Autumn Years | Autumn Forest Scenes & Contemplation
Join me as I wander through my local woodland in Autumn and contemplate a few things I've been thinking about lately.
You may have noticed I've been quiet last couple of weeks, that is because I have been away from home training some Royal Air Force guys and that always gives me time to think about things.

Best Outdoor Hack EVER? No Fire, No Stove, Just a Hot Meal!

Is this one of the most underrated pieces of outdoor gear? Vacuum flasks allow you to have a hot meal or drink without a fire or stove, yet nobody talks about them. There are a million videos on Stoves, but hardly any on this old school champion of portable hot food. In this video I look at vacuum flasks and talk about the benefits an main disadvantage and what to look for when considering purc...

Leather vs Fabric Hiking boots

Causes of Heatstroke in dogs. Its Not What You Think

There is a lot of misinformation out there regarding the causes of heatstroke in dogs. Some well-intentioned such as the infographics we see on Facebook telling how hot is too hot to walk our dogs but they are often simplified to make it easier to understand for the masses. You have to bear in mind its a military bag and a 3 layer system is used. Everything they need to survive will be in their pockets, every thing they need to fight will be on their webbing and the basic tools to live will be in here. Its an assault pack so its designed not to weigh them down, they may have to fight wearing it and so they will only have essentials adn they will usually be getting re-supplied with water, food and ammo from the support group.

The chances are very small, this is really to give people who do overthink something practical to think about rather than worrying, it can make them feel safer. That said, a friend and I once had to do an orderly retreat after a group of teens started throwing stones at us. They didn't quite plan for the fact we had both brought our catapults for something to do and we ended up pepper potting our way out whilst keeping them out of their range. I also had to bug out last year when I woke in the middle of an exercise!

48 years ago, having run out of money, I spent a night wild camping in a park in the centre of Athens, Greece. Lot of people around, but I scouted out some dense bushes right on the edge of the park and crept in there when it was dark. Had already spent 6 weeks wild camping on Crete. Back in those days I didn't snore😂 . Also I read that these days a lot of immigrants sleep there. Home next day by coach, in the days before cheap flights.

the oak king n holly king n other pagan beliefs interest me, cant remember if u done it already or not .n dunno if it wld interest u or not, but one thing many bushcrafters, survivalists, campers, hikers etc do is a £25, £50 n £100 , 24 hr survival challenge,. kit all inclusive only bought from supermarkett or DIY store or poundshop eg blanket instead of sleepingbag,, bog standard general purpose tarp, the sort market traders use on their stall, or gardeners use, etc etc, ,best to buy this is spring or summer when supermarkets etc have gardening n outdoor items,, ive only seen one or two UK people do this, all the rest have been american where their supermarkets are massive n sell everything unlike ours. its interesting to see alternative uses that people come up with. also maybe honest reviews of items from high street stores, middle of lidl ald,i argos etc, but this costs money to buy them, another idea is doing videos with someone else, such as TA outdoors?

@@dogdadoutdoors TBH i dont pay attention to how many subscribers someone has, IDK how many subscribers kent survival has n his content doesnt interest as much as yours but TA outdoors v recently done a video with kent survival. if u did photography stuff personally that wld interest me too. u wld already know thatt many people have 2 or 3 channels for slight;y different things. in late spring/early summer asda owned by walmart sell alot of camping stuff name is something like ozark trail which is sold in walmart in america too, also halfords sell camping stuff i dunno how good stuff is from halfords asda etc , cld be risky , might be interesting to review, personally i find army surplus items a good bet but a little heavy for me a woman. i turn to online reviews before buying most things, n not just camping /wilderness stuff. always at the end of a vid say pls like and subscribe n something like it only takes a second it doesnt cost you anything but it means a lot to me, im guilty of sometimes forgetting to like if someone does not remind me at the end of their video . maybe a vid on what to put in a small basic sewing kit n how to repair a hole / rip in material, how to sew on a button etc, i dont need it but many people dont know how to do this n dont know about thing like a needle threader or self threading needles, nylon thread as well as cotton thread. also is a small tube of glue/superglue good to include as well?, can it also be used in first aid kit as well,? first aid cld also involve sewing . army training involves or at least use to involve basic sewing skills. maybe a vid on yr favourite books? after reading reviews on amazon n wanting a book i bought collins mini gem pocket size survival guide ,since buying it ive seen loads of vids online with people rating it highly. maybe a vid on what kit do you not need what kit is a waste of money, n space, im not really a minimal person more of a what if person which isnt good. maybe how to tie different types of knots n when to use them? edible and medicinal plants that grow in the wild in different seasons n how to identify them, same with deadly plants esp if u got dogs , how to turn a flat tarp sheet into a hammock. just a few ideas u can take or leave, im not a creator so u know more than me. i get fed up of people not knowing what they are talking about one person reviewing a survival tin saying ferro rod is crap n doesnt work but he didnt take black coating off before trying to use it to light fire, same person or someone else saying whistle iin survival tin s crap but he doesnt know how to use whistle, i got same survival tin n nothing wrong with whistle, maybe a vid on what to include in your own DIY survival tin? maybe how to make fishing hooks from paperclips n ring pulls from can of drink? personally im interested in how to customise crap i already got lying around at home n dual purpose/multipurpose items. . I seen a vid some camper or hiker takes water from a stream into a mug/container n drinks it straight away, without treating it in any way, it was in highlands of scotland or somewhere similar, ok so unlikely to be contaminated by humans, but still not safe to drink straight away, animals use n die in that water, n coz he does it, people watching his vid are likely to think it safe n copy it too! u know what u are talking about u have knowledge experience and wisdom that comes with age that a twenty something just wont have, use it your advantage..sorry this is long n i guess most people will not read it.

Mine had a screw on cup in addition to the screw on stopper. The cup was needed because I'd have to let the coffee cool down to a drinkable temperature. Just seeing the steam eminating from the bottle was a morale booster.

I would love a pair of really nice russell moccasins but the thing that gets me is the astronomical price. Those types of leather boots are so appealing to me because they just look handmade and beautiful, while also still looking rugged and maintaining longevity. Modern hiking boots are usually mass produced and still have their advantages such as waterproofing technology but the russells last forever and still provide a great product throughout the years

    • @dogdadoutdoors
      @dogdadoutdoors 18 днів тому

They do have a look to them. I worry about extra stiching as it can be a point of water ingress but they certainly look beautiful. Some things are like that I guess, they just appeal from an aesthetic point of view. I bought a new camera, a Nikon Zf, its awkward to hold without buying an additional grip, but those old fashioned dials and the 'clunk' as you turn them, gorgeous. Makes me want to go out and take pictures.

Having done a lot of work as a security guard I will second your recommendation of a 3 D cell Maglight. It is my primary go to flashlight when I'm working outside at night. Maglight has a variant using a proprietary LED that puts out an amazing amount of light, is highly resistant to damage from impact (unlike a bulb which could break if you dropped it) and has good battery life. The only real problem with a Maglight in general is that the rubber boot that covers the switch is prone to coming off. But some duct tape over the boot can be a reasonable fix.

Very useful video. We have many roads like this near where I live, and I filmed some content like this a while back, but don't think I ever uploaded it. One of the things I do is to carry a pair of walking poles, and when cars approach I carry them across my body at waist height, as many car drivers don't give pedestrians room, but equally they don't want to scratch their shiny cars, so they do move to avoid the tips of the poles damaging their vehicles. Not many people are aware of this, but on unpaved roads where there are pedestrians, car drivers are supposed to slow down as they pass AND give 2 metres of clearance. Thanks for taking the time to make this video and for uploading.

... however, IMO, if u feel the need to buy military ration packs dont buy from an online company, they just want their company to grow bigger n richer, better to buy from an individual on ebay, marketplace, gumtree etc from someone whom is or was in sevice,, along with item description they write things like this is left over from when I was serving... this is surplus from when I was touring in ...they also sell the usual household items as well which companies dont do. i just bought powdered drink water tablets n fire n water proof matches from ebay sellers v8ratty and hadworsedays1, i dont know these people personally, but best to buy from an individual u dont know what they might be needing money for,, disability aids at home due to disability,, counselling due to mental illness, maybe they volunteer thier time to train cadets , etc, etc.

I have both. I think the key difference for me is that leather will always reward you with comfort and is repairable. Synthetic materials will be consistent out the box but will need replacing. Synthetic can offer better insulation properties if working at or above the snow line and you don’t need to treat them with anything if you don’t want to. To get a proper leather boot, you’re talking 3-4mm leather which weighs A LOT and is going to cost £500-750 outlay. I now avoid waterproof lined leather boots because no manufacturer can make a lining that works long term, or is fully repairable. Meindl are shocking for this and their warranty is a joke - they won’t cover anything and always have an excuse. If I’m out for multiple days and need reliability, there’s no contest and I’m reaching for my heavy triple stitched single piece leather boot (Dundas store Bjorn). They won’t let you down when you can’t afford it in the middle of nowhere. The risk with a glued synthetic boot is the sole and uppers can fail. That happens on the side of a mountain or the middle of a multi day hike; that’s gutting and potentially dangerous (carry approach shoes in bag). The other issue I see a lot with leather boots now is most £200-300 boots simply aren’t well made and are also glued together (not stitched) with the goretex liner which will fail before the rest of the boot. Therefore, if you have the money, buy both but spend the extra on a double or triple stitched leather boot. If you don’t have the money, buy a decent synthetic boot but make sure you keep it clean to minimise risk of premature failing. The other thing seldom mentioned is investing in good quality insoles for boots to give you that extra support when your feet get tired and decent socks. Both things can totally change your experience. if i need insulation with low weight for day trips, I’m reaching for my Asolo Fugitive because they are the best all rounder I’ve found. Give the boots a rinse (inside and out) to keep sweat and sediment from wearing through the goretex liner, and you’re good. If need reliability then I’m reaching for the Dundas - and they are one B-E-A-utiful boot 😎

When I was school-age (now in late 60s), we were told to walk on the right to face oncoming traffic (as you said). That gives two pairs of eyes observing. I often drive down country lanes and frequently now see people walk on any side, but appear to be mainly the left - are young people no longer told this?

When we grew up, we had the public information films, published by the central office of information. Remember all of the 'Charlie says' type adverts? They killed off the central office of information in 2012, and they no longer make them. This explains a lot I think!

I like that idea for a video, I'll look into that. Will have to weight until the spring though as I'm on a diet at the moment. With the pouch meals I think its just the convenience, easy to cook, no messy pans, doesn't get any easier really. There used to be a really good one called 'look what I found' which had really nice meals in a pouch from the supermarket but can't get them either. Fab idea though, I'll add that to the list. Oh, just did one on using food flasks which is kind of related.

wet wipes/baby wipes are v good for keeping clean n fresh during time of the month, dont get the really small sized ones coz you end up with half the blood on your hands, if you run out of sanitary products, turn to other things in your kit, if u got a small bath towel and a couple of flannels cut the bath towel up into pieces n use flannels as a bath towel, cloths meant for getting rid of condensation, etc, wash n reuse yr diy sanitary towels by immediately soaking them in cold water for a few hours whenever you change them,, n then boiling in salty water n then rinsing in cold water n then hang up to dry, cut up, attach to knickers with surgical tape gaffa tape whatever tape you got, raid yr first aid kit ,dressings meant for wounds or absorbent cotton material meant for a sling, etc, use yr common sense n think outside the box, material must be soft and absorbent so polyester wont be much good,, its a real pain in the arse,, female sanitary products are multipurpose, fire starters, first aid dressings for wounds used with surgical tape or gaffa tape, etc, so even blokes should consider adding female sanitary products to their kit.

Thanks for the excellent cautionary warnings to alert people to the dangers of walking on roads and night. Unfortunately Road Traffic Incidents have increased since the start of infections by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, commonly referred to as the Covid-19 illness. Take care out there as many Covid19 brain damaged people are driving vehicles and are suffering from impaired risk assessment and heightened aggressive responses. This increase in "accidents" was observed prior to the availability of any vaccines.
