One of my favorite exercises I practiced with my Flowlabs friends in New York was conversing in a non-existent language-a language that doesn’t exist, an alien language. We weren’t allowed to use English, our native languages, or any familiar words. The goal was to create sounds and communicate with others using tongue movements and vocal expressions I wasn’t accustomed to.
At first, I kept slipping into English or Korean, and familiar sounds naturally came out, which was incredibly frustrating. It was so difficult to create a completely new language on the spot and convey emotions through it. But once I let go of the idea of “language” existing and focused solely on the sounds, it became much simpler to exchange emotions.
Language, after all, is a tool we’ve agreed upon to express our thoughts and emotions using predefined words. However, sometimes, this very language wraps us up and surrounds us, becoming an obstacle to expressing the deeper parts of our inner selves. Don’t you think?
뉴욕에서 Flowlabs 친구들과 활동하며 했던 연습법 중에 제가 가장 좋아했던 연습법은, 세상에 존재하지 않는 언어로, 내가 모르는 언어로, 외계어로 대화 해보는 훈련이었습니다. 영어도 하면 안되고, 각자의 모국어도 안되고, 내가 평상시 써보지 않은 혀의 근육으로 소리 내어 상대방과 대화해보는 훈련이었어요. 처음엔 막 영어가 튀어나오고, 한국어로 튀어나오고, 익숙한 발음으로 발성이 나가니 정말 답답했어요. 내가 모르는 언어를 그 자리에서 만들어내어 감정을 전달하는 것이 정말 힘들었는데, 막상 이 세상에 언어가 존재하지 않는다 생각하고 소리에만 집중하니 감정을 주고 받는 것이 훨씬 단순해 지더라구요. ‘말’이라는 것이, 우리가 약속한 단어로 우리의 생각과 감정을 표현하는 것이지만, 때로는 그 언어가 우리를 포장하고 둘러싸, 나의 깊은 내면을 표현하기에 장애물이 되기도 하는 것 같아요. 그렇지 않나요?

우리는 만난 지 하루 만에 이 촬영을 계획하였습니다. 촬영 전 서로를 처음 마주하고, 알아가고, 서로가 가진 소리를 내보는 시간은 총 2시간이었습니다. 그 후 촬영장에 도착해 즉석에서 만든 곡들입니다
녹화 후 제목을 붙였습니다.

[Improvisation Challenge: Part 3]
This is the third video of a challenge where we create lyrics and compose music on the spot, relying solely on our senses without any sheet music.
We planned this shoot just one day after meeting each other. Before filming, we spent a total of two hours getting to know one another and exploring the sounds we each carry. The songs you’ll hear were created entirely on the spot upon arriving at the filming location.
