Sulfuric Acid from Copper Sulfate
Today I make Sulfuric Acid from Copper Sulfate!
I use electrolysis to reduce the copper and make the acid.
Reaction:
CuSO4 + H20 + (energy) = H2SO4 + Cu + O2
Note: Be careful with Sulfuric Acid it can and will burn.

    according to applied science a drop of soap will help the bubbles evolve faster. very cool idea. edit: your idea i mean. that copper powder will make a good additive to linseed oil or paint of some sort i'd reckon edit 2: on the electrolysis of water wiki page i saw in the history section that someone reported nitric acid being produced when water was electrolyzed at length do to nitrogen in the atmosphere. I wonder how much of your mixture is nitric or how one would test that

    Welcome new chemtuber!! So simple, I think this beats the burning sulfur route to sulfuric acid just for it's simplicity. Copper sulfate, wack in some electrodes, wait, evaporate, done. Btw if you get a powerful heating mantle or use camping stove to heat a round bottom flask snd perform a distillation, you can clean up your h2so4 by distilling it. Collect the fraction around 337°c as your pure 98°c sulfuric acid. Use sulfuric acid as joint grease and be caeeful your glassware doesn't crack from thermal shock. Ie don't spill water on it when it's 337°c

    Definitely use a stirplate and stir bar on low. So the copper sulfate comes in more contact with your electrodes

    Use a old cell phone charger 5volt 1.5 amp to 2 amp, you could probably even use a old laptop charger 12volt 3 amp, maybe even an old modem power supply. I've plated zinc onto copper from zinc sulfate. I was able to make some really crazy looking zinc crystals.

      Thanks, If I can get a more consistent power supply than I have now I can run my electrolysis much faster. Also the phone charger sounds like a good idea. Thanks for commenting.

    If you add a little sodium hydroxide to your iron contaminated manganese chloride solution to precipitate maybe 2% of your manganese and stirr for a day or so it will pull the iton out of your solution. You can then filter it off, precipitate the rest of the manganese with sodium hydroxide, wash it, and redissolve in hydrochloric acid.

  • @chemicalmaster3267
    @chemicalmaster3267 18 днів тому

    @Tony´s Pastimes You can actually wash the iron chloride contamination from the manganese chloride with acetone. Just treat the manganese chloride with acetone until the washing are no longer yellow.

    The crystals you should have obtained from your initial concentrated solution are potassium sulfate, not calcium chloride. To verify this, filter off the crystals, redissolve them, and test the solution with barium ions.

    Hi the first thing what's the concentration of hcl you use for that experiment,then i have ammonium nitrate from instant cold pack i can use it with sulfuric acid with 30%concentrstion or what

    • @TonysPastimes
      @TonysPastimes Місяць тому

      I'm not sure of the exact concentration of the HCl, it is enough however to fume so I'd guess around 40 ish percent HCl. Also I would caution using ammonium nitrate with sulfuric acid. You can convert the ammonium nitrate into sodium or potassium nitrate and use that with to make nitric acid.

    If u use H2SO4 and Ca nitrate you could get insoluble calcium sulfate and HNO3 You can use HCl to make H2SO4 wirh sulfate salts

      @TonysPastimes this is interesting video i wanted to leave comment for algorithm, if u want to ask something chemistry related feel free to do so And it works that HCl+NaHSO4-->NaCl+H2SO4 But it doesnt resct back if NaCl is solid, and it will be if there is excess HCl bcs NaCl has low solubility in HCl, and you can recycke that HCl It shpuld work with some other sulfates

  • @chemicalmaster3267

    @Tony´s Pastimes There´s also magnesium carbonate present in the insoluble part of the ashes, besides the calcium carbonate. It comes from the thermal decomposition of the chlorophyll. You can separate the calcium from magnesium, if you want, but it can be a bit tricky. One way is to add a saturated solution of calcium hydroxide a.k.a. limewater to the solution of calcium and magnesium chlorides to precipitate magnesium hydroxide while creating more calcium chloride. MgCl2 (aq) + Ca(OH)2 (aq) = Mg(OH)2 (s) + CaCl2 (aq)

    • @TonysPastimes
      @TonysPastimes Місяць тому

      Thanks, I didn't know that I had the magnesium in there. If I ever need high purity CaCl2 I'll try it out. Also thanks for leaving a comment.

    • @TonysPastimes
      @TonysPastimes Місяць тому

      No need to question the ashes. They are courtesy of my wood burning fireplace.

  • @anantakesharipanda4085
    @anantakesharipanda4085 Місяць тому

    Unless you pre-leached your wood ash in water and drained it before reacting it with HCL, then it also contains some amounts of Potassium Hydroxide (KOH) in it, hence you were getting that high pH value. That’s the reason why it was called *potash* in ancient times. Thanks for acknowledging in the end that your CaCl2 has some KCL contamination in it. Had you used dry sea weeds to burn, the Sodium contamination would have been higher.

    • @TonysPastimes
      @TonysPastimes Місяць тому

      I got the high pH value when I was washing the ashes. I washed most of the soluble salts out but I definitely still had some sort of contamination. Also, thank you for commenting! I enjoy replaying to any comments I get.

    Tony what concentration do you estimate the nitric acid to to be?

    • @TonysPastimes
      @TonysPastimes 2 місяці тому

      Its by no means an extremely efficient reaction but if I had to estimate I'd say between twenty and forty percent Nitric acid (by weight) is what your water solution in the bottom vessel will be by the end. Also, thanks for leaving a comment I appreciate it.

    • @jtbmetaldesigns
      @jtbmetaldesigns Місяць тому

      Hey Tony, My Home Depot has 12 % hydrogen peroxide which is far better than water at converting nitrogen dioxide to nitric acid. in fact when I distill red fuming nitric acid I add about 1 or 2 ml of 35% hydrogen peroxide and the acid is water clear even though it’s more than 75%! The peroxide radical really gobbles up nitrogen oxides!

    • @CryptoFrenzyX
      @CryptoFrenzyX Місяць тому

      If u have good bubble trap this can be actaully efficient. 😊

    • @jtbmetaldesigns
      @jtbmetaldesigns 25 днів тому

      @@CryptoFrenzyX A bubble trap can be improvised with a tall graduated cylinder. You just need it hooked up to an empty flask in the event of suck back. Dissolving metal in nitric acid produces a lot of waste NOx and this would be a method to reclaim said gases. If the nitric acid be diluted then a mixture of NO and NO2 will be made and this can be scrubbed with 20% sodium or potassium hydroxide to give mostly nitrite. On the other hand concentrated nitric acid would generate mostly NO2 which can be oxidized with hydrogen peroxide
