Since experiencing tokenism at work, I have no room for error. They have been on my ass more than any of my other co-workers and the weight has been so heavy on my. Im trying hard not to give up and to push through to open the door for better for myself but dang! This has been pretty challenging for me. Gods strength and wisdom is the only thing getting me through this.

Thank you for speaking on this topic. Being in my twenties, I and most of my peers within my generation assume that these aren’t issues of our present but the past. Having moved to Florida and being the only black person at my job and the only black person out of my roommates I can tell you it’s still a present issue. Not only that but the fact that my parents raised me to be a token and how deeply embedded within me, the desire to be different than other black people. My initial response after realizing I am a token was to run but God is saying to learn to deal with it and not hinder myself in the process. There’s no difference between me and other black folks. We’re all in this together.

People see covert racism...many just want to keep their jobs. There are many racists at the top. Those who killed your career need to be exposed. I hope you called them out in your book.

As someone on the spectrum this dynamic 100x causes incredible damage pain stress. I don’t pick up on subtleties. I’m a direct and literal thinker. This interview is everything in helping me KNOW what the signs LOOK like when I’m targeted. Otherwise I’m lost and confused and crying all the time.
