G.J.CHURWARD & THE GWR ! Designer: George Jackson Churchward Great Western Railway "Bird Class" a part of the "Bulldog" Double framed Class, or GWR 33xx 4-4-0's. Introduced in 1898, while William Dean was still in office. They were a part of the then revolutionary advances in Locomotive design being slowly introduced by Churchward as his experimentation with Boilers, Fireboxes, and valve gear progressed. These 4-4-0 types were effectively a stop-gap in his progression to the modern 4-6-0 "Saint" 29xx Class of 1902. Indeed it took roughly another 20 years for other Railway Design Engineers to realise the huge advances Churchward had implemented on the GWR. Only when the Collett "Castle Class" 4-6-0 of 1923. Itself only a slight modification of the Churchward "Star" class, was pitted against the much larger LNER 4-6-2 "Flying Scotsman" (1922 GNR design), in competitive trials, did other railway Engineers finally wake up to the fact that Churchward's design parameters of 1902-3 were so much more advanced. The tapered Belpaire firebox, and tapered boilers, with long lap, long travel valves, meant that Churchward designs used roughly 30-35% less coal per hp hour, and less water. In addition to which they provided more power in a significantly smaller loco than those built by other railways. Indeed R.E.L Maunsell (SECR) was the first to appreciate what Churchward had done, as seen in his 1917 N Class 2-6-0. But then Maunsell had Harry Holcraft from Swindon on his design team. Holcraft had been Chief Draughtsman at Swindon under Churchward !!!! The model seen in the programme, clearly reveals the Churchward Belpaire firebox & tapered boiler. The type used just prior to the final development of the "Tapered" Belpaire type used on all major GWR 4-6-0's from 1902-3 onwards. Posted by an ex BR Mechanical Engineer CM&EE Dept (retired).

I have had some Tom Barratt brass plates made and fitted them to my TB locos. When Tom saw one he was not happy. He said it should have said Mr. T Barratt.

where can i buy this roller road tester today? no body makes it except Accucraft's individual roller unit w four bearings. And un4-2-8ly, the bearing diameters r too big so there aren't much space betwn the drivers to insert starter fire for an alcohol powered loco. Very nice shot of the Aster model w three working cylinders. From the USA
