Leave us a message (www.buzzsprout.com/twilio/text_messages/2375248/open_sms) Fear is a complex problem. It has multiple causes, can be easily "installed" and is notoriously difficult to resolve. It can regress without warning even after extensive work and may never be fully "fixed". In the past the training environment hasn't always done what is best for fearful dogs. But there is hope both fo...

Great podcast, thank you. I met a man out walking one day, we both had dogs and his was sniffing away as they all do. The man said to me… ‘ I don’t mind, after all, it’s his walk not mine ‘. What a wonderful thing to say. 💕🐾🐾

Really helpful, thank you. Our latest rescue dog was terrified of going in the car. I happened to take her to a local National Trust park one day for her first long walk (not lead or harness trained when we first adopted her so it was a few weeks before we could do that) and she absolutely loved the park walk. She was never in the least bit worried again about going in the car, and now 18 months on stops by the car when we pass it on the street. I'm yet to work out the vet fear thing, but as avoids people she doesn't know that may take a bit longer ....

Thank you for this and your podcasts, which I definitely find helpful. I have been following Sophie as we also have a Romanian rescue. Whilst not quite as nervous as Sophie, his history (born and spent most of his first year in a shelter where he saw men kill one of his siblings, a failed adoption and two foster placements before we adopted him) meant he was very anxious at first. He has improved massively but we are still working on his nervousness around my husband and his anxiety when approached by other dogs, particularly those not on a lead where his first instinct is to run away. It is reassuring to know that other adopters have good days and bad days and for your insights into his behaviour.

My Romanian rescue is fine with dogs, on or off the lead. But is absolutely terrified of children, bikes, joggers, scooters, random walkers...even the sound of children's voices is enough to put her into panic mode. We have been changing direction and taking her preferred route (which is usually back home). She literally looks round for her exits. We just go with her flow.

  • @strawberrygirl865

How did you progress from this to making the harness secure on her so it was tight enough? I have spent hundreds on trainers but still haven't got anywhere with going out although my dog is now otherwise v trusting and loves cuddles from people she knows well. I have a Hungarian street rescue and after 2 years still haven't got a lead or harness on! Getting desperate for how to progress!

I don't know if my comment was sent - if so apologies for repeating. We brought an adored dog, Roxy, back to the UK from Cluj Napoca. She lived until the age of 18. She looked almost identical to Sophie, other than having a short tail, and had very similar mannerisms. I'd love to share a photo and some of her characteristics . . .

She lived 17.5years and is the absolute image of Sophie (other than having a short tail) and shared many of her habits and mannerisms. I'd love to share a photo and perhaps some of her progress when she arrived in London . . .

She's so good with it......very brave. Just one suggestion.....can you change the harness for one that sits in a v-shape on her chest rather than straight across her chest which will restrict her shoulder movement. It will be far more comfortable and won't cause any damage. Keep up the good work Sophie and humans 👏

I always enjoy the slightly bemused look on dogs' faces during this sort of training, as if they're thinking 'Well, you can keep putting this thing over my head if you want to, but I hope you realise it's really weird behaviour on your part'
