Just a Little Homestead Update for Y'all!
Just a little update on what's been going on around the property so far this year! Also, I don't know why the camera kept wanting to focus/shake, but I'm going to blame the iPhone SE on this one. Sorry about that! xD

We got a little bit of snow mid-March (yes, I know I'm a bit late on posting this!), so this is what we've experienced as far as connection stability, obstruction downtime, and speed. :) Like us on Facebook: forestmeadowfarmofficial Follow us on Instagram: @forestmeadowfarm
Starlink Satellite Internet - 2 Week Update
Переглядів 22 тис.3 роки тому
UPDATE: I actually just checked our Viasat/Exede data usage thinking that we must have hit our 60GB data cap for it to be as slow as it was showing on the speed test in this video. Turns out... we HAVE NOT hit it yet. We are at 45 GB of usage, and it is STILL this slow! Need to fix this obstruction issue ASAP so that we can fully convert to Starlink. :( We are now 2 weeks into having Starlink a...
Our First Chick of 2021 Hatching :)

We set some barnyard mix eggs given to us from my dad, and this is just a quick time lapse video of our first chick hatching from this clutch - and this year! The eggs are from 1 Ameraucana Rooster & 1 Rhode Island Red Rooster over Ameraucana, Welsummer, Silver Laced Wyandotte, Rhode Island Red, Buff Orpington, and a few other hens I can't remember. This first one that hatched came out of a Wel...

Feeding Sprouts to Chickens

Chickens love sprouts. Who would’ve thought? 🤪 Sprouting seeds makes them 40-50% more digestible to chickens and increases nutrients by almost sixfold. HOW TO: Grow Sprouts for Chickens
Переглядів 47 тис.4 роки тому
After posting my last video, I had a few requests on how we grow sprouts for our chickens, so here it is! I’m sure there are a million videos and ways to do this, but this is how we do it with what we have on hand. Yes, it could be better, but if it works, it works! We are using trays and mason jars, but you can use ANYTHING to soak the seeds as long as the seeds are completely submerged and AN...

    You could dilute down some food grade 35% hydrogen peroxide and put some in the water.. That would help them and fight bacteria and mold.

    How many chickens will one tray feed each day? Great way of doing it, I was thinking 2nd tray myself.

    • @forestmeadowfarm6085
      @forestmeadowfarm6085 5 місяців тому

      This is mostly just a supplement to their normal feed, so regardless of how many chickens I have in a pen, I will just throw one tray in, and it's gone by the end of the day. My pens range from 5-20 chickens each.

    The reason why the grains are sprouting uneavenly is because even after you've drained them, one side still retains more water than the other. You should build a small shelf for the trays to sit on and cover it with tarp, then place the shelf somewhere outside. Drill holes 1 inch apart into the bottom of the pans so that they can drain evenly. This way, you can simply water the grains with a hose or watering can and then allow the water to drain through the holes in the bottom of the pans. Thank you for your video, though. I've seen others that have shown how to do this, but yours was the most explanatory. Make sure that the shelves are slotted, not completely solid, so that the water can properly drain.

    Been growing greens for our chickens for some time. I use a 2x8 ebb and flow tray and eight 1020 trays. Every other day I place 2 and a half cups of grain in a germination jar and wash and soak the seeds for two days. I then transfer to a 1020 tray in the ebb and flow . Every two days I start soaking another batch of seeds and transfer to a new 1020 and move the trays down the ebb and flow in order. Greens are ready to harvest in a week to 10 days based on your preference. Chickens get a fresh tray of greens every other day. I flood the ebb and flow tray twice a day for about two minutes with a nutrient solution with an ec of about 2.0 and pH of 5.8 to 6.2. Great nutritious treat for our flock.Good luck!

    I like the fact that you used a generic aluminum pan and did not drill holes in the bottom. There's probably sufficient water in the bottom to keep the seeds and roots hydrated. *Did you use 1 cup wheat seeds per pan? *Did you soak overnight and not 24 hrs? THX for the shortened video ❤😅

    • @forestmeadowfarm6085
      @forestmeadowfarm6085 5 місяців тому

      Sorry for the delayed response! I just used a generic mason jar filled 3/4 of the way up with seeds. I don't measure out the amount of seeds exactly. And yes, I soak for at least 24 hours with cold water but have done overnight if I am using warm water.

      Sorry for the late response! They do get late morning sun for a few hours, but we are completely surrounded by very tall pines, so it is mostly shaded for a good part of the day. The temperature in that spot ranges from 65-75 depending on the season.

    Hi Can I sprout corn like that?

  • @sandyp998
    @sandyp998 Рік тому

    I have heard that longer grass it not good for them as it can form a ball in their crop. Day 6 or 7 would be max length.

    • @christineha5824
      @christineha5824 Рік тому

      This mostly refers to grass clippings, like when people mow their lawns. The sprouts stay in a mat, so they would pick at it similar to how they would pick at grass growing out of the ground - by pecking and breaking off smaller pieces. I’ve not had any issues with crop impaction in the many years I’ve been doing this. These days, I take the sprouts out between day 6-8. Just whenever I remember to do it. Lol.

    • @kolobkolobkolobkolob
      @kolobkolobkolobkolob Рік тому

      That is true but you cut the grasses into shorter pieces although they are good at cutting up the grass themselves usually but I always cut it up for the girls and never have any problems.
