Sound Devices MixPre vs ZOOM F3 | 32-bit Float Recording
No one can deny the quality of a Sound Devices field recorder. And their indie film priced MixPre II series doesn't disappoint. But at the end of the day, we're after one thing on set and that's clean dialogue. And if you're a one-man band at times, you need a field recorder that supports 32-bit float and captures good sound.
The MixPre II does this, but it also costs a thousand bucks. Is there an alternative?
Today we look at the ZOOM F3 compared to the MixPre II when capturing dialogue in 32-bit float mode. The ZOOM F3 costs $300. So if it can do the job, that's a lot of money saved.

    Thanks for another great video! Quick question: I just bought a new laptop and when I play back videos in the edge browser or on my phone the color grade changes/becomes warmer in the first half of a second of the video, (but in Davinci or my Windows media player it remains consistent). Online, I can get it to play back in a consistent color grade if I toggle the Enhance Video feature, but that's not really an option in other scenarios, (like playing it back on my phone). Furthermore, since the color grades keep shifting I'm not sure what to grade for... Based on my research so far, I'm guessing it has something to do with my GPU and possibly the new AI video enhancement features online and with Nvidia GPUs etc, but I'm at a complete loss. If none of this makes sense, I understand, as I don't quite understand it myself 😅

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect День тому

      Hey Tasha, thanks! So the videos changing color: Where are you uploading them to? Also, how are you exporting them? Are they H.265 or H.264? You need to grade with a calibrated monitor hooked up to Blackmagic Design hardware so you're bypassing the GPU entirely. I grade in a color managed project using a DWG timeline, but monitor as Rec.709 Gamma 2.4. I get into grading in the actual school. Don't have that stuff on the channel at this time.

    • @TashaCaufield
      @TashaCaufield День тому

      @@writedirect Thanks so much for the response! It's looking more like the issue is starting in the edge browser. When I download onto my computer it's consistent, but then when I export (H265) and watch on my phone it does the quick change again in the beginning, (and only on the first run-through. Not if I rewind...) I'm doing more research into it as it seems like a GPU video enhancement feature helps with consistency when downloaded, but for now I think you're right about how to color grade so I'm looking to invest in that. (And finally calibrate.. It's scary changing factory settings! ☺️) Your course sounds awesome, so looking into that, as well. Thanks, again! 💫

    Sensor size actually does matter. Equivalent FOV and Equivalent DOF does not give you the same "look". You all are totally forgetting to factor in lens COMPRESSION. A 50mm will always look like a 50mm. Sensor sizes will only change how much of that 50mm FOV you get. I get it, there is so much to learn about in film making that most ppl never really get around to studying the way focal lengths behave. Not Equivalent focal lengths, but actual focal lengths. If I took a medium format 50mm lens and put it on a medium format camera, it will have a 35mm FOV in comparison to full frame. But if I cropped it in to match the field of view I get with full frame, it will look exactly the same as it does on full frame. Photo camera, medium format. The benefits of a bigger Sensor is being able to use longer focal lengths at the usual distance you would have used it if you had a smaller Sensor, and get drastically different compression effects. Compression changes the way everything looks. It's not that larger sensors are better, because better is defined by the needs of the user. Some people can't afford for subjects to fall in and out of focus too quickly, and they opt for smaller sensors and use wider lenses to get the FOV they want, with less DOF. I strictly use medium format speed boosters on My full frame camera for everything. Video, portraits, and event photography. Because the format size and compression effects, is my go to "canvas" to express my imagination. I don't even know how to like anything other than that, even if I'm limited to manual focus and vintage lenses for the rest of my life. It's not just FOV, it's compression, DOF at a given aperture, desired lens options, the list goes on. A 25mm lens will always give you some kind of "wide look" even if it's at a 50mm FOV, because it's 25MM! NOT 50MM! Not to mention bigger sensors not only demands physically longer focal lengths, they also demand getting closer than you normally would have, which also changes the way everything looks in the frame. I learn a lot from you video guys, buy you video guys have a lot to learn. And it's always the ones who's missing most of this knowledge, who's the first to put up an argument and make the most nonsensical comments.

    • @coreylee9794
      @coreylee9794 7 днів тому

      Long story short, a 25mm lens on a MFT camera will give you more background in the frame and make your subject look smaller, than a 50mm lens on a FF camera. A physically longer lens gives the effect of "making your background and subject" look bigger, even if it's the same FOV you had with a 25 on a MFT. Try it out for yourself

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect 7 днів тому

      Thanks for your knowledge and input! I absolutely agree, sensor size matters. That’s why I got the CC6K. Larger photosites theoretically will deliver a better image. All things being equal. And you’re right-a 50 mm lens on a full frame sensor is going to give you a much larger field of view than on a micro 4/3. It allows you to get wider shots without the distortion. On a Pocket 4K sometimes I have to be on a 24 when I’d rather be on a 50.

    Question! I have an ASUS PA328CV monitor. What do you think of the ProArt presets (display modes)? I compared all the modes with footage I colour graded and I feel like Standard Mode shows the most dynamic range. I tried Rec.709 mode but I think the shadows look really dark and lack range. :( Do you have an opinion about which mode i should use for now for accurate colours? I can't find any answers online about this because they all tell me to calibrate my monitor. Unfortunately, I don't have the money for that yet (I am also a cinematographer so I have a lot of expenses)!! Also thank you for these videos! I only had enough money for a new monitor but in the future, if I can afford to buy an UltraStudio Monitor 3G or Displaypro HL I will!

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect 8 днів тому

      I totally understand your situation. But what you’re trying to do is like pulling part of a required component out. Like removing shutter speed from the equation, but trying to get a cinematic look. You can only go so far. My recommendation would be to grade in the different modes, And have different versions of timelines for each grade. And then export all of those out and look at the quick times on other devices like an iPad Pro, etc. And from there see which one looks the most accurate.

Or position anything on your camera cage to push weight to the back. And worst case scenario, you can shoot and get decent shots without a perfect balance. I did that plenty of times on my last film. it won’t work for fancy gimbal moves. But for simple tracking, dolly in and out, stuff like that, it’ll do it.

      It depends on the phone and how you record. For example: the iPhone 15 Pro can actually record in a log format. But for most you’d do Rec.709 as it’s already in that color space.

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect 27 днів тому

      No-Whichever route you choose at the beginning, leave it that way. There’s nothing wrong with video level. If you think you get a better result that way. But Resolve and your display have to match on that setting. And you need them set that way before you create the 3D LUT. For me, data seemed better.

    32 bit float is a great solution for cabled microphones with a high SPL rating. Mic capsules can distort at high SPLs regardless of your bit rate. Additionally, wireless microphones require proper gain staging at the transmitter and do not transmit at 32 bits, so folks using wireless mics in their 32 bit recording device still need to be very careful with clipping the transmitter. Sincerely, a pro sound mixer :)

      Thanks man! So I primarily use a Senn MKH 416. Love the microphone. But I do notice at louder levels even if the field recorder doesn’t peak, I get bad audio that I have to do damage control with an EQ in post. Have you seen this with mic? What’s your preferred dialogue mic?

    • @nicolasfieldsoundservices
      @nicolasfieldsoundservices Місяць тому

      @@writedirect 416 has a relatively high SPL rating but the design doesn’t handle room reflections very well and can lead to phasey sounding recordings. Hi. Set up the focus motor. One problem: the focus ring makes a rumble noise when the motor gear wheels rotates the lens which the camera shoe mic picks up. Is this because it is not designed for video recording?

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect Місяць тому

      Typically you’re using a mic & field recorder to get your production sound. Or running a mic to the camera. If you’re using this for run and gun documentary type stuff, I would mount an external shotgun to the camera cage and position as far forward as you can. But most follow focus systems that are motorized are going to make some type of noise. The assumption for filmmaking is that you’re not positioning the mic by camera.

    Wait, what if you're using this for photo? Is it cine only?

    • @writedirect
      @writedirect Місяць тому

      I guess you could use this for photographs. But this assumes a 180° shutter. That is double the frame rate. So 24 frames would be a 1/48 shutter speed. So you can just do the math and set your frame rate to get the shutter speed you’re after and then you’ll get the correct setting. Hope that makes sense.

    • @writedirect

      It’s because your BRAW filed are in film mode, which is essentially log mode. They contain all the data on the color science used to capture the footage. And this is what you want. You need to put Resolve into color managed mode. Check this video as it will have some info on that: ua-cam.com/video/9rpAgd8KgCM/v-deo.htmlsi=RieS2nmIRVHi8Psh
