Hi, hallo, moi !
We are a family of four (AT/FI) starting a new life in northern Europe! We left Austria in July 2022 and lived in Turku, Finland with a purpose to find a little farm where we could just live in peace and quiet on and of our land. And we found it! In July 2023 we finally moved to the countryside and have been living since then in Central Finland.
If you want to see how living in Finland is and how we are starting our homestead - jump on board! :)

Finland 🤗 (And some clips are obviously from Austria)
Hi. 👋 I absolutely enjoy your content! So relaxing and informative. How do the kids go to school if you’re so far away from Turku? Is not exhausting having to drive so far to school and back?
Hi and thanks for commenting! We don’t live in Turku anymore, it was just the gap year which we spent there while searching a place to buy. Now the „city“ and the schools are about 20min drive away - so not that far. The kids always drive with the school taxi (which takes 25-40min) where there are also their friends so they like it a lot 🤗
@@extranorthinary ahhh. Alright, I understand now 🙂. Thanks. My partner and I are looking to relocate to either Finland 🇫🇮 or Germany 🇩🇪 at some point in the future. Your videos have been SUPER informative. I enjoy your videos because they dive deep into what I think are important topics, provide so much information, and give a lot to think about. Keep doing your thing ✊
Thank you, so glad I can help 🥰 Finland and Germany are quite similar and yet very different, a pro & con list helps when you are making those kind of decisions. Wish you all the best for your future, wherever it will be 🤗 !
Wow! I will be visiting Turku this September (specifically in the ruska time, because I want to see autumn colors but the Finnish edition :D) and this video is super helpful with places to see. Thank you :)
So nice to hear I could help! If the water bus is driving, I definitely recommend to drive with it to Ruissalo. It's like a "normal bus", meaning you also pay just the normal price (www.foli.fi/en/timetables-and-routes/water-bus) 🤗
I imagine winter in the countryside in the far north has some struggles (snow plowing) but on the other hand - the silence, the calm, the views like out of a watercolor painting... Introvert heaven.
Like a watercolor painting indeed, with all that beauty you'll easily get through harder days and tasks as well 😍 !
This year I started learning Finnish. Eventually I'm moving to Finland. This country has all I need: lots of nature, good food, people who mind their own business, personal space, not too hot summers and proper winters.
Sounds like Finland would be a very good option for you! Finnish will definitely not be the easiest language to learn, but once you live in a Finnish speaking enviroment you'll learn it faster. I wish all the best for your plans 🤗 !
Thank you, appreciate your videos, i am originally raised in a rural area, but work has always been in the city, lately I'm feel unsure why I am here...especially after going home more and visiting. I wish i knew how to start farming, but i am a single lady....
There are many single ladies on UA-cam who have done it all alone 🤩 ! I think you don't even need that much real knowledge (most of it comes anyhow with the experience), what you need a lot is courage to try things you have never done before. I hope you will be happy, whatever you decide to do 😘
@extranorthinary that is very true! Either way love your videos and so look forward to them, nice to relate on things!
Lovely vibes!
Midsummer is lovely 😍 !
Turku is a lovely city! Glad you had a pleasant stay!
Very 🥹🥰 !
Thank you for your video. I think it's a good perspective about the public health care system, however doesn't apply to most people. Practically all finns who are employed visit a private health care operator provided by their employer like Mehiläinen or Aava or Terveystalo etc., where they can get a time for the same day and everything is available online too and you get your preferred doctor and everything is in great quality and so on. The people using the public health care are then of course mostly the elderly, the youth and so on. Not a lot of people in Finland really praise the public side, but the one for working people is very good and reliable. This was just I think a good added value context to the issue. Ps. Never in my life have I heard anyone going to Russia for a doctor, if you've really heard of such a case, that is beyond extremely rare exception. Regardless, good video. 🙂
Very good point! Although as far as I know even if it is compulsory for the employer, they can also arrange it through the health centre (especially in the smaller towns where there are no Mehiläinen etc.) and there you once again don't have all those benefits. But it's ofc up to you where you live, that's at least something you can decide for yourself. And yep, Russia has obviously been just one case I've heard but it sounds so unbelievable that I had to mention it! 😄 Poland and Germany are very popular countries to go. Thanks for commenting and explaining, this is definitely a good information for people thinking about moving to Finland! 😊
There actually is an option to book a time with a doctor electronically at Varha eTerveyspalvelut, but the down side is, they have not yet made an English version of their site. The thing that surprised me however, was that It's currently available only in Finnish and Swedish, which is strange, as OmaKanta is also in English. That is the National Healthcare Database, where you can see all your health data, that you have either transferred or accrued while living in Finland and used the health care system (at least for Finnish citizens). Still, you can't choose your own doctor in Finland by default, but you do have the right to ask for a specific doctor by name or another doctor, if you deem the one taking care of you has not been suitable for some reason. If you wish to see a specific doctor though, then you do need to take into account, that they have a busy schedule and meeting them may take much longer than taking the first available time. At least, this was my experience at the Helsinki Metropolitan area. The reason why it takes so long to get a non-acute doctors appointment, is that Finland has a severe lac in doctors - or at least public doctors. It is still hard to say how to ensure what happened in the US and many other countries wouldn't happen in Finland also, if the health care system was privatized completely, as it would not make it cheaper by default. - as was seen in the Taxi law reformation few years back, as right wing politicians promised that it will bring prices down and make traveling by Taxi better in every way, the opposite happened and Taxi has become much more unreliable and a tad costlier than before. But I do agree that the current system needs to be fixed as soon as possible, so that people can really get treatment faster, like they used to years ago.
In Austria you also have to wait a bit for an appointment with a specialist if it's not that urgent (e.g. I had some weird skin issues and called a dermatologist and got an appointment 3 weeks ahead (it was a public dermatologist, meaning I didn't pay anything since I paid already a compulsory health insurance)) - but yet it was always so nice to know that no matter what, the doctors are really trying to help you. There are just way too many young people in Finland who are getting very ill because the doctors don't take them serious - and how could they, they don't have time (or motivation - for what?) for that. But like I said, the other side - doctors working more for themselves and "earning" their patients is something what the Finns can't imagine, because here it has been like this (only health centers) at least 50 years I guess. For Austrians it's more than normal that you can even drive to another city if you look from the online reviews that there's a good specialist - or you can also choose your home doctor there if you want, who cares, it's your life. As far as I know the taxi law reformation was pushed through a bit too fast and not very well prepared. Thanks for taking the time for such a long and explanatory comment, maybe we'll see some change ... I would say after about 20 years when this socialistic utopia is finally collapsing 😄
It has been nice to see many kinds of immigrants making these videos about their lives in Finland or how it has affected them. You are actually the first one I have watched, that has criticized the health system at it's current state and for a reason - "they gone and effed it up" so to say, with their extreme savings program with no real plan on how to keep the system effective while reducing costs. All the while actually hugely increasing middle management costs in the process, even though they are closing down health centers left and right around the countryside - while the saved money ends up in the middle managements pockets. It's a true sh*tshow for sure. I just hope that in 5 year the politicians and the health sector can get the system working closer to as they intended in their speeches and within 10 years bring back health services closer to people in Rural areas. The sooner the current system gets fixed, the better. But onto something more positive that I must make sure if you have tried while living in Finland - as even though bureaucracy is slow here, you can tax deduct basically any business expenditure you have. Even if you hire someone, you can tax deduct their pay at least partly from your company's taxes. Though you should verify the details with an Accounting service (Kirjanpitopalvelu in Finnish) - they are dirt cheap if you find the right one, as especially in bigger cities, there is even too much competition in that business landscape, according to one representative of theirs, who was making a presentation at a business course that I went to last year. Of course, the expenditure also depends on the amount of business transactions they need to check, but If i'm not mistaken, even those their services are deductible from your business taxes. Though I highly recommend for you to make sure, what things are deductible in your line of business as there are some differences in different business sector's. I also don't know if you tried to find out already about some possible EU and State funding benefits you can also apply for, as businesses are eligible for State benefits in over 95% of Finlands area, that is meant for rural development. More information on Finland's State benefits can be found at ELY-Keskus, or "Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment" website, under the "Business and industry" tab. At least it's worth checking out, if you haven't already. You can also ask there about the possible EU Funding programs for businesses that are currently on-goin. I wish you all the success :) Good health and long lives to you all.
I couldn't agree you more
Ihania lampaita❤☺️🌞
Ne on 😍🖤 !
Lampaat on ihania!
Ihailen aina sun videoissa noita korkeita kuusia! Ihan mahtavan näköisiä🌲 Kyllä 4 vuoden aikaa on mahtava asia, silloin osaa arvostaa kesää.

We had to keep the water running in the basement in Pennsylvania when it was only -3*F! That’s very common! It keeps the water from freezing when there’s motion. You can wrap the inside pipes just inside the wall with a heated tape that must be plugged in and that’ll keep the pipes from freezing also but minus22-30 C? WOW, that’s cold!
Here it's not that common in the newer houses where the pipes are insulated or at least wisely located, but in this kind of old ladies where there hasn't been any water earlier and the pipes have been installed afterwards it's a bit more complicated 😄 If we would have the oil heating on, it wouldn't be that big problem either. I wish you a nice winter in Pennsylvania! 🤗
😂hello! greetings from Vienna/Austria just now it is cold here also, esp. at night We have -11 degree C. The coldest I can remember was -20 C. But in some Winters can be a lot milder. good luck!
Hrrr, I remember having once very shortly -18°C in Innsbruck and that felt SOOO cold there since it was usually rather close to 0. So I definitely feel for your icy Wien! 🥶😁 Danke and have a nice winter, no matter warm or cold! 🤩
Greetings from Turku and thanks for your lovely update in wintry C Finland! Am a little surprised about your light winter clothes requiring layer upon layer (perhaps more suitable for Austria or winter sports). I've lived in the Himalayas and also have much heavier winter clothes when necessary (e.g. fur caps, very thick wollen caps, socks and pullovers from the Himalayas, Faeroe islands and Iceland; also a variety of underwear including Norwegian arctic ones and 100% woollen ones; Swedish Arctic coat, long sheepskin coat, etc.). In Norden we have very different seasons necessitating a larger appropriate wardrobe. Of course it takes a bit of money and time to acquire it. Another tip I learned elsewhere: You might pile up snow on the outer walls of your house to insulate it better against wind and cold. After all frozen water (snow) is close to 0 degrees C, not minus 30! Cheers and enjoy the winter wonderland and aurora borealis!
Thanks for the tips - I could definitely need some new winter clothes, but I always buy stuff only for the kids 😁 But like I said I haven't been feeling cold so this is working for me. Of course making the huskies ready and driving with them IS like sports, maybe that's why! 😄 And yes, snow is a very good insulator. Happy winter days also to lovely Turku 🤩 !
@@extranorthinary Second hand shops in towns are great for saving money on clothes - not only for kids. In Turku (pop. 200 000) we have half a dozen 2nd hands, and I've occasionally made great finds, e.g. pullovers, even a couple winter coats. In the countryside you may have to depend more on Internet shopping.
@@alpovratia6488 True that, I just don't like shopping at all 🤦♀😂 I visited many second hand shops in Turku but they were often so full of people that I had to leave after 5 minutes (Puutori was quite nice in the mornings). Here we also have a couple of them and it's a bit more spacious and nicer. And Facebook flea market groups are of course working very well, the Finns have a really good second hand culture! 🤗
@@extranorthinary True - the 2nd hand shops used to be a pleaant treasure-house here. Was able to pick up a fine, brand-new summer suit for 20 € and much, much else. At one time I could hardly believe my eyes - women's mink coats were on offer for 30+ €uro! But since the cultural enrichment in 2015, the scene has changed.
Hello & best wishes.. The weather there is so very challenging. It is a great thing that there are good neighbours! It is also extremely beautiful! I've known bad weather, but to be forced to keep the water running 🙄 to prevent frozen pipes! Hope it gets warmer soon and you can insulate those water pipes. 😊
Yes, good neighbors are so valuable! The pipes don’t usually freeze, now it was just really long so cold that you rather just let the water (here in the countryside all have their own wells) run than take the risk 😬 It is indeed very beautiful, thanks for commenting 🤗 !
Very common thing to do. See my comment below.
@@extranorthinary You're welcome. The fact is some of us look for change and challenge - it can be a quite a balancing act! 🤗. All the best to you!
@@bron-sconcess.10 So it is! We are happy to have these kind of challenges because we did choose to live here in the north, in the south there would be other problems again! 😁 Thank you and the same to you 🤗
Hello, Kuusamo here! Magical -40.9°C 😮 Three days of it was quite enough, but inside was cozy and warm. Today only -20°C Hurrah! 😁 Greetings, Mirja
Magical indeed 💎 That -20 really feels so warm again and on Tuesday we should have +3, I don’t know what to wear then, only one layer I guess! 😂

Snow is the best. Lumi on parasta.
True words 😁 !
Mem, looks so quite and peaceful. I really admire your lifestyle. I am very much interested in farming also.
It’s truly very peaceful here. I hope your dreams come true as well 🥰 !
One thing I did not expect from Finland is that at the workplace is allowed to shout at an employee, and if a colleague gets angry and shouts, you can not say "That is not the right thing to do" because it will shout more, you can not complaint because no manager wants to take the responsibility to tell that is wrong and there is no working law that you can have to be supported, is just wrong. The medical care is very expensive here in Kuopio and you need to tell everything to the nurse first and if the nurse is up to it, you can go to the doctor, I am just so disappointed.
I guess something like that can happen everywhere, but the Finnish medical care is definitely in a league of its own - in a negative sense 🤦♀ !
That is simply not true. We have a robust worker protection system in FInland. If you boss is shouting at you and you have proof, you can report them to the worker protection agencies and they will be reprimanded and even fined if they keep on doing it. Know your rights.
😂😅Wow, what a load of old shit. Funny, that people pretending to know or "heard" stuff, do not even know the basic, simple facts. Socialism😂 and a list of countries in Forbes😅😂. So, you do not even know, what you are reading. What is the difference between socialism and social-democratic government like in every Scandinavian and Nordic countries? There is not a single country in the World without substitutions. Finland does not "give" any impressions about anything. Sorry to tell you but it is an UN-International independent organisation, which makes the evaluations. I still think you need mental help. It is too hard for you to live here. Why did you hàve to leave Austria?
I didn't say Finland is a socialistic country, I said there are more and more people thinking very socialistic (although e.g. Li Andersson is actually also using the term "nordic socialism"). Thanks for commenting 👍😁
Your land is very beautiful. Everything looks so calm and peaceful with the snow. Thank you for the video.
