As a pedal steel player I will tell you this, Jimmy Day never got the recognition he deserves, he is the cool hand Luke of the pedal steel guitar. Whether you agree or not, one of the best.

Buddy did so much for the pedal steel guitar. His style was brilliant. Saw him live once in the UK, with the Everly Brothers and Albert Lee. His harmonics surrounded the theatre.

Now...that is the "Jimmy Day; that" I loved when He was with Ray Price; and others in their "Hey-days". But I'm sorry; that I never liked his playing; when he would milk (as slow as it could be); and take up 25 minutes on one song; when his time was only 30 minutes on the stage. Now I know; most all out there; will hate me for saying that; but to me it WAS true. But... ...Because I loved JD and BE (and many) other greats I will say, May Jesus rests their precious Souls.

Buddy will forever own the benchmark for the mastery of the Pedal Steel Guitar. No one has the tasteful playing Buddy had, and he never overplayed in the second half of a melody . Many players when doing the second verse try to fit as many notes in as possible and so often they ruin their own performance by messing up. Buddy never did that, and his tone was pure perfection .

Nice piece of history here, and a very worthwhile listen. Thanks so much for sharing. Jim Lindsey once suggested Hogue was Emmons and Knight was Green, and I hear Junior's good Green, but I also hear some Hughey in both on this piece . . . and . . . maybe Hogue was Hogue.
