Hello Folks! Here's the place for my mountain dulcimer and related videos. Lots of Celtic material and a few other styles I like to play. I hope you will like all of these and "Like" a few in particular!
Two Jigs: Kerfunten & The Black Rogue, on mountain dulcimer
Here are 2 Irish jigs, usually done in the key of D but the dulcimer here is tuned to C (C G c c), for a bit more mellow sound. When it seems to change key (but doesn't really) is where it switches to the second tune, The Black Rogue.
The esteemed O'Neill's Music of Ireland gives many alternate names for the Black Rogue, including: The Black Joke, Michael Molloy's (jig), Johnny McGill's, the mysterious sounding Shandrum Boggoon (a Celtic transliteration?) and my favorite, Sublime Was The Warning!!

Harpeleik Zither Chord Improv
Переглядів 3165 місяців тому
Here is the Harp Zither by itself, just playing with some chord changes put to rhythm, using hammered dulcimer hammers - my own variation on playing this usually strummed instrument from Sweden. The designation on the instrument box itself is "Harpeleik Zither" which translates according to Google as "Harp-play Zither." The label inside the sound hole says "Valsonora Zither." There are eight ch...
Captain O'Kane

Here's an O'Carolan tune, Captain O'Kane, played on bowed psaltery by Gregg Schneeman with me playing chord backup on the Harpeleik Zither ('Harp Zither") - a sort of harp or zither arranged in chords. It's usually strummed but I'm playing here with hammered dulcimer hammers for a lighter sound. This one was made in Sweden and bought at a yard sale with no history attached.
Waltz From Orsa on dulcimer

Here's an interesting, three-part Swedish waltz on mountain dulcimer, learned from concertina player David Paton. It's also on my album Mixed Colors - Art of the Four String Dulcimer, with some rhythm variations. Thanks to Gregg Schneeman for making the video.

The great 1959 instrumental by Santo and Johnny Farina, written with Ann Farina. Used with permission, from my new album, Mixed Colors - Art of the Four String Dulcimer. Dulcimer tuned A-E-A-G, which allows both IV-major (0-6-5-x) and IV-minor (0-6-0-6, or 3-3-3-6) chords. Ray McNamara, drums. AV by Maria Baglien, Studio, Redlands, CA. www.leokretznermusic.com/

RIPPLE
Переглядів 2844 роки тому
My friend Gregg Schneeman suggested doing this classic song, seemingly out of the blue. As it turns out, Ripple was released 50 years ago, November 1970, so we'll celebrate that anniversary. I've sometimes wondered why it isn't called 'Ripples,' plural, as in the lyrics, but far be it from us to mess around with it after fifty years! Dulcimer tuned D-G-D-D (bass to treble). mountain dulcimer, b...
O'Carolan's Draught

One of the great pieces by the blind, Irish harpist and composer of the late 17th century, Turlough O'Carolan. Playing with me are Alan Davis, mandolin, and Roy Durnal, bass. Together we play as the Old Grey Cats, and this is one of the first videos we've made public in over 10 years of playing together! Video kindly made by Gregg Schneeman of bowed psaltery fame. www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bn1v....
Wild Horses at Stony Point / Pigtown Fling

Another old favorite I tend to think of as Pigtown Fling when two part and Wild Horses... when the third is added. That may or may not be the general rule, if there is one. Pigtown sounds like a place not big on rules, nor the Wild West! Playing with me are Alan Davis, fiddle/mandolin, and Roy Durnal, bass/bodhran (drum). Incredible! I hope I can find your music to buy.
Beautiful
I heard this song performed by a couple of women at a Filk convention a few years ago and had assumed it was an original song by them. Today I saw it mentioned in a FB thread and when I saw the name "Bold Orion," I thought "could it be???" I am SO happy to have found a recording of this song. It's so beautiful, and perfect for the holidays, especially if you're an amateur astronomer like me. Now I can learn to play it myself!!!
I finally got the full album on a vinyl record! It's incredible.
Wonderful melody 🎶
Absolutely awesome
Beautiful playing. I love the sound of the dulcimer.
Missing were a few os those Irish beauties.
That was awesome! Here's hoping I get this good at some point
Keep coming back to this beautiful performance.
Beautiful playing of tunes I wasn't familiar with. It will be fun to learn these. Thanks!
Great tunes played flawlessly, Hooray Leo!
A super performance on a great underestimated musical instrument, and I like the shirt!
Beautiful!
A really good performance on a beautiful instrument. Now, we could just get you to pick up an autoharp.
Pretty sure #4 was made by Gil Anderson, composer of "Dulcimer Daze." I have one that looks very similar.
Hello. I Have just bought beautifull zither similar to this one. But I need to change the strings. Where I can buy them. Can you help? Thank You Best Agata
You might try calling Schreiber Autoharps. They make custom strings for numerous models of zither-like instruments. Example - I needed strings for a 136 year old autoharp. They had them, in stock.
As already suggested, going through an autoharp maker is a good idea. Both instruments (and zithers generally) include strings far heavier than on the guitar, piano strings essentially. However, how bad are your strings and do they really need changing? The strings on mine are very old looking but tuned up quite well. Zither strings don't age nearly as much as on instruments like guitar where the strings are extensively fingered. Changing the strings will be an epic job, perhaps find a luthier or stringed instrument person to help with it! Good luck with your instrument whatever you decide to do! Leo K
❤
What an amazing find at a yard sale! I like your playing it with hammers instead of strumming. It sounds great.
Great!
So good to see you, Leo Kretzner. Completely wore out several copies of your "Bold Orion" album, and also had tapes of several concerts from those 80s Saturday afternoon radio programs. I've kept this one in my singing repertoire since the 1980s, especially from late summer on. Unbelievable song, and people LOVE it! Please send it out to some country hitmakers. It deserves to be known by everybody!

This is absolutely wonderful and with soo much feeling I remember you guys in new england hope you are all doing well
I see your Sunhearth has some rough edges too. Mine gets snagged every now and then. I've smoothed some and tried coating with Elmer's glue. Hurts my heart every time it catches on something. Loving your playing of this.
So great!
Nice strings, nice fiddle, nice bodhrán, in a nice park.
Love this song! you all play so well together and hope you are still playing!!
Very pretty dulcimer! This arteest with Appalachian-underpinnings approves. Keep up the excellent musical work!
Love this and have a technical question - I just read that continents are older than constellations. Could the few words change to reflect this? Thank you for this song!
Enchanting. I’ll have to dust off my telescope! Thanks for posting. Lori
Great playing, Leo!
Thanks for your comments! It's certainly a lovely tune...
Not really sure how it could be improved. Excellent and thank you!
What is the song? Sounds great.
I usually play this on the Uilleann pipes at a faster pace, but I really like this more leisurely pace . . .
This album got me started on dulcimer. My dad took us to the Dulcimer Festival in Glen Rose, TX many, many moons and Orion arcs ago (back in the 80s, lol) and I have loved both this song and dulcimer ever since. I absolutely love sitting with my father and my son and playing together!
Bellissima! Magic Dulcimer!
Knew a guy who hated this tune but as I’ve played it for decades on whistle, I’ve never understood his dislike. Love the dulcimer!
It's the first tune they teach almost everywhere. I think a lot of people just get sick of it.
It’s like when a guitarist is asked to play stairway to heaven or smells like teen spirit
Most delightful
Very pretty. Haven't heard it on dulcimer before. 🙂
❤
Beautiful.
First time I heard this tune was by the Bothy Band. This is the first time I've heard it played on a mountain dulcimer. Very nice.
Yes, but absolutely anything on a mountain dulcimer sounds better.., sorry, it's that simple.
💖🌻
awesome. Damn, I thought you were from Jacksonville Fl, I'm a beginner violin player and I'm looking for a teacher that will teach violin for fun. I want to play jigs and reels, I just love this genre of music
Heel knap gespeeld! Ik wist niet dat dit mogelijk was op een dulcimer. 😀👍🎶
Wonderful Sound and nice technique on the psaltery
Excellant.
I love your treatment of this classic. Thanks for posting it for all of the world to enjoy. (It seems the YT algorithm decided to remind me of times gone by. Like the late '70s and The Ark)
I just stumbled on this - hi Leo! You sound great, as always.
