i asked a friend the same question a long time ago, this is something thats different for each individual just like every form of music and how someone listens to it. i will take a quote from a review of a historically appreciated noise album by a project known as Prurient. the album is history of aids. heres what somebody has to say about it. "This is not the most sophisticated or diverse Prurient release, but it will always be my favorite. It is harsh and dissociative. It is paradoxically emotive and humanistic. Check it out." its always going to be up to the individual. merzbient is more long and droned out way more than other work by him so its safe to assume that the normal thing would be background. i have assorted the inserts in the video that are normally included so you can get a decent experience of what it would be like to have it physically. tldr its entirely up to you and whatever is more comfortable. its all about interpretation at the end of the day.

​@noway__ I saw ur Jake playlist!!! So many songs that I've never heard before TYSM 4 archiving these🤩🤩 yeah SAME BTW I've been listening 2 him since I was 15! (I'm 24 now) I used 2 browse his MySpace before it was deleted & I've combed through so many of his socials 4 his old music, his SoundCloud is what got me hooked before I found his band camp ^__^ I recently was able 2 buy some old art from him & he's the sweetest ever😭😭
