Make your OWN snare drums in VPS Avenger 2 | Sound Design Tutorial
Переглядів 215День тому
In this video I show you my process to make custom snare drums in VPS Avenger 2. The flexibility of Avenger 2 is very helpful to make our snares as simple or as complex as we want, especially if we also create our presets with creative macros! Snare drums consist of a fundamental tone and noise, and depending on how we create and process these two elements, can drastically change the vibe of th...
VPS Avenger 2 as a DRUM MACHINE in FL Studio 2024 Tutorial

In this video I show you how I have set up VPS Avenger 2 in FL Studio 2024 as its own drum machine using multi-outs. This is where each drum output in Avenger is sent to an individual fader for isolated processing, which I then send to a master group to process all the drums together if needed. The cool part about this workflow, is we can work two different ways, we can use Avenger's drum seque...

Wow Jon this is such an awesome video I love it. Thanks dude.😃👍❤️
thank you so much dude!!
@@jonaudio You're very welcome. Much love.❤
Cool bass patch Jon 👍
Thanks dude!!
I appricate this video! I couldn't recreate this same type of bass with phaseplant + fruity waveshaper nor with phaseplant's shaper tool, but still after experimenting with phaseplant and effects I still improved a lot at bass sound design and got some results that I liked :)
That's awesome to hear that you improved your bass! Different synths and workflow will give a different result but generally the techniques will be the same and you'll end up with something cool and usable
Thank you very much! This was wonderful, I didn't know about that update before :)
You're very welcome 🤙🤙
Oh, but i forgot to say that this bass is sick. It reminds me of something you'd find in something like UVI's Emulation II recreation
Yeah man FM basses are so satisfying, then doing some processing afterwards to kind of dirty up the signal can give some super cool results. I always view FM clean basses as starting points. Basically like a typical p bass, and then you start using FX like you would use pedals ya know?
@@jonaudioyeah. I love this patch because its something unique from your collection of Industrialish/Synth wave/Gothy stuff you normally show us
Hey man, second video in a row where I see FL. Not shaming at all, as I'm starting to fall in love with FL, even as a Bitwig fantatic. The only thing it lacks for me is any form of MPE functionality, which I use in copious amount (all manually automated, as I dont own an MPE controller) So what's going on for you? Did you get homesick for FL's workflow?
I really really like both daws quite a bit, there are some things in FL I prefer and some things in bitwig I prefer. For this case I didn't have my midi controller hooked up, so using the typing to keyboard feature in FL is a better workflow for me than bitwigs version of typing to keyboard.
Yeah. The piano roll is godly. And man, I love the new chord progression generator @@jonaudio
100% agree with you there. Hands down the piano roll was what I missed the most. I'll die on this hill but FLs piano roll is by far the best. Nothing even can come close.
Thanks a lot
You're very welcome 🤙🤙
hey, I think you accidentaly said square wave when you ment sawtooth at the second example.. should correct that, otherwise it will be very confusing for beginners who if I get it right your tutorial is for.. 🙂
The recreation is spot on. also just for some trivia the original sample that Flake used in the song is from trilian
Thanks! Thats super interesting, didn't know exactly what he used for the bass. I know flake uses a lot of omnisphere as well
@@jonaudio Yep, he uses softwares like Omnisphere or Abysynth etc a lot. He also uses sample packs and libraries of synths he used like the Ensoniq ASR-10 or he just makes the sounds himself.
Flstudio used to have that automation option. But it was gone in later version. So this is why I'm actually thinking about switching
Totally understandable. FLs automation can be somewhat strange at times
through multiouput can u still trigger each sample directly from the sequencer? like i dont want to insert 4 kicks in to midi, instead just one midi line plays only the kick etc, so basically still getting the rythmy from the sqeunecer but playing just one sample at a time within their own channel soloely
Not completely understanding what you mean. With multi out you now have the choice of using the piano roll to sequence the drums, or you can use avengers sequencer with its midi patterns. In both cases each sample gets sent to its own mixer track
@@jonaudio i want to play each drum seperately from midi without drawinh my own rythym, instead using the sequencer rythym. But i tried everything i cant get it to do so. It plays all of them with one note or then seperately played must draw own pattern, do u get me?
@trox6512 if you want to use avengers sequencer, the sequencer has to be on and then in the piano roll, you just put a long midi note for how long you want the sequence to place for. If you want to bypass avengers sequencer, turn in off in the routing section and key in or play the notes to make your own drume groove in the piano roll
thats not VCA, thats a BUS. The main difference is: the way how you did in the video (moving channel #2) adjusted the POST-FADER, but VCA is a controlling channel that move all the PRE-FADER at the same time and no FX or panning/FX. VCA is like selecting multiple channels and move all faders at once. FL doesn't have VCA channel option. The only way to make a "VCA type of channel is using control surface and link channels you wanna control ".
Muy completo bitwig pero la interfaz sigue siendo muy angustiosa,y cada vez más.
Absolutely no FM on these sounds!
nice !
do you know how to trigger marker jump with midi controler??
That I don't know, never had a reason to do it. Now I'm curious 🤔
@@jonaudio it can be a great tool for live playing
LMAO I am dead. Excellent tutorial, much better than any other tutorial by far 10/10 would smash hell yeah bruv
I gotchu 🤣🤣
Thank you so much Jon, well explained all the details. I finished all of them.
You're very welcome!! Glad to hear it!!
Awesome Tutorial. I write guitars, but like to have some BASS to fill in my rhythms. So I run this preset through a digitl bass amp, cab, EQ for a bit more real low end, room effects. Sounds good enough for demoing my projects to my band. THANKS!
That's a really cool idea to run it thru your rig like that!! Hope you're getting some cool results!!
whyd u say doody like that😂
Is there a normal way to say duty? Lol
@@jonaudio ur hilarious
When you install it, does it ask you if you're mac/pc or is it compatible for both?
The skin is OS agnostic, you just have to copy the files to the directories diva is looking at. It will be a different file path for both Mac and PC however
How does this not have like 100,000 views on it yet? 😮😅
That would be awesome!
@@jonaudioI’m serious brother! Your entire Pigments series is incredible! It’s saved me months of trial and error! More importantly it’s helped me navigate the steep learning curve with some of the tools in Pigments (like the function and random tools)… with everyone craving content like yours I wish I knew of a way to help boost you into the algorithm better… because I KNOW there is an entire segment of the synthesizer population out there that needs your content!
Thanks, Jon! Great tutorial. I'm glad you're showing us your sound design techniques for drums and percussion on Avenger 2. I enjoyed the one on kicks. I loved your "full kit" Pigments series and hope you'll do the other pieces of a kit in Avenger 2. And what I'd really love to see you design is a realistic gong. Talk about screws to turn. I was surprised you didn't add an oscillator for an atonal transient, like you did with your Pigments snare. Is the "Spike" part of the Avenger 2 amp enough that you don't need one?
Thank you so much! A realistic gong sounds like a very fun challenge!! The spike helps give the snare a little more pop in my opinion. There's so many little different things you can play with to get all sorts of different variations. Another cool way is instead of using noise for the rattles, using FM on a very detuned oscillator with lots of unison, and using a random modulation source to slightly adjust the FM amount so each hit then becomes unique FM
@@jonaudio 👍
Excellent 🖖
Love Avenger 👌
Same here! My all time favorite synth!
Amen. Jon's master series on Avenger 2 got me to dust off my own copy, and, as Jon puts it, it's my "workhorse synth".
This is a superb instrument…if it’s good enough for Howard Scarr to use / program then it’s fine by me…I love it - worth every penny of the very modest cost
100% all the stuff from u-he is top quality. I never stop being amazing at how good their stuff sounds. and with hive you get such optimized CPU usage and still top sound quality. its truly amazing! and the more comfortable you get in it, you'll become lightning fast with it!
👍👍👍❤
its great to see you man!! hope you're doing good!!
@@jonaudio Thanks Jon! I hope so. I've been busy for a while. I'm studying hard for learning English language like an American! haha. I learned a lot from your tutorials man. You are my favorite UA-camr! Best Wishes to you!
Just bought this little fella on the last sale :-)
hell yeah!! its a badass synth!! super buttery!
thanks for this , I'm still pretty new to pigments in general. love this specific sound as well. firestarter vibes.
you're very welcome!! pigments is awesome! such a great UI and very smooth to use with a great sound!
what the hell i thought we were bitwig buddies
Lol Ive collected synths, daws, plugins, etc for so many years it'd be a shame to never use them again. Depending on what I'm doing I'll either use bitwig, FL, or pro tools.
It's funny, because I'm discovering more and more things which I love dearly about FL that makes me want to use it in certain scenerios over Bitwig. The only thing that I couldn't use FL as much as Bitwig's (aside from the obvious stuff about the Grid and magical modulation devices) is that it has no MPE support. And while I don't have an MPE controller, I always manually use the micro tunning and other MPE parameters in a lot of my songs now. @@jonaudio
Hey Jon - Just sent you a few bucks 🎉 Thank you for your work and your inspiration 😎
Thank you so much!! I really appreciate it!! And you're very welcome my man!! 🙏🙏🙌🙌

This is so fun, man. Favorite patch creation vid yet. I task you to recreate all your avenger patches in the Grid. And then do an A/B...and...go!

Lol it's hard not to laugh everytime I say that word. Doooooooooty

How do I convert Hz to semitones?
in the advanced panel, then in the display panel on the bottom left of the screen, there you can switch between hz and semitones
I have been considering BW for some time and I just started playing around with it. In the last few years I have been programming almost all my drums as samples in the playlist, gives me so much control to change every individual hit in subtle and not so subtle way, I have hardly programmed them in channel at all. Just a little poking around has convinced me BW will completely change how I do this for the better. Now I just have to deal with the guilt of cheating on my main DAW of 12 years. Not even joking it kinda hurts. FL will never fully leave me though. (Also realizing having the main cursor tools bound to the number keys just makes sense, I hardly even had to learn them despite B-P-E-C being very well burned in my memory.)
Totally know what you're feeling there. I would say though that if you do pick up bitwig, doesn't mean you completely stop using FL. I personally use bitwig, FL and pro tools depending on what I'm wanting to accomplish. They are all great tools to have. I see it in a way I see synthesizers, I absolutely love Avenger 2 but I also use Diva, Repro, pigments etc.. Depending on what I'm working on. Bitwig should be an addition to your tool box, not necessarily a replacement ya know?
I Just switched from FL to Bitwig.. I freaking love Bitwig. But FL is still in my routine. It's crazy because I've been on FL since Fruity Loops 3.. like 04 and Pro Tools 2.5 like 02-03 era. The Piano Roll expressions in Bitwig and the Modular racks right in the Work Flow was my reason for Going to Bitwig.and you're right. Learning the stuff behind Bitwig is not a chore at all. It's legit nice.
Bitwig is an amazing daw and has so many tool to add to our workflow. That being said, I still use FL and Pro tools depending on what km working on. Having all three daws is having access to a looooot of great tools.
Awesome tutorial another quick tip is to set the vibrato on individual and play around with the rate get nice big leads
That's a great tip! Thanks for sharing!
Excellent series. Thank you!
thank you so much!! you're very welcome!
Great tutorial! Does this only really make sense to use on the coarse and filter? I know you can use it on anything (the beauty of pigments), but have you found any other things it can sound cool on?
I usually demonstrate different mod sources on the filter and tuning as its one of the most obvious ways to hear whats happening. for this the skys the limit, you can use it on just about anything, or if you run out of mod sources, this is another way to combine the ones you already have into something new
Fortunately I have Synthwave 4, so I can remake this lovely LD. Thanks Jon!
thats awesome! glad you we're able to follow along!
