Spirit of Shankly
United Kingdom
Приєднався 19 кві 2024
Spirit Of Shankly (SOS) is the official supporters' union and leader of the supporters board for fans of Liverpool F.C. Named after former Liverpool manager Bill Shankly, the union was formed in early 2008 by disgruntled fans opposed to the former Liverpool FC ownership of Tom Hicks and George Gillett, quickly developing into a cooperative representing its members (and by implication other Liverpool FC supporters) on a whole range of issues such as ticketing, travel and community and regeneration issues.
Why the Kop is a cultural asset and MUST be protected
Gareth Roberts from Spirit of Shankly was once again a guest on The Overlap and spoke about why the Kop is a cultural asset and must be protected, along with other iconic home ends in football. He also touches upon why the Bayer Leverkusen model is one which should be the model for English football.

The Cost of Football: Kieran Maguire on the rise of ticket prices at Liverpool
Out of control? Are you people high? The people who buy the tickets have the control over how much they will cost. If the club charges to much then don’t buy it. Don’t sit and bitch and whine about it. Seriously these 2st century people. I’m amazed this earth is still spinning
If we keep paying average players over million a year and the best up 24 million what do we expect. I would love to go and see Arsenal at home but to take my daughters and me at 160 quid a ticket I would have to pay 480 plus travel plus food. I could afford it but don’t think I shoukd pay that amount for 90 minutes entertainment. Bit my bit they will milk us dry to pay more and more ridiculous wages to players.
Get innnnn Robbo ☘️👍👍👍
If Liverpool, as Gareth Roberts suggests, follow the Leverkusen model and reduce season ticket prices to £174 for Adults and £88 for kids and £13 for a single game, we would not be able to afford to pay the wages demanded by the players. We would then end up mid-table and would be watching poor quality football.
I stopped going after nearly getting unlawfully killed going de game 1989 , then having to stomach the theft of our heritage in the name of safety, kept me season ticket as long as I could, wrung a pint of rain out of me bills after watching us get beat 0 - 1 by Wimbledon when the Kop roof was getting built, then went to do a 12 hour night shift, watch where I can now, couldn't even dream of getting to a game these days, born Toxteth 1960, seeing the Kemlyn (Kenny) full of corporate freebie hangers on is truly sickening, the money grabbers will give it legs if we could ever get back to heritage lead support, being a tourist destination is fine, but visitors should please understand that being willing to pay exorbitant prices to go to Anfield is slowly killing the very fabric of the greatest support in football history.

Lol if only you cared so much about your nation as you do a sports stadium tradition 😊
Nationalism is for weirdos
That’s by design, subversion from the small hats.
@ this guy gets it
Walk around Anfield on a match day and you’re not gonna hear many Scouse accents. Global club fair enough but the locals are priced out.
Spirit of Shankly do a fantastic job speaking up for the fans but I do think the club should be prioritising the local fan base who can't get to many (if any) matches nowadays. I went home and away regularly from 1984 onwards but I don't even try to get a ticket nowadays because it is a minefield trying to get hold of a ticket for any game. As for tickets for away games, you have more chance of finding Shergar or Lord Lucan. More tickets for locals and young fans from the city please !!!!
I agree on ticket prices. But the issue isnt not clubs ripping people off. Its the fact cost in football are running wild! Wages and transfer fees are growing at a faster rate than income. Also i know fans from all over the world just as passionate... The idea only passion comes from fans who are local isnt true. Untill footballer wages and fee are controlled nothing will change
Says a man who clearly doesn’t support his local club. The usual tripe about non locals are just as passionate blah blah. They’d abandon ship if LFC got bounced to the lower divisions.
Higher prices attract tourists, Tourists expect the be entertained and want value for money. Supporters don’t, they go to back and get behind their team.
Need to make Kop steeper and bigger
Cheaper tickets is what's needed for atmosphere simple as. Kids tickets should never cost more than 50% of adults price, and family tickets should be an option. The restrictions on alcohol in the seats should be removed, as it's BS. local only is utter bollocks. As the song says "we don't care what your name is boy, we'll never turn you away"
How do you get tickets? I just see fans selling their season tickets for profit as well. Selling £60 tickets for £180 and even more for bigger games. This needs to be addressed as well.
UCL and EPL trophies for lfc will fail again this season mark my words, the aura of bottling has begun to be felt
Thanks Gareth and Kieran for being the voices of we fans who are otherwise easy to ignore. I've been a Red forever and a member for decades - the latter mainly so I get the chance of going to games. As a 70 year old woman I'm happy to go on my own because at Anfield I'm with thousands of mates. And when I'm there you can be sure I'm singing and shouting with the best of them and wouldn't dream of missing even a minute of the game. In the last couple of decades it was always hard to get tickets - my best season I went to five matches but more often only one or two. I thought with the new stand and the new ticket ballot system it would improve but it's the opposite. Last season I went to just one match (Newcastle - winning goal in ET added on by ref due to Newcastle time wasting throughout the game😂- I ended up sharing crazy hugs with a complete stranger). This year no tickets in the ballots at all. It's so upsetting and I feel like I'm being taken for a mug - which I probably am. Why pay for membership next year? Because without it I have no chance (I won't pay Hospitality). So it's our hope they're exploiting, as well as those 'fortunate' fans who manage to get exorbitantly priced tickets to games. Let's hope the current fans' movement will succeed in saving the game before it's too late.
I would love clubs to not increase tickets, however the point is flawed. Yes record breaking revenue but failed to mention lossing money. The actual facts are 19 out of 20 clubs made a loss. Its not the club thats the problem, its the rising player wages and transfer fees are rising at a much higher rate than income. Until this is dealt with, nothing will change.
I watch everything involving Gareth Roberts. He's a top man, and understands what makes football clubs great - passionate fans. Let's keep this ball rolling. Clubs like Liverpool and Man U could let kids on for free as most of their income comes from commercial activities. Wouldn't it be nice if just one of the top clubs made a gesture at least to local fans. It could be that every Boxing Day if you go to a local school you get on for free. If you miss out one year, it's your turn the next. Some kind of a concession that shows you care couldn't do any harm. This is not impossible, we are not demanding Utopia.
And yet the club will make a loss for last season. The rediculous player wages and agent fees take all the money. Football needs a wage cap
A major reason why tickets are so expensive and the answer to where does all the money go from the TV deals is on the rediculous player wages and agent fees in millions. Most clubs are making a LOSS even premier league one like lfc they will post a loss soon on their books for last year 2023/2024. players on 2, 3, 400 000 a week are taking all the money. Football needs wage caps. Edited spelling.
All about the money..They want day trippers going the club shop spending money. They spend £300 plus a ticket and don't know any songs and are happy sat there taking pictures of players taking pens and corners
Romantic idea, but the players want hundreds of thousands of pounds per week plus bonuses. Flak is fired at the owners and not the players. It's the players who are forcing the owners to up the ticket prices with their wage demands.
Well in Robbo.

Q. Why is almost a third of the extended Anfield Road and other stand seats being sold for around £270-720, those seats could go to real fans and fans who have waited over 20 years for a season ticket A. Greed
There are package seats at the front of the Kenny near the Kop, £600 for a look at the European cups a can of Fanta and a sausage roll. Chinese phone watch fans lap it up.
Carra is a Sky Man. Matt Le tisier says it all. To many podcasters kissing FSG arses
I go to Anfield to every home game! I’m a priority ticket holder and try to get seats in the Kop whenever I can, but I must say sometimes the atmosphere is better elsewhere in the ground! Some Koppites have become lazy! Look around an you will see more scarfs aloft in Annie Road/ Sir Kenny’s than the Kop. Kopites blame a dull atmosphere on too many corporate seating!! It’s entirely up to us regulars to create the atmosphere and not blame corporate seating! For us to compete globally we need the revenue of corporate tickets as well as local support!
I was there, off camera- They edited out Paul Scholes smoking at least 5 cigarettes in the 6 1/2 minutes seen here
He’s an asthmatic so you’re talking out of your hat there.
Get innnnnnnnnnnn Robbo ❤❤❤
It should be listed as a monument.
When big money enters ,the character changes, thankyou spirit of shankly for standing up for the fans
Is part of the problem players, staff etc are paid far too much? A wage cap could be explored. Surely the easiest way to reduce costs and overheads for a club is to pay less for players, both transfers and wages?
Not at utd anymore 😂😂😂
Don’t let them turn English football into the NFL. Working class got completely priced out in the late 1980’s. Come the 2000’s the atmosphere lost all passion. To the point where the have to pipe loud music during the game to try to hype fans up. It’s synthetic.
Protect the name, rebuild the stand. It's too small, I'm near 6ft at my knees are almost against the back of the person in front of me and it's a nightmare when i go with my son/ son in law who are over 6ft. Awful seating.
I'm 6,2ft and had to move to the upper main stand as my knees were in agony
@kebabremover6024 too many seats for the footprint of the stand, would be better with safe standing as I think the cost of the rebuild would be much higher than the main strand, what with having to move the road behind the Kop as well.
I think the biggest problem Liverpool have out grown anfield. If you made the tickets cheaper it would be still be impossible to get a ticket if not worse . Larger stadium would be the chance to see more fans and them to consider general ticket price especially in parts of the ground. Dortmund 81,365 Bayern 75,024.
it wouldn't be Anfield..?
Not really. The money men will not drop the prices even if the clubs have 100 k seats
An interesting but sad discussion - owners simply don't care.
but nor do the middle-to business class fans, who are now ticket holders
👏👏👏
Who do yous think you are 80 % of sos are all old wools ! Yous Don’t care about the inner city scousers . Yous only care about if your own season ticket will go up
Whenever i speak to someone about German clubs spending less and playing better And why Englisch clubs are paying average players lot of money and the results are worse... Someone just attack me and defend the pl and the owners The same people who moan about the prices defend the owners
Blinkered. 70% of LFC cost base is player wages. One side of the Kop is holding up a banner saying 'stop exploiting loyalty' - the other side is saying 'Pay Mo what he wants'. Thick as mince. Football is tri-income model. Matchday, commercial and broadcasting. There is no real profit in football. Its a vocation. Its retail. Owners shift 'brand equity' at the end of their tenures - providing the club has been successful enough on the field to grow brand equity. The Anny Road has been a great place to sit this season. The atmosphere has matched the kop. The Kop for most of this season in lesser games has been a library. Hospitality in the Anny Road is not 'corporate' - its mostly famailies who cannot get standard tickets and happy to bring their revenue to Liverpool for a weekend. Anyone from SoS who needs schooling on the business of LFC or general football - please shout out.
Ps I’ve subscribed
the old kop was an awe inspiring heartbeat and aesthetically, (and I’ve had a season ticket in it since it was a terrace nearly 40 year kop season ticket holder so I’m the only person who’s had this seat) this kop isn’t great it never has been as a stand it was a quick fix the best thing when it was first built was the fact it had McDonald’s in it. It’s now a very underwhelming stand to look at (and I’m not talking about the fans, you now walk out from let’s say the anfield road stand and look at a kop half the size of the anfield road stand, it needs knocking down and rebuilding and I know the transport issues and being hemmed in by Walton breck road but it’s the most famous stand in the world and deserves to be more than the average build it is. I remember in the old days when it was a terrace and they called for flag days they would throw up thousands of flyers in the kop telling everyone to bring flags for the next game, I was so sad I used to stick them on my car back window lol. I love the kop my first season ticket was and I can’t guarantee I’m guessing right but around £80, I love anfield and never want to move from it but if I had one wish from it it would be a bigger better kop this one isn’t in the same league as the old terrace and now it’s the smallest visually in the ground it’s underwhelming which is the one thing it shouldn’t be. I remember the first time I went I sat in the main stand nearer the annie road end and I watched the old kop sway and bounce and knew straight away that’s where I wanted to be, and still remember my favourite ever game at anfield which was ironically the smallest crowd I’ve been in at anfield 23,000 against auxerre, my cousins who were spurs fans come to the game with me, the kop was the only stand that was full and a swear that night we scared the opposition so much they shit themselves, my cousins said they and have and still haven’t ever witnessed anything like that at a football match. In summary I love the kop and it always needs to be there but this kop needs to be rebuilt.
Ricky, The old Kop was a breeding ground for thieves & thugs which hasn’t changed today. Walk on, walk on to the nearest house, with hammer & chisel in your hand, you will never rob alone 😂
I was in the Kop that night against Auxerre, massive flag near the front it was relatively empty, freezing cold night. Was it Mike marsh and Mark Walters who scored the goals?i still have it on vhs me and my mates at the front going mad. Great noise great atmosphere, I was horse for days afterwards but in such a high. Knocked out by Genoa in the next round never mind!
@ absolutely brilliant night my favourite yep Mike marsh scored I think he played at right back that night and mark Walter’s got the winner, I was on the kop for the Genoa game as well I honestly thought the Genoa fans were one of the best set of away fans I’ve seen at anfield.
Watch the atmosphere on the Kop on Saturday against Accrington Stanley , it’ll be very local and vocal as loads of dads are getting too take there kids/ nephews etc . These games we can get our kids into , I’m 50 now and I’m made up I went from 82 onwards with my grandad . It was completely different beast then Anfield in so many ways , not all good for the modern football fan granted . But the passion you get today comes from them kids who went in the early to late 80s and got learnt the education and passion of standing on the Kop and learning from the fellas who’d grown up on there in the 70s ( and the anny rd as well ). We’re a minority now but we’re a very vocal , local and passionate minority. Gareth as usual nails it , well done mate .
@@ste2442 I love to read this sort of stuff. I am a Liverpool fan but not for the city, however I think the club cannot or shouldn’t price out locals as they are the heart of the club, it’s disgusting to hear and read that it is happening but that whole debate highlighted the greed of these owners and how the do not give a two hoots about fans
Absolutely can’t wait.
Quiet and crap as per. It’s actually embarrassing for a club that gave so much to supporter culture to have a stadium with a morgue atmosphere.
@@LHBH8 it’s Sunday morning , can’t you find something decent to say ? Your comments on this page are pathetic as well , usually in block 305 me . Come and have a debrief next time you’re at the match . Guinness machine at half time .
i have seen on the likes of sky sports, the pundits waxing lyrics about the passion and roar of Anfield, especially on European nights. They need to keep that, its like an extra man on the pitch. It fuels the confidence of the players. anyone knows that a confident player can produce so much more.
and what are you DOING for that?
Supporting the cause like a supporter should.
Why Carra is everywhere . He doesn’t represent Liverpool
He’s a football pundit
Durrrrrrr
Gareth is spot on the whole debate on this was superb
Did Gareth talk about flags and banners ? Wasn't he part of the self appointed fans Police who sabotaged our chances of a historic European final in Dublin with their unofficial self imposed ban banners and Flags for a European quarter final. Complete phoney like his organisation. Let's remember SOS Sat in on the meeting when fsg proposed the £70 ticket and never objected ,they jumped on the bandwagon after the fans objected. Frauds
