Outdoors Journeyman

Come with me on an adventure exploring New Zealand's great outdoors, I'll be hunting, fishing, tramping and i'll even throw a little bit of mountain biking into the mix for good measure.
Bush Camping | Campfire Cooking | Nature ASMR
This adventure saw us venturing into the Kaimanawa Ranges, where we were hunting Sika Deer.
This trip was to be a first for us, we were camping out of our truck, it was a luxury trip... we had the camp oven, a gas cooker, chilly bin full of food, beer, comfy seats and warm beds.
There wasn't any deer where we were, well at least we didn't see any... this gave us the opportunity to practice a little camp oven cooking and bush craft.
The relaxed trip has also allowed me to create my first ASMR video!
I hope you enjoy it!

Single shot rifles are not common among deer hunters in New Zealand, and and one chambered in the mighty 45-70 is even rarer!! While on this trip I successfully took a Sika Deer, blooding my rifle and putting food on the table. Link to the video of the hunt...

Stewart Island Kina | New Zealand

A little sample of some of the Kina that I enjoyed while I was on a hunting and fishing trip at North Tikotatahi Bay, Stewart Island, New Zealand.
Haha they're very rare so hang on to it and anyone interested in one don't count on Henry's customer service, trust me it's awful and a waste of time. I recommend TC or CVA that's the direction I'm going with from now on. Not another cent will Henry see from me.
Recently got an H&R handi rifle sb2 frame and plan on getting a few shotgun barrels as well as a .30-30 and .45-70gvt. Love a single shot for hunting
Thanks for the comment, yeah single shots are pretty cool and really handy for hunting Cheers
@@OutdoorsJourneyman no thanks necessary friend. Keep up the content. I’ve slowly migrated to back pack hunting from being interested in and practicing bushcraft for over a decade so backpacking and backpack camping is still new to me. Definitely got a subscription from me!
No stags boy hind slayers
I Seen Your Crocs Mate 😅 Great Video Thanks
Tatonka baby! For the Fatherland, Austria and Germany!
Those who know, know. 😂haha
Nice rifle set up. The blued metal and wooden stock look mint in the bush. I have a bergara single shot in 308 with a red dot I use in the bush. Good luck for the 2023 roar mate.
Thanks mate, yeah when I’m just bush hunting this is my go too. The Bergara would be a nice bush gun too, I almost got one but wanted the 45 Good luck to you for the 2023 roar Cheers
Guinness is the bush is the business 🤙
Yeah mate it sure is! Cheers 🍻
You do a good video bro. I have pretty similar pack contents. I'm going to get me one of those spoons though! I hate getting my dinner all over my fingers while stirring it all up.
Cheers mate, yeah man those spoons are the go 😎
Good video Sir, Just one question, how do you pack the game out with your present system?
Thanks for watching, I usually hang the game and on the final morning bone it out and just carry the meat. It is then packaged up into plastic bags and it loaded into the pack. Sika deer are fairly small and break down considerably and can easily be packed out using this method. Cheers 😎
Good trip by looks, snow rain roaring stags and deer all round, the way we all like it,,
Cheers, it was a great trip with lots of action 😎
Good stuff mate, beauty country in there
Cheers mate, yeah it’s awesome country alright 😎
Hi how much water do you take? Or do you just boil river water to drink and cook?
Hi there, I generally don’t take any water with me, I just get it straight out of the creeks. The water in New Zealand’s back country is usually pretty good, so I don’t actually boil the water for drinking or cooking… The water comes off the mountains and is crystal clear and is beautiful to drink 😎
nice work team, heavy packs and full freezers. good times
Cheers, yeah it was heavy packs, it’s really awesome when it’s full freezers too 😎
Great video and great presentation from your mate that shot the eight pointer as well .
Cheers, yeah he’s not used to being on camera, he done an awesome job 😎
Great trip guys well done
Cheers mate, it was an awesome trip 😎
Been thru this area early 2000's in winter plenty of snow then and Tussock Hut never had a verandah ,thanks for posting this
Hi there , gread vid. Can you tell me what rain gear you are wearing please? stillwater or something else.
Hi there, yeah it’s a Stoney Creek Still Water jacket and the leggings are Stoney Creek Dream Bulls, cheers 😎
nice to see the old hunting grounds again shot my 8 pointer on the ridge behind the tussock hut
There is a predator in New Zealand; her name is Jacinda the Beast.
The Whisky Gods approve this message.
nice one, haven't been there in years ,tussock hut has changed, thanks for the tour
Thanks for that, yeah I tried to show off the hut and it’s surrounding area. It’s a pretty awesome hut, great location too, cheers 😎
Loved this brother. What stunning and amazing places you visit!
Cheers guys, yeah NZ has some awesome places to explore and experience! This is where I’m going to be later this month 😎
Couple of mighty fine looking blokes you've got with you there ;D
What?
Cool trip, we were at tussock late Feb -> early March, saw 22 and shot 4 Deer all over the place!
Cheers mate, I didn’t see much in the open, in the bush we had heaps of encounters though. It’s an awesome valley and I’ll definitely go back there 😎
@@OutdoorsJourneyman what date was your trip?
@@greghughson7450 we were in on the 12th March and arrived at Tussock Hut on the 14th. Was it you guys who left the beers in the hut 😎
@@OutdoorsJourneyman we were Feb 28th to March 5th Dunno my mate did have exports, not sure if he left them? Pretty sure there was another party flown in the day after we flew out.
@@greghughson7450 sweet as, cheers to whoever left the beers, we certainly appreciated it 😎
Hey guys just picking ya brain what block was that we have the Perth river block in the Adams wilderness area on july
Hey there, this was Smyth Hut on the Wanganui River, we hunted up the Smyth, the Evans and the Vane. It boarders the Adams Wilderness area, the Poker Gully block is the block that is the closest to this area. Cheers 😎
Subscribed young fella. An old retired NZFS culler here, now in Queensland. I enjoyed your video a great deal. Oh to have had some of that stuff back in the early 60's!! Never mind. We do what we do. Very interested in your choice of firearm too. I'm a bit of a traditionalist as well, still using a 1970 Carl Gustaf .270, with a X5i Swarovski, the rifle blued and A grade stock. Still looks like new because like you, I take care of it. Good luck and stay safe out there young fella.....
Hey thanks for watching, it’s much appreciated! I bet you guys would loved to have had some of this gear back then. Yes I try and keep my gear in as good a condition as I can, if you look after the gear, it’ll look after you… cheers 😎
Awesome video mate will be refining my pack for the next Mish in there cheers
Glad you liked it mate and hope it helps, cheers 👍
Great video mate, thumbs up,, Tony.
Hey Tony, thanks for that it’s much appreciated, cheers 😎
Really crap woods gun because one feature...extractor and not ejector. Maybe the bear or boar will wait nicely while you go through the 5 step process of shooting again. I blame the boomer brass hounds who never go out into the woods and can't bend down past their beer guts
Nobody said you had to buy one.
If you can’t drop a bear or a boar with a 45-70 single shot Maybe you should buy the lever action and learn how to shoot more accurately
Last time I checked there’s no bear in NZ or AUS
Awesome vid bro. Keep ‘em coming
Cheers mate, it’s much appreciated 👍
I’ve got the same sleeping bag, it’s a MacPac sanctuary 800xp & yeah they are overkill but bloody amazing!
Yeah they are great sleeping bags, way too much for summer… cheers 😎
Hey Mate great to see a Vid like this with all your gear etc. With age brings wisdom ( I hope! ) so weight is a big consideration when packing in somewhere. Well done Bro !!
Cheers mate, haha yeah I remember my first trip in with a 30+ kg pack!! I was much younger and eager back then… I’m trying to cut down on the weight, it does make it easier on the hill 😎
shot bro, 16kg 😳 damn, how many days you in for? ....For a 10day stroll im packn 32kg incl rifle. Probably because I take all my winter kit with me year round just encase, plus rifle is heavy barrel and I bring my foldn camp stove, 5kg of food and a aluminum dutch oven cos make bread in the bush.
Cheers, yeah 16kg is pretty good for me 👍 For my winter hunts I’m a lot heavier, up around the 22-24kg mark… Damn you take in a Dutch Oven! That loaf of bread would be oh so nice 😎
gotta take the dutchy, only small but weighs 1.6kg, good for roastn possums aswell and makn bread n butter pudd. Go out fatter than I came in. Keep up the vids, bout time someone did a decent gear dump.
@@escapeartist6546 cheers mate, roast possum sounds interesting… bread and butter pudding sounds awesome 😎
I keep saving tarp… it’s a fly 😜
What kind of fly? Looks lighter than the Tarp I've been dragging around.
When you setup a tarp and its not touching the ground you are flying a tarp. when you setup a tarp shelter and its touching the ground you are pitching a tarp, same as pitching a tent. its still always a tarp, the setup determines whether your flying or pitching it.👍
Great trip. Epic scenery footage!
Cheers man, yeah it’s an awesome spot! Great for both fishing and hunting, and it’s super scenic 😎
👍🏼
👍😎
I ran across one of these at my local gun shop last week and put it on layaway should have it paid out in a couple of weeks , can't wait to add to my collection thanks for posting
Cheers, these are great guns, hope you enjoy it 😎
That’s a nice looking rifle. I’m considering the very similar, Henry 12 gauge rifled slug shotguns. Half of the counties here in NY are shotgun only and that would make a nice deer shotgun. I have a Henry 45-70 blue steel lever action and it’s a great rifle.
Thanks for that, the shotgun would be a great shooter. I do like the Henry lever action 🤙😎
Great vid mate 🤙
Was that the Butler Hut? Prick of a place, you had bad luck with the weather so pity you couldn't be dropped up on the tops..
Nah mate it was the Smyth Hut, yeah totally lucked out with the weather. Tahr were there but we just couldn’t get across the river… If I go back there I’d definitely get dropped off on the tops 🤙😎
@@OutdoorsJourneyman If you go for a West Coast Tahr hunt you got to take 10 days and be prepared to sit in the Whataroa Pub playing pool for 6 days for the weather to clear. As someone that has has my ass kicked by the weather (in a small tent) on the West Coast, more than once, that is what I do now. You only need 2-3 days of fine weather once you are in a good area.
love it bro , do broadcast from the longdrop next trip .
Haha that would be a laugh eh 🤙😎
gd on ya bro venison is venison hinds are better eating. i know alot of trophy hunters disagree but once ya got a decent head why not got out after the better eaters.
Cheers bro, yeah always after a good head but always keen to haul out as much venison as we can 🤙😎
Nice one. I also have a Henry single shot. It's .44 mag. Hand loading 300gr Hornady xtp. Hammer on bush deer and everything you said about handy.
Cheers mate, I almost brought one in 44mag... great guns and very handy 😎
I have one in 357 and love it great gun
Appreciate the review mate good on ya. Been looking at these. Cheers ay.
Cheers mate, they are great little bush guns 🤙
You’ll never get the stag if you keep shooting hinds. Enjoyed your video though
Yeah true but they are hunting and venny tastes good, i just spent 6 weeks sika hunting and nailed a 7 and an 8 but if i had the opportunity to nail meat animals i would have taken it. It was a crap roar in my experience stags not very vocal at all in various spots over 6 weeks from 4 April until 15 May
Scope?
Leupold FXII 2.5x20 Ultralight
@@OutdoorsJourneyman I couldn't think of a better scope for that THUMPER! I've been looking at these for a little bit... I'd like either the 45-70 or the 350 Legend. I have a bolt action 350 Legend and I love it! I'd be getting one in that caliber if it's for my grandsons/granddaughters. Quick lightweight points fast and knocks the snot outta game especially inside 100 yards!
@@blackie1of4 cheers man, yeah this scope rifle combo is awesome! This set up is really quick and easy in the bush, it is a real hammer on game 👍
I like your videos 📹🤙. Some good info
Cheers man 😎
Nice one mate! What camera are you using? Great quality footage!
Cheers mate, I’m using a couple of cameras, I’ve got a Canon M50, a GoPro Hero 7 Black, GoPro Session 5 and my iPhone 8 😎
Enjoyed going on the hunt with you
Cheers mate, glad you could come along for the ride 🤙😎
