I am a Chartered Professional Engineer based on Auckland's North Shore specializing in the structural design of buildings.
I'm planning to deliver a series of online seminars to Structural Engineers.
“An Overview of the Structural Design Process”
“Qualitative Structural Engineering”
“Learning From Failure: Designing Against Disproportionate Collapse”
“Inspection & Appraisal of New & Existing Structures”
“Preparation of Calculations and Structural Design Reports”
“Wind Analysis to NZS1170 Part 2”
“Seismic Assessment of Existing Buildings to NZSEE Guidelines”

Mathcad for Structural Engineers - Seismic Load Distribution via Stiff Diaphragms
Extract from CPD Seminar 28 "Stiff Diaphragms & Lateral Load Distribution". We go through the Mathcad sheet twice - once for the Engineers and then again for the Mathcad geeks showing the hidden code.

CPD Seminar #28 - Stiff Diaphragms & Lateral Load Distribution
Переглядів 12421 день тому
This time we look at how load is distributed into concrete walls supporting a stiff concrete diaphragm subject to seismic loads and accidental eccentricities giving rise to torsion on plan. The procedure follows NZS 1170.5 and NZSEE Guidelines This will be another seminar asking WTF does this spreadsheet do with the answer given using Mathcad.
A brief Introduction to Bentley Multiframe (2024) for portal frame analysis.

As part of the CPD seminar looking at Steel Portal Frame Design, here is a brief overview of the software used - namely Bentley Multiframe. We look at: the frame generator, - member and joint definition, number and labelling - allocation of material and section types - releasing member ends - over-constrained and under-constrained models - 1st order and 2nd order analysis - analysis results

Auckland Deep Thinkers "In Defence of Churchill"
Переглядів 412 місяці тому
This week's Deep Thinkers was intended to look into the "Wit & Wisdom of Winston Churchill" as he had an incredibly quick mind, a sharp tongue and a very large vocabulary. He loved playing with words - creating new ones, adapting old ones - and using words to his advantage. Instead it turned into a defence of Churchill against those re-writing history. The British voted Churchill the greatest B...

Great Video. I was wondering where has the minimum connection for shear 4*Mmin/L comes from?
Hi Callum, it's the shear arising from the applied minimum bending moment turned into an equivalent load on the span L.
When you are designing steel structures for cold stores at below zero degree temperatures do you specify below zero (LODMAT) for materials?
Hi Richard, there are 2 issues to consider here. First is the design of the insulated panel, which will need to be designed for a range of temperatures from the operational temperature of the freezer and the ambient temperature subject to solar gain. Probably more significant is the temperature difference between the inside of the panel and the outside of the panel. This can induce thermal bowing in the panel and may require stress cuts in the panel. The second issue is to do with the steel structure, which will require steel sufficient low temperature ductility. This is addressed in the project specification. The operational temperature of a freezer is lower than the LODMAT.
nice
Thanks
Good stuff Andy - came here from my friend's suggestion. You were chatting with this morning via email (from Fiji).
Welcome aboard!
Very good .
Thank you!
Nice
Thanks
SOOOOOO GOOOOOOOOOD
Thanks
who is this by?
Me 😆 I write the outline of the lyrics of a song - AI (Suno) turns it into a song. For this one, Suno generated more lyrics from my basic input. (For other songs - it just takes my lyrics and adds music.)
good
Thanks
i am a long follower of your meetup group, and I attend your online workshop sometimes. What I need to say is, it is crazy that you got so many extreme info. You can read more about ESG from all the world famous associations. Like UN, IMF, World forum, Harvard, Stanford. And if you ever lived in a place like India or China, you may felt the difference of the temperature and the clothes required to wear between recent 10 or 20 years.
Perhaps you should look into the funding and motivation of UN, WEF and IMF. Look a bit 'globalist' to me.
Wonderful Content
Thank you
Can I get a scaled down version of this design for a RCBC 600x300mm cheers

Bitcoin is fixed supply and nobody can change that, fiat can and will be printed into the ground and nobody can change that either!
Yes... we need to learn about this.
John’s recent interview by Leighton Smith on the Leighton Smith Podcast about the future of currency in New Zealand and the planned introduction of Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) was very well received, and due to popular demand, John was invited back for a further discussion with Leighton Smith. Awesome and interesting
Glad you think so!
Nice use of MathCAD to show it's versatility, even if I did come for some background info on SIPs.
Thanks. Check out the MathCad for Structural Engineers playlist.
@@daddypig6354I used it extensively for Infrared electro-optic design. It beats almost all the other computation software when you need real engineering answers with a level of confidence that you just don't get with Excel, Matlab, Python etc. (have a look at Ray Panko, University of Hawaii for studies of errors in Excel and 'spreadsheets')
Great video! Thanks for trying to bring more eyes to this issue
Thanks
Thanks for bringing the subject of various forms of slavery. The brain is the smartest organ in the body - according to the brain ;) Consider Western bias, location & funding of the source & Cui Bono. The map is Western Biased & we should talk about Techno Feudalism by FB, Google, Apple, Amazon, etc - another form of modern slavery. MIC, Big Pharma, Banks, MSM Propaganda, etc, would be the biggest human problem.
There is a bit of 'western bias' in that particular map as China and India are deep red. Obviously, they are large countries with large populations. I make the point that New Zealand (and western countries in general) should not feel so smug as they are not as good as they look. Even so, USA and UK are in the 100k-500k range, which is appalling for modern western democracies.
Great stuff. Thanks Andrew
Thanks
This was a good discussion, thank you for uploading it.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Your series are really helpful, I just wondering where is your Seminar #1? Thanks so much!
Sadly Seminar #1 was not recorded. If there's enough demand I may rerun it and record it. Still working on new ones.
Great stuff Andrew. Thanks.
Thanks
Great stuff Andrew. Thanks again for the educational material you're creating. I wonder if it is possible to get the file or a PDF version of it. Thanks.🙂
One day, I'll gather them all up into a book for sale
