Land Surveying - Searching for Monuments in the Oregon Coast Range.
Переглядів 6623 роки тому
This video is a basic idea of how to search for monuments. Pistols were required by the client for protection from a wild animal identified on the property - hazards in surveying. Firearms are a tool just like our machetes and can be very dangerous. Never carry a firearm (or any dangerous tool) without proper training.

May I ask why you stopped using bladder packs?
Did you ever make that video?
wow. so smart
Wax melts at about 100deg, so it's a good idea to melt it in a double boiler, not putting a candle in a pot and putting that on the stove. I assume you did the former but didn't mention it.
I can't wait to do this
Great idea, made a bunch of these for my next hike. Burn time was over 6 minutes with a good high flame. Would have been longer if I had used more was but wanted to keep them light. Suggestion to people to use non-scented wax if you backpack with them in bear country.
Very helpful for preparing our hiking packs. Thank you!
Glad it was helpful!
Lint + melted candle. Saved 5 minutes
I swear, bush axes are way better for cutting.
Here in the PNW among all the surveyors I have met, machetes are the chopper of choice, especially given how many blackberries we have to chop through. You can find cars , trailers, and entire houses under blackberry patches. I know I have.
I learned everything i needed by fast forwarding thru the vid.
Keen wah 😂
Great idea! I sell fragrant candles and I want to use my extra samples as fire starters. Did you put charcoal in your fire box after it was lit or was it all the starter and scraps? I am a camper and love to bbq.
I use these for campfires mostly, so kindling goes on top. If I use them for a BBQ, I just put the charcoal on top. I would be careful using scented wax for food as it will get the scent into the food. Also, any scent chemicals will get into your food.
Don't melt the tote bro!
That's a cool hammock. What type is it and where can I get one?
This is a Warbonnet Blackbird. Warbonnet makes excellent hammocks.
that's not how I do it
Good! That presents rope management diversity to the outdoors.
Thanks for sharing! I’m going to carry some of this stuff from now on.
My dad would have me help him make these every year before the summer to get ready for camping trips. It has been a staple in my childhood. He passed away 15 years ago, and I still make these before the summer so I have them for our camping trips. Great job explaining how to do this and reminding people of scent-free. Thank you for sharing this easy way for others to do this fire starter trick
I am sorry about your dads passing. Now that my kids are older, I ask them to make these for me for gifts (tradition passed on).
Awesome video
Thank you.
I rip it open to separate a few lint fibers to get it lit easily.
That is a good idea.
Do you have a video that lists what you carry for first aid
Unfortunately I have not made a video on this topic yet. There are many schools of thought on these as well. Some would argue an IFAK (individual first aid kit) should not only carry things for bumps, bites, bruises, scrapes, and cuts, but also items for life threatening trauma like a tourniquet. I typically always carry stuff for the non-life threatening issues. Various bandaids, hydrocortisone to fight infection, tweezers, allergy pills, Tea Tree soap, and alcohol wipe. When making an IFAK, be sure to not get cheap junk. You don’t want things like a tourniquet that breaks when put to use because it was cheap. Lastly, you don’t want to skip over first aid skills needed. Knowing how to make a splint from a shirt and two sticks or how to deal with a finger half severed by an axe, etc. is important. Hope that at least helps some.
Thanks a bunch. What do you use your maxpedition bag for? I wasn’t clear on that.
This is a Every Day Carry (EDC) bag. It goes with me In whatever bag I carry that day. If I go for a walk, it goes with me. It is always with me. I list all the items in this bag in the description. The EDC is on the video at 12:18 minutes. I am working on a video of just the EDC bag. You could view it as a micro survival bag.
@@heathmcconnell yes. I’m sorry. After I sent you the message I saw the listing. Thanks a bunch.
@@heathmcconnell what do you use for your emergency blanket in that kit?
OUTSTANDING ❗️ I was looking for a fire starter 🔥 " with saw dust " and yours came out , THIS IS BRILLIANT THANK YOU !!
I've Been using the toilet roll tubes With lint and paraffin wax cut to small size I get a 15 - 20 minutes burn time
I've been doing this for 20 years. The best by far. I can start a fire for the back yard rink in -30 on to6 of snow.
These work great. Used them in the rain to start a fire when I was drunk before. The more the better, beer and fire starters 😂
Exactly what I was looking for when I start car camping.
Thanks I had heard so much about this pack I found one ( NOS) on eBay . I am a new hiker at 60! So I was never comfortable with a water bladder . Glad to see it’s not a “ must have” I’d prefer a water bottle too. Beyond that I didn’t understand what all the loops pockets etc were for . (Except that handy helmet thing on back )
There is a hoop with plastic tube on it at the bottom of pack for attaching collapsed walking sticks.
Can you just soak the lint in the wax or do you have to pour it over and make a mess?
Soaking would work just fine!
Whats the gun for?
Sasquatch
Boy Scouts taught my brother’s this and I have to tell you, it works great
Would you recommend the Osprey Talon over the Osprey Escapist 25? Does the Talon have an adjustable harness length as the escapist has?
I am unfamiliar with these models.
I use all my kids broken crayons that I add to the wax, I don't really care about the smell or anything since I mostly use it when we go camping and the smell burns off pretty quick
You know what I do soak the lint in a flammable liquid then once that soaked that stuff up you coat the outside in wax
Many ways to skin a cat, as the saying goes. And just to make it clear…I have never skinned a cat.
Hot wax IS a flammable liquid lol. Only relevent difference is that one is a solid at room temperature and most flammable liquids arent.
This will be such a good way to recycle my lint and my left over candle was bits!
Made some yesterday. Burn time of 12 mins each. Total of 12 so over 2 hours burn time. Brilliant, easy to make also. Thanks for the video
ive made these but I don't use that much wax. The cups don't need to be filled to work.
I fill the egg carton to the brim with lint and wax because I want long burn times. Personal preference.
That's it? What about the fire?
Oh, good idea to add a nice campfire at the end. However, I leave that part up to the watcher. My video is on how to make the starters. 😉
unscented laundry.. yea, who wants to smell good.
Not sure I understand. We use no fragrance in any of our healthy laundry soap. Fragrances are essentially toxic chemicals.
Why did you swap from a bladder to a bottle?
Bladders take to much work to keep clean.
Please, I’m not Criticizing but, one of the reasons you may have low ratings is because you didn’t Illustrate that, the very egg carton you filled with lint and wax wasn’t tested as to whether it would start and how much heat it would take to start burning 🔥 Could it be used for survival in wet conditions or what ever the Occasion maybe👍👍
I was going to say the same thing. 1+
Interesting, yet that wasn’t anything I cared about. I have used these lint balls for decades, and living in the wet Pacific Northwest, they have never failed me.
Ive used these to start fires. The carton itself will burn. Not sure if the foam based egg cartons work as well.

These work great, I've been using these for over 30years, waterproof as well.

Do you put your chickens in your dryer, too? Boy, your dryer lint sure don't look like mine!
Old down blankets cause that. It still acts as a wick. :)
I have been making those same fiirestarters for way over 25 years .
Ya, they are GREAT!
Brilliant!! Thank you for this genius video!
Thank you!
"yerba mate" ! Grettings from Argentina !
Greetings from the bush!
I was thinking about using krisko instead
You could, and it may work! It is a petroleum product after all.
What is Krisco? Never heard of it. A Google search turned up nothing. Did you mean Crisco shortening?
@@heathmcconnell What is Krisco? Did you mean Crisco? That's made for people to eat, so it doesn't contain petroleum products. It's cottonseed oil.
You are great
Thanks for this great content. New sub from France.
Thanks. Working on more content.
Nice one Cool Dude. I am thinking about getting the Talon 22 for day hikes, glad to hear you like it. Stay cool.
It is still my favorite.
Put the saw dust in the wax first then put it in the lid
Good idea!
