more of a reference to the fundamentals of good illustration I did not intended to copy thier stylization completely) I will have to think more about the implementation of your advice. Thank you for helping me out!

    The art turned out great! The rendering of her tail and lower body was pretty awesome! For me, the potential of this piece could be increased with a different approach to light and composition. Before you start coloring, it'd be wise to work on the values and block the light first. Set the direction and the source of the light, then stick with that until the end. I noticed that, even though you placed a highlight on her chest (indicating that the source of light is above and in front of her), you made a contour highlight on her entire hair, which doesn’t make sense, since there’s only one main light source, and it’s in front of her. Maybe you wanted to show her silhouette by doing that, but in that case, just add small lines of highlights in strategic places in her hair-"less is more." You could also add tiny highlights on her gold accessories and emeralds, following the light's direction once again. Right now, it feels like there’s no light hitting her arms or the crown, even though you rendered those pieces. As for the composition, I think that since it’s a splash art, the character must be the principal focal point, so your composition needs to be very clear. You can try the rule of thirds or place the character in the center. In this case, the character is neither in the center nor following the rule of thirds, so it feels off-balance and a bit awkward to look at. Also, there’s so much detail happening around her face-let her breathe! Maybe adding more space for the sky, emphasizing her face, would be much better. Try to create contrast between detailed and simple areas, like: detailed, simple, detailed, simple. Her face is full of details with her crown, so opening the sky (making it a simple element after a detailed one) will give more negative space and draw more focus to her face. Depth is also very important. In your splash, I can’t feel the depth, which makes it seem too flat. To fix that, make sure the values are right, and keep it simple: "Foreground, Midground, Background," with the first one being the darkest in value. That way, it will be crystal clear what’s closer to us and what’s farther away. Now, this is just my opinion, but that hand on the left would have a bigger purpose if it were on the right. It’s the "right hand," and Cassiopeia is looking at us, almost as if "we are next." You could work with that context and make the petrified hand "our" hand, as if she’s turning the viewer to stone. Another thing to note is that the perspective is low-angle, but her anatomy isn’t following that. That’s just a fundamental issue, but as long as you remember to align the anatomy with the perspective, you'll be fine. None of this means that the art is bad-far from it. There’s no bad art in the world (except AI art, but that doesn’t count as art... right? xd). There’s only art that can increase its potential by refining it more and more. What’s important is communicating the idea, and your art does that very well. So for me, your piece is pretty good! Keep going, and you’ll become even more awesome! Good luck with your studies!🥳🥳🥳

    Tl;dr, have fun. If you aren't having fun doing it, do something else. They say you can only eat an elephant one bite at a time, and this is true for art as well. There's a mountain of information that needs to be introduced, understood, and mastered, and then turned into intuition if you want to become a master at art, but a beginner is not a master. A beginner is a beginner. They are a toddler trying to race as fast as usaine bolt because of the sheer idea (or sense of obligation) that it MUST be done before you can even call yourself an artist. In my opinion, art is a series of questions that the art piece asks you, and then you, the artist, have to answer them. How long do I draw this line, how does this curve match my reference, how do I draw a circle, how do I draw a skull, how does the light bounce off my subject are just a few of the questions you'll be asked. However, if you cannot ask yourself why you're learning to draw and say you either want to enrich your life by learning a skill of self-expression or to have fun, you should stop immediately. (This is assuming you don't want to make it a career. That requires a whole other set of skills.) Learning to draw is not something that society inherently encourages people to do. It is much better (because it is more profitable) to be able to perform basic arithmetic, draft papers, give public speeches, test taking skills, learn how to study texts to then regurgitate the information on a test later, etc. If you go into pursuing art because you feel some moralistic obligation ("I HAVE to learn it because x"), ask yourself if the relationship you have with art is healthy or if it is an extension of some grander way you perceive your relationship of how you express yourself as a whole. I say this, because I hate seeing people who constantly whine and complain over their art, talking about how horrible it is and how they perceive themselves, or how they look at art years down the line as a monster of their own creation instead of a fun little thing to do when they're bored now that they're so knee-deep in it. And if drawing doesn't work for you, don't fret. There are so many different mediums (calligraphy, pixel art, painting, iconography, etc.) and so many different forms of expression (dance, music, etc.), and unless you wish to publicly share the prowess you specifically achieved with any of them as a means to show your expertise (or lack thereof like those shitty art accounts made as a parody), it should only matter to YOU how deeply you wish to learn and master the concepts.

    To be honest, I don't consider myself talented, so in my mind I'm worried it may take me longer than 2 years (I said "longer" than 2 years, not in 2 years) to feel like I'm finally getting good enough to start earning money even if I see someone else getting there faster. And this is coming from someone who actually have the art school course too from Marc. Hack, some part of me even worry that I'll never get good even if I practice everysingle day. That being said, I still like seeing others getting there in just 1 year though, even if I don't consider myself talented, even if I'm abit concerned that it might take me triple the amount of time to get to that point, it's still encouraging to see that being possible for other people, on the plus side that does mean I won't disappoint myself it I don't get good in 2 years, though I am scared as of right now because of it. Since I'm pretty new, hopefully I can get good, in 2 years if not 1 just like how I was recommended to draw for 2 years. Hopefully, lol XD
