Diamond Head Crater Hike: Honolulu Hawaii
Hiking the Diamond Head Crater trail in Honolulu, Hawaii, is a popular and rewarding experience, offering breathtaking views of Waikiki and the surrounding coastline. To make the most of your hike, here are some best practices and important details to consider:
Entry Fee and Park Hours
There is a small fee to enter the park: $10 per vehicle or $5 per pedestrian. Payment can be made by card only (no cash), and it's recommended to book a reservation in advance online, as the park can get quite busy, especially during peak tourist seasons. Diamond Head State Monument is open daily from 6:00 AM to 4:00 PM, with the last entrance at 4:00 PM and gates closing at 6:00 PM. Arriving early not only helps you avoid the crowds but also allows you to hike during the cooler parts of the day.
What to Bring
Water: The trail can get quite hot and dry, especially midday. Bring plenty of water to stay hydrated.
Comfortable Footwear: The path is well-maintained, but it includes uneven surfaces, steep stairs, and tunnels. Sturdy shoes with good grip are essential.
Sun Protection: There is limited shade on the trail. Bring sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from the sun.
Camera: The summit offers stunning panoramic views, so don’t forget your camera or smartphone for photos.
Light Snacks: While the trail is relatively short (about 0.8 miles one way), you may want to carry a light snack, especially if you're hiking in the heat.
Trail Tips
The hike itself is moderately challenging. It starts with a paved path, transitioning to switchbacks and culminating in a set of steep stairs (99 steps at one point). Take your time and pace yourself, especially if you're not used to hiking in warmer climates. There are railings on the steep sections to help with balance. The summit can get crowded, but the views of Honolulu and the Pacific Ocean are well worth the effort. Plan for about 1.5 to 2 hours for the hike, depending on your pace and how long you linger at the top.
By planning ahead and following these tips, you’ll have a safe and enjoyable hike at Diamond Head.

Fantastic achivement! Stunning views as well.
Sailing in December & hoping it’ll feel festive with lovely decor. I’d love some information about what clothes to pack 🙏 It’ll be cooler so we’ll need warmer clothes but how casual is acceptable?
You’ve made an informative video which is appreciated a lot! Your shoes/flip flops - though are a little distracting as you walk… slap, slap, slap… 😂
This is one of the best ship tours I've seen. Thanks for taking the time to go into such detail.
Great video, really informative 😊
It’s a ship.
Thanks for the lovely and informative tour. Please in future can you refer to the “boat” as a “ship”, for that is what it is.
