After discovering a passion for film while running a photography/videography business, I decided to pursue filmmaking full time following a nine year career in the Royal Canadian Navy. The collaborative team-based environment of film is where I thrive, and my strong work ethic and drive mean I'm constantly improving my craft. I'm passionate about bringing stories to life through camera, lighting, and in the post suite - all while making a few good puns here and there too.
Hidden Gem - RED Komodo-X with Vintage Nikon AI-S Lenses
Recently got my hands on a set of Nikon Nikkor AI-S lenses, with these in the set: 20mm f/2.8, 24mm f/2.0, 35mm f/1.4, 50mm f/1.2, 85mm f/1.4 and the 135mm f/2.0, all cinemodded. Decided to go for a short hike with them to test them out! All of them were used in this video at various apertures. Hit me up with any questions.

#redkomodo #komodox #tofino #ucluelet Went away to Tofino last week and brought my new baby, the @reddigitalcinema Komodo-X, along with me! Just a random assortment of shots I threw together for this edit, nothing fancy, just wanted to see what this camera could do out in natural light. Filmed using @SIRUIImaging 1.6x FF Anamorphic lenses, and had the quality at LQ for the week with a mix of al...

Did you turn off rock steady when you use 180° degree rule with nd filters?
@@JustGio996 no, I kept it on to see what it was like. Sadly not perfect, it needs sharper frames, something like 90deg or 45deg worked better. Further down the video, I turn on auto shutter and you’ll see how much smoother it is.
This video was an absolute delight!
@@RebaLowery-i9r thank you!

Why do you shoot at 24 fps? Monitor refresh rates are 60 Hz, so that results in choppy motion even with the motion blurring. Why not shoot at 30 fps or 60 fps for smoother motion? You are not shooting a narrative film for projection in a cinema, so what is the point of imitating what filmmakers do?
Because I’m a filmmaker and wanted to have regular motion blur 🤷🏻♂️
@@itsathingimagery By "regular" motion blur you mean 24 fps motion blur that one sees in cinemas from projectors. But, you do not see "regular" cinema motion on computer monitors, no matter what the blur. Your UA-cam videos are not narrative films, and your viewers are unlikely to be shooting narrative films to be projected in theaters. They will imitate you, since your videos are very good, but on this issue I am not sure you are setting a good example for your audience. In any case, they should be aware of this issue.
@@markr041 motion blur isn’t exclusive to projectors, you can see the difference of a soap opera at 30fps vs a narrative film at 24fps on your computer or television. You may have frame smoothening turned on your monitor or tv then as that’s a setting that tries to smooth out motion blur by making it appear more digital, but as an editor, filmmaker and having an honours degree in film production, I can assure you motion blur exists outside of a cinema projector. Do you own a camera yourself and film your own projects?
@@itsathingimagery Of course motion blur "exists" outside of cinema (it exists in the real world, which is why we use it in filming). You missed the point. All you *film* school guys are alike (:)). Any motion not depicted by 24 fps with 180 shutter angle is "soap opera"! Are 60 fps TV broadcasts of football and basketball games "soap opera"? That ESPN, FOX network and ABC network chose to broadcast at 60P is not because they carry soap operas. It is because 60 fps (progressive) captures motion better than 24 fps on TV's. And, yes, I know that most TV shows are shot at 24 fps (because they went to the same schools). But, leave that aside (and whether I am a movie producer, an Emmy-winning DP, a Nobel Prize winner in optics, or a housewife). Most UA-cam videos are seen on phones and computer monitors at 60 Hz refresh rates, so they cannot possibly replicate the motion (a combination of the shutter-speed blur and the frequency of the frames) seen in theaters from video shot at 24 fps. Now, streaming services (like Prime video and their Firestick) are automatically adjusting TV's to correctly show 24 fps, and I applaud that. People should be able to see film as it was intended to be seen. But that discussion and your credentials (and the high quality of your videos) are irrelevant to the point - your viewers are not shooting video for narrative films to be shown in movie theaters. They (most) are shooting video for social media, seen on phones and computer screens that do not refresh at 24Hz. And your video at 24 fps is not seen as you would like it to be seen by anybody at all (24Hz refresh) either. So, why should your viewers be encouraged to shoot at 24 fps, which gives choppy motion, unlike in movie theaters? Should they shoot action sports at 24 fps? The Action 4 is an action cam, for shooting action, for which slow frame rates are least suited (I know that you know you have to be very careful with pans at 24p and dolly shots cannot be too fast).
@@markr041 you’re a sassy one, hey? 😏 Soap operas specifically are 30fps, not everything is a soap opera, it was an example that you decided to fly off the handles with 😂 I enjoy filming with the motion blur 24fps at 180 shutter, call it a matter of personal preference. Want to see the difference on your phone? Go to the point in my video where I turn on auto shutter and you’ll see the difference. All my videos are in 24fps 180deg shutter and look perfectly fine 🤷🏻♂️ you can also see the difference on any video online and on UA-cam when people share the difference, could be worth checking out yourself to grasp this fundamental concept! Hell, test it yourself and upload it privately to your UA-cam, that motion blur will make an appearance regardless of your monitor’s refresh rates 😂 Wave your hands in front of your camera at 24fps 180 deg shutter, then try auto shutter (or something like 45 deg) and see the difference while it’s uploaded to your UA-cam. Then try a different fps, say 30fps in a 30fps project in resolve, then upload and test it too. Do it all you like, you’ll see a difference on your phone and monitor compared to 24fps 180deg shutter.
Beautiful bro!
Thanks man! Not bad for throwing random clips together!
SO GOOD!
Yoooo thanks brother!!
Gorgeous footage!
Beautiful
Hey sorry late to comment, I own the med dslr cube and was going to buy the x30 as well. After 7 months have you noticed any real wear issues with the size? I’m interested in your experience
5:20 this was the smooothest transition I ever saw.
Ayyy thanks!
This looks super sharp already. Bought one last week, and the footage fits in with other very sharp footage without looking different in any way.
And I had my settings at -2 as well! Definitely didn’t need any extra sharpening
Sick do more jumps
Will do when they’re up! Very minimal on the mountain atm
Link to the cage! amzn.to/3tUttD7
such a good review and awesome exposure
Thanks so much!
Loved the format of the video. I also wish they made it easier to use an external mic. The case they supplied should have had a cold shoe and also the magnetic mic should have had a 1/4 thread but besides that I like the build of the camera.
I’m going to make a short about this later, but I just found the SmallRig cage for it and it works well with the mic!
DJI osmo action 4 is good camera, but the "colours" in video shot looked washed out. Almost every video shot with it will require mandatory colour grading during editing
That’s why the D-log M is used - for colour grading. If it’s not something you want to do, you can turn off the setting and go back to 8-bit with a coloured profile!
Looks more cinematic tbh son
How many batteries do you own for your osmo action 4?
I got the adventure pack, so 3!
This is a great video
Thanks a ton!
The color grading is neat! Would be nice if I can buy it as a Lut.
Great video! One of the best OA4 review video. Can you share the setting you use, especial at 12:29. Do you reduce the sharpness in body or in post? It doesn't look digital at all !
Thanks! The settings were 1/50sec, ISO 100, 5600K, 24fps, -2 sharpness and -2 noise reduction!
I think I also had my ND16 on, or ND32, can’t remember
Super nice riding with you :P I was just wondering, because I'm also often longboarding with my Action 4. Is there a reason why you put the strap on the back shoulder ? Because I always put it on the front one, thinking that would be more constant and stable, but your angle looks awesome 🤩
Honestly, I didn’t consider which one to use in that sense. I have my peak design backpack camera clip-on thing on the other shoulder. Thinking about it, I kinda dig it on the side I have to show more of my body rather than showing the whole view, like you’re there with me rather than just watching the world fly by.
this video is by far THE most cinematic action4 footage i've ever seen so far on youtube... gees... do you mind sharing your other settings other than 1/50 shutter, ND8/16 filter and D-Log M.. most importantly do you turn the sharpness down? cuz i find even the default (0) level looks way over sharpened and wierd. currently almost no review on youtube touches this topic and everyone seems to be happy with the default output result. however to my eyes in all those review samples comparing action 4 and gopro11, action 4 footages are always over sharpend, almost unpleasant while gopro 11 footages looks more natural and clean. But none of the over sharpening i've mentioned can be found in your video... it's just ...pleasant to the eyes...so im very curious of your settings. i mean if i can get the same level of smooth and clean video right out of the box i would've bought the action 4 in a heartbeat.
Hey man! Thanks so much for the kind words! I have my noise reduction and sharpening set to -2 and control it all in post. I hated that sharp look out of the box and always grade my work so it made sense.
@@itsathingimagery hey thanks for sharing and confirming my thoughts! glad that im not the only one find the default sharpened output hard to watch 😂i hate that look too.. now that i know turning the sharpening to -2 can solve the problem, my action 4 is on the way🍻
@@ZachACameraGuy hell yeah dude! Definitely an awesome purchase 😎
Really cool video! 😍 Did you end with a 2.8:1 aspect ratio or did you crop it to 2.4:1?
I cropped it in post! I liked having the cropping space on either side to give me room to readjust my composition
@@itsathingimagery Thank you 🤗
Great video. Really calm delivery 👏👏 Looking to get one of these cameras myself. Anyway you got another sub from me. Good luck with the channel
Which is best to shoot films….in a professional way…..which aperture, what mm? I mean which one is good f1.8 or t2.9 and 1.6x or 1.8x lense Which one is good for films….cinematic films?
Ok but the color of this video is just like straight out of the camera? Or did you grade it?
I graded it in Resolve!
@@itsathingimagery great work man!
@@MrHombre thanks! The 10-bit footage was nice to play with
that's professional video. ✋
Ayyy thanks! Appreciate it!
Good review. Its hard to find a lot of footage for the action 4 from reviewers because for the majority of the other channels videos, the footage isn’t even from the action 4. So thank you
I noticed the same thing, you only saw little clips and barely got to sit with it. It was necessary and not a problem at all!
Welcome to the family. Hope you enjoy no more gopro screws and software crashing/delays 😂
So far I’m absolutely digging it! Can’t believe how nice the system is, and that image 🤌🏼
Yup - had mine a month and am absolutely loving it, been GoPro since the H4 but after several 11’s including a mini either glitching or overheating I went to the Action 4, at this moment in time I’m never going back 👍🤝
Hello new friend i just subscribed 148 now i have the action 4 also
Thank you so much!! Hope you’re digging the Action 4
the difference between the Action mic and the DJI mic is insane. Makes me want to pick up the DJI Mics in the future.
RIGHT!! Such a noticeable difference and so seamless too!
is the receiver connected to action 4? or does the DJI mic just connect to the camera on its own?@@itsathingimagery
Enjoyed this video a lot! Tons of good info, really good looking footage. I still prefer the look with the ND on. Love that motion blur. How stable would this look when walking as opposed to longboarding with the 180 degree rule - maybe a test for a next video?
I really enjoy the motion blur too! I’ll definitely test that out on the next one. I also want to see what a 90 degree shutter would look like and if there’s a reasonable amount of motion blur, while giving sharper frames for that stabilization
@@itsathingimagery I’ll definitely tune in for that
You are wondering if you want the action 4 and boom you find a youtuber with good aesthetic nice review and generaly good guy!! Also someone finally uploads osmo footage in good quality
Thanks a ton!! I tried filming this in a realistic “action cam” setting and using only the action 4 to film it (aside from the two clips showing the camera).
U earned my subscribe. Nice
Thanks so much!
Nice video and helpful information! I ordered this cam and it's going to be my first action-cam. Very excited. PS. from whenever I see footage of vancouver - it's looking so nice! beautiful road along the coast! I'm jealous ;-)
Amazing! They’re so handy, I used this during a music festival to get a super wide shot of the bands and crowds while in the photo pit. You can take them anywhere!
Come visit sometime 😊
EIS and 180 degree shutter it is too much :P 90 maybe 45 it is much better, for 180 is good fot phisical stabilization (optical, ibis, gimbal etc)
Yeah I’d have to agree. I was hopeful when I tested this but will have to now test 90 or 45. I just want that motion blur, everything seems so much faster when it’s there for action sports!
Subbed!! Hi, was this color graded? 😊
Thank you! Yes it was, in DaVinci Resolve!
Promising Channel, you got my sub ❤
Thanks so much! Hoping to make monthly content and into weekly as the ideas flow in. Appreciate the investment 👊🏼
@@itsathingimagery with the Osmo action it's the same like the 3 times before. Shortly after DJIs release, GoPro will release it's competitor which is then superior - I then wait until the price of the new GoPro drops and bam the Osmo Action 5 will be released and we are back where all started 😭
@@eike.zender that’s a good game plan! I’m excited to see what the 12 brings to the table
Nice smoove ride 🤙, dope vid
Thanks man! Wish it was smoother at 180 degree shutter, but it’s not awful
Great video and format! Loving my osmo action 4 but still working out rhe best settings for me as a beginner. Did you tweak the sharpness and noise reduction at all? Many thanks 🙌👍
Yeah, I dropped both to -2 and did it all myself later in the grade! I actually didn’t sharpen later in post either, I found the image to be sharp enough on its own. I shot this at ISO 100, 1/50sec, 24fps, and 5600K as I wanted a cooler tone in this overcast sky
@@itsathingimagery fantastic many thanks for the reply!👍🙌
