Sailing Elleray
Приєднався 28 жов 2021
Welcome to Sailing Elleray! We originally started this channel to share with like-minded people, our experiences on our Cavalier 28 Sailboat. We loved Elleray but after two years, we decided to carry on our adventures on Elleray II, a beautiful Northshore 340. We'll continue to explore Sydney Harbour and nearby regions in beautiful New South Wales Australia. We'll also continue to review and test equipment that we purchase for and use on our boat from a real-world perspective. We don’t profess to be great sailors but we’ll give you our honest perspective. We hope you enjoy what you see and we'd love you to join the Elleray community by subscribing. Thanks! Tony, Fiona & Arabella.

Watersnake Venom after a year of regular use. How is it holding up?
Oh no what a b......d! How did you manage to get someone to look at it so fast. I have been trying to get a rigger in Sydney since January and it may happen next week. All the best for a quick fix.
Hope all goes well Tony and looking forward to see the fix.
Thank you! At the shipwrights as we speak.
I meant to ask Rob, have you bought a boat yet? You'll have to come out for a sail again when you have time.
Exciting! Looking forward to the solution. (Sailor from Sweden) 🇸🇪
Thanks for watching from Sweden! I'm not sure whether I'll be able to film any of the fix but I'll certainly document it in an upcoming video. All the best, Tony.
CON: Its slow and terrible at its intended purpose. Hope you dont need to go far or get there anytime soon.
@@SOLDOZER thanks for sharing your personal experience with this motor. Other viewers are always interested in hearing about the personal experiences of others. Thanks for watching!
I bought one. Was great until the day the throttle stopped working. Three months later it is still not repaired although under warranty. Just sitting in Athens waiting for the small control unit along with 25 others waiting for the same part. Works great until it doesn’t.
Very disappointing! That's a crazy wait time for a part that, by the sounds of it, is a common problem. How old was yours when it stopped?
The biggest con is that its terrible at its intended purpose. Its SLOOOOW and cost twice the amount of a equal gas engine.
@@SOLDOZER so you’re not happy with yours?
I have an EVO and have had issues sorted under warranty
@@home.port-Sydney I hope it’s all sorted now. It’s frustrating when things don’t go as planned.
@@sailingelleray it arrived without a propeller and the watch was not charging and the battery went flat 4 weeks after full charge removed.
Its this good enough to move my 26 foot saiboat?
@@bryllupsfotofilm it’s very torquey but I think a bigger motor would be more suitable. Thanks for watching!
it's good for what it does. if you expect to cruise around full throttle all the time, then they definitely aren't for you.
@@JohnBraman413 I think that’s true and also true of all motors. Thanks for watching!
I have been looking at a pod Navy 6 on the yacht to replace the diesel. I have discovered that if left in the water full time their longevity is not so good. I will stick to the old diesel and focus on sailing. Thanks for a great video and rundown after a solid experience using it.
Cheers Phil! Given the costs involved, if the Bukh still has life in it, why not keep it.
Great video, Tony. I am not surprised that it is a conversation starter. I would definitely be interested in trying out the propulsion motor. I am using a trolling motor or 2.5hp 2 stroke for my inflatable dinghy, but neither of them are ideal.
Thanks a bunch! I'm not sure if there is such thing as a perfect power source but when we finally catch up, you're more than welcome to take the Epropulsion out for a test run.
I used to, like the prev. owner, take the halyard shackle to the end of the boom. A much better solution, if you already have a topping lift (the previous owner did not), is attaching it to the spinnaker pole ring in front of the mast. Less walking on the deck...
@@Makraska do you get the halyard mast-slapping at night?

A couple of quick questions if possible. Firstly the trim ? Can it be set as free IE: stump jump ? Also i noted that you mentioned the tiller is a bit long. How do you find it being in the center v an outboard which is to one side. Hence it would be in the middle of your back. Is this a pain in the ass ? and also propeller protection. Would you think this would be a problem on inland rivers with the usual underwater logs ect. Cheers Hunty
Hi Hunty, Thanks for your questions. 1. Stump jump? No. It's either up or it's down and both are locked. I'm in the process of editing a 12 month review on the motor and I mention this very problem. 2. Centre tiller. In my application, I have to sit off-centre in the dinghy to successfully use the motor (clearly not great for balance in a 2.5m tinny). I often find myself sitting forward on the rear seat with my arm tucked behind my back which works okay. Overall, unless you're in an inflatable and sitting on one of the pontoons, I think the centre tiller is a PITA and a weak spot of most electric motors I have seen (including my Epropulsion and my previous Watersnake). 3. Prop protection. Although the prop is HUGE for the horsepower, the skeg projects below the prop and does provide a good amount of protection. After 12 months usage, the prop has very little damage. All the best, Tony.
Rivers have current. If the current is going the opposite way, you will always be going backwards this this is so slow.
@@SOLDOZER top speed is not a strong point but torque is.
A little off topic, but how do you find the cabin layout of the Northshore now that you've lived with it for a while? It looks like a far superior layout compared to "traditional" designs with the head forward and 7/8 of the cabin dedicated to the saloon. My son crews on a 38, but he's spent no time below other than to retrieve fenders, sails etc. I often find myself dreaming of the 33, although now that you've brought the 340 to my attention...? Thanks for the content.
A question about a 340 is never off topic! Overall I find the open-plan layout far preferable to having several tiny, claustrophobic cabins. Having the head amidships makes sense as it's in the 'working' area of the boat opposite the galley and quite seperate from the relaxing area. It also puts it in an area with full head height so you're not cramped over when showering. It's also handy when single handing as when nature calls, you don't have to go all the way forward. The layout is clever in that you still get seperate and distinct areas of the boat without the need for partitions or enclosed bulkheads. If you are thinking of getting a 330/340, I recommend the 340 as it has far superior fittings and use of space than the 330. I also recommend that you look for a 340 like mine with the companionway in the centre. The last of the Mk1s or the Mk2s have this and it's a much better design than the stb side companionway design. I'm always happy to talk about the boat so if you have any more questions please feel free to post them here or at elleraysailingadventures@gmail.com All the best and thanks a million for watching. Tony.
@@sailingelleray Thanks for taking the time to reply. I'm quite sure that as the owner of a vessel like that you are more than happy to converse! You have confirmed what I believed to be the case. I'm not in the market for a yacht, as I just can't justify it at present, although I've got several people encouraging me to throw caution to the wind. Surprisingly, this includes my wife. Is she trying to tell me something? There's a particularly well cared for example in Newcastle advertised at present. It is the starboard side companionway version, however. These yachts tick so many boxes for a coastal cruiser/bay racer that it's hard to think of a yacht that competes. Once again, thanks for your reply.
Dinghy sailer kept at a lake on a trailer with the mast still up. So I can sail on the lake easy. If I want to travel to a different place once in a while it is not so big a deal.
Thanks for watching! Definitely horses for courses. I think the rise in the popularity of dinghy cruising is because of the ease of movement that you mention. Thanks for joining the discussion!
If you want to convince a hesitant wifey of the joy of sailing, buy a keelboat. The principal exception would be a Nolex 30, for which you'll need to buy a tank to tow it, and good luck rigging and storing it. If you want to scratch the sailing itch, buy an inexpensive sailing dinghy.
Yes, yes and yes! Selling the idea of a porta potti to a pre-teen girl is also never easy...
I nearly went down that path and got talked out of it by experienced yachties. Just too much stuffing around before and after along with no where to store the trailer the need to update to a car type I do not like! Very happy staying in the middle with the good ol Cavalier 28.
Yes the before and after was a huge hassle. I've never regretted going to the keel boat.
I could not agree more with everything you said. I loved my trailer sailer and actually still miss it greatly especially the shallow water ability of a raising keel. However the seaworthiness of a keelboat is hard to beat, but it still takes me over an hour to button up the boat before I leave it.
Hi Graeme, Thanks Graeme! As another convert, I was keen to hear your thoughts. My boat can take longer to pack up (putting covers on etc.) but I can, and have, walked off it in 15 minutes. I miss my old Boomerang 20 though. Lots and lots of fun.
17:21 I found myself clapping too :) great fun.
Thank you!
Great video Tony! Congratulations on hitting 500 subscribers! That is a great milestone. I was considering buying an epropulsion motor until a friend gave me an old trolling motor for my inflatable dinghy. The Epropulsion motor and battery life are pretty impressive. Are you able to charge the propulsion battery on Elleray?
Thanks a million! Hard to believe that 500 people are even remotely interested in what I'm doing. I just love the creative process of making videos and if they can help anyone out then that's a bonus. I was pretty impressed with the battery life as it's actually quite small (about 25ah from memory). It just lasted and lasted! I can charge off my inverter on the boat and it will actually does a reasonable job of restoring charge but for a normal weekend, the battery doesn't need charging.
Thanks mate gives a lot to consider Regarding petrol outboards like the weight for a start. Cheers
Having the ability to split the battery and motor is a bonus I must say. Makes things very manageable. I'm going to do a full 12-month review shortly so please keep a look out for that. Thanks for watching!
Hello. Do you have any information about which shaft type should be preferred for both inflatable boat and fiber boat to be used at the same time? The inflatable boat is 3.80, the fiber boat I will buy in the future will be 4.70. Thank you.
Hi and thanks for your question. Both my inflatable and aluminium dinghies have transoms around 40cm. I bought the short shaft as this is what Epropulsion recommends for 40-50cm transoms. Given that you are going for a 4.70 in the future, this might also be the right shaft length for you too. Mine is probably a little long for my current transoms but I have never experienced any adverse effects. All the best, Tony.
Sydney has been super wet this Autumn and Winter compared to other years along with very high humidity. It has been hard for anything to dry out. Here is my theory from observations on my boat over the last few months. We have had storm after storm with the water going muddy brown from all the run off. The winds have been high and muddy spray has been deposited onto our boats. This contains organic matter and has had little chance to dry. Some of the stuck on dirt would compose of mold that is either active or died out after a growth period and still combined into that inground dirt covering. The plant growing in that little crevasse is some good support for that theory as it indicates a lot of airborne organics over that time period. When I can I get onto a Marina and powerwash the boat with no chemicals at all. This just shows you need to visit your boat more often 😀
That's a sound theory my friend and I've never had a plant growing before so it makes sense. I wholeheartedly agree that life has made me neglect the boat and I need to be there more often!
Great video Tony. Is that boat wash a wash and wax or just boat wash? If i leave my boat on the marina for a few days it is covered in bird droppings so i would hate to think of what it would look like after 6 weeks
Thanks again. The boat wash has no wax in it and it's really low sudsing. I'm pretty happy with the result but if you're after something for tougher stains you may need to look elsewhere. I've been pretty lucky with birds so far and they seem to like other peoples' boats more than mine...
Luxury plus. Fridges eh
How else do you keep the caviar cold?😉
Another great vid. One of my favorite moorings too. Enjoying a morning cuppa only a stone throw away from the rush of commuters - can't beat it. Stroll over to the ocean beach and watch the early morning swimmers going to Shelly beach.
There really is something very satisfying about being on the boat and watching other people go to work...
Beautiful spot!!! Manly is so peaceful. Hopefully i will be out there very soon in the new boat. Great video as always.
Thank you! Have you got the antifouling done?
@sailingelleray The boat went up on the slip this week. I got a few bits and pieces done. It goes back in the morning i hope.
That is our favourite spot in summer. Our daughter works at G&G. We pick her up in the yacht and get burritos. If you are in Sydney they weekend come through the Spit Bridge and jump on my boat for a Sunday Northbridge race. You can even televise it! ⛵
It's a great spot. Will the race go ahead in the forecasted conditions?
Hi Tony, wondering what the outcome was. Did you locate / fix the problem?
The problem was that a corrosion had created a hole in the bottom of the tank so I decided to replace it. The outcome turned out to be favourable although it took LOTS of grubby work and cost around $700 from memory. If you're interested, there's follow-up videos on buying a new tank and then installing it. It taught me a lot and was beneficial to the boat overall. Thanks again for watching, Tony.
This is a great resource for visiting cruisers. Thanks for posting.
Thank you! This was one of my favourite trips and one I've done a few times now under sail the whole way. Being one of my earlier videos, I was trying to get the production right so worked really hard on it but no one watched it... Until now! All the best, Tony.
Thanks for the video. I know you have sold the boat now, but am interested in what you thought about the Cav28, strengths and weaknesses. You spent a bit of money on it. Was it worth it?
Was it worth it? From a business perspective definitely not, but what it did was turn an ageing, unreliable and tricky-to-sail (single-handed) boat into the complete opposite. Strengths and weakness? Solidly built, strong (but not fast) upwind, manageable size for single-handing, predictable handling, stable, seaworthy, decent headroom for a smaller boat. Downsides were: a bit of a tank so not that fast, STEEP ladder, inner-forestay was a nuisance when tacking, original engine was useless (Bukh 1 cylinder 10HP). Overall, once they're sorted, they're a good reliable boat. The design hasn't dated well but they have a cult following and are highly regarded. Thanks for watching!
So, you could live on the water on your comfy boat, in Sydney for less than $10k per year.. Thats pretty cheap living even factoring in the cost of a decent boat. I wonder how long it gets to slide by like that.. being Sydney and all? House repayments + insurance + rates and costs of running all things elec in a house...Boat life is looking more and more affordable by the day.
I hear more and more of young couples buying big cats and living aboard because they can't get a mortgage. I don't know where they park though as they couldn't stay too long legally in any place in NSW...
Looks like you have had a great year of sailing. How does the boat feel to sail compared to the Cavalier 28? Since this is your second home I think you made a great choice. Having the mod cons that are not in a sardine can are very important. I know that if I take a step up I would get a similar boat (at least a Northshore 33). The one thing most cruiser racers cannot deliver is the one design racing the Cavalier 28 has. Have you thought about adding an asymmetrical spinnaker to your sail inventory?
Hi Phil, Yes you're right about the one design thing and I think that if you're racing, one design is the fairest way to compete. There is an annual Northshore Regatta in Lake Macquarie that I might have a look at one year. I think it could be fun. I think I actually have an asymmetrical spinnaker in my garage so I might dig it out and learn to use it one day. I'll get you on the boat to teach me how to use it if you have some time. How does it feel in caparison to the Cav 28? It definitely feels quicker in a straight line and more 'deliberate'. Its extra heft and LOA makes it feel smoother through swell and chop so it feels like a much larger boat. There's way more inertia and I had a few close calls with mooring when I first got it (overrunning buoys etc). What I miss about the Cav is the way that it felt like a big dinghy with its quick response and 'chuckability'. The way that you could flick it this way and that and it would instantly respond. I think I mentioned to you that you need to get a few knots going before you had steerage. It's making me razor sharp with tacking and gybing so that I maintain boat speed. The Cav was more forgiving in that regard. I'm picking up the new auto pilot next weekend that I managed to get at a great end of financial year price. Installation is going to be pricey though...
@@sailingelleray Your also welcome to come in one of the Winter Series races at Northbridge on my boat... there is one this Sunday Pickup at 11am

I’ll probably be sticking with my Mercury 3.3hp outboards as they go forever
I bought a new Mercury 3.5 and it was a complete dud so I'm glad yours is working well. I think I just got a bad one but it put me off them. This thing isn't as fast as the 3.5 I had but it's just as torquey. Only time will tell how it will hold up but so far I'm pretty impressed. Thanks for watching!

It is such a big decision to buy a boat with so many things to contemplate, Thanks for the reflection on your choice and the process. In the end I think you know which is the right one for you, whilst always keeping in mind that there is no such thing as a perfect boat. However, you know when it comes close. Now all there is, is to enjoy it.
Thanks Graeme. Totally agree that there is never a perfect boat and compromise is the order of the day. I watched with interest your change from TS to keel boat as I did the same thing a few years back. The pros and cons...

Looks like you are very happy with your choice a year on. It looks like a great buy with no regrets, just a big smile lasting a year 😀 I am still enjoying the Cav 28 as it includes the class racing aspect. 2 of my friends have now bought them too (one is settling this Friday).
Hi Phil, Yes I still have a big smile! I'm going to do a 12 month look back in June but there's not a lot to say as I haven't done much with this boat apart from enjoy it! There are so many layers to the Cav 28 and in fact it was mentioned in a CYCA magazine a little while back (just briefly and saying, from memory, how capable it is). Ultimately for me it was a bit too small for my cruising interests. Now that you're racing it, how often are you having the hull cleaned?
Great video, congratulations on the milestone. You are a braver man than me attacking thos barnacles with no gloves on 😂.
Thanks a bunch. I know some people get more views than this in an hour but for a channel without bikinis, I think it's doing okay!

@@BALO.Marine Thanks very much. I appreciate the support. Regards, Tony.
Wow all that motoring, how much fuel did you end up using? We just sailed to Shelly Beach today as a test run toward venturing out of Sydney Harbour. Hopefully we will get out to Pittwater and Brooklyn.
Hi Phil, How much fuel? Good question. To avoid glazing, my engine needs to be run at over 2500rpm. For pottering around I run it between 2500 and 2800 which gives me around 4kts and uses about about 1.5 L/hr. the engine really takes off after this and I find that 3000rpm gives me an easy 5kts but it almost DOUBLES the fuel usage! The max recommended cruising speed is 3250rpm but it's an older engine so I keep it to 3000rpm max. There's not a lot of speed difference after 3000 in any case but it does improve the torque. It's a nice cruise to Shelly Beach. How does the family go out of the heads?
Great video mate, shame about the wind but im sure you enjoyed the trip anyway.
Thank you. Yes the trip was a hoot and I can't wait to do it again.
Hell yes they are. If you run them through blocks mounted on the spreader a foot or so from the mast, the battens won’t hang up when you raise the main.
I've never seen that done before. Sounds like a good solution. Thanks for watching!
