Situationist Movement: Neo-Marxist Art & Abolishing Creative Directors
NOTE! I'm sorry about the weird editing in the beginning :( UA-cam copyrighted me for me Chet Baker song intro and trimmed it very sloppiiy out causing a weird weird cut in the beginning... I swear my editing skills are better I'm sorry!!!
In this video I discuss McKenzie Wark’s book “Leaving the Twentieth Century” regarding Situationist International, a radical neo-Marxist/neo-Dada/neo-surrealist philosophical “art” movement that radicalized popular anarchist and conceptual art today. I connect it in relation with my strong sentiment against creative directors, usage of Pinterest, and commodity identity politics.

Theresa Hak Kyung Cha: Fragmentizing Korean Female Fragility
Переглядів 4,1 тис.2 місяці тому
This is a Korean artist/author incredibly important to me! Her work on grief stemming from the concept of language serving as memory yet simultaneously dismembering it is one that resonates with me deeply. She has shaped so much of how I view myself and my own methods for navigating purpose. !!! I purposely chose not to discuss her passing for multiple reasons-the main one being that tragedy sh...

In this video I heavily reference and discuss Eunsong Kim’s “The Politics of Collecting”, a book on critical art history and how legal notions of property become foundational to avant-garde and modern understandings of innovation in conceptual art and experimental poetry. This video title is reactionary on purpose! I don’t actually hate it I’m just offering a critique that Eunsong brings up tha...

Hello friends and art history enthusiasts! Out of all the video essays I’ve made so far, this one by far has been the most in depth, interactive, and time-consuming to make, but one I’m very proud of and will cherish. Dansaekhwa: A Hidden Korean Contemporary Art

Hello ! :) In this video I’ll be discussing Dansaekhwa, a 70’s contemporary art method practice that was birthed from the turmoil of the Korean civil war and socioeconomic unrest. It embodies the Korean culture of endurance, sacrifice, and generational sorrow that is unique to the Korean diaspora and cannot be referenced in relation to any other. I heavily reference Joan Kee’s book: “Contempora...

Hello!!! I feel like a bigger thing I’m trying to emphasize is using this platform as more than a digital archive and also as a space to uplift previous marginalized and previously unheard artists that I think deserve more recognition. Marisol Escobar was more than a beautiful face in Warhol’s films, she was an outstanding leading figure in the New York 60’s pop art scene and it’s astonishing t...

There are a lot of music projects that are influenced by the Situationists. The group DEVO certainly appears to show some Situationist tactics and methods. Though Mark Mothersbaughcalls himself a post-structuralist. The entire genre of Industrial music, at least as initially practiced by acts like Throbbing Gristle, Einsturzende Nuebauten and Test Dept very much seems to be the musical answer to the Situationists. Though only Test Dept and a few others could be thought of as having a Marxist element.

I found this really interesting to watch through my lens as someone who is likely (not formally diagnosed) autistic. When you were speaking about yearning and how capitalism disconnects us from nature/our human nature, it reminded me of something related I've been thinking about lately. Basically that autistics are fundamentally unable to adapt to our modern capitalist world because we cannot be separated from our nature, and how the manifestations of this reality are labeled a 'disability.' Its even more painful seeing as these traits are actually advantages in a natural communal world/way of living, which is why autism is actually a positively selected gene throughout time. On a personal note, something I've been contemplating the last two years is giving up the dreams, goals, and expectations I've had for my life since I was a child, and moving to another country to be immersed in nature and live a 'small' life. I know that my dreams of individualistic actualization through corporate america were absolutely indoctrinated into me by capitalism, but its so deep it feels impossible to unwind, and I worry that moving on will feel like giving up and I'll live to regret it. I keep coming back though to the way I felt when I visited Tuscany this summer. For the first time in my life I felt truly at peace, completely fulfilled, and like a human being, not a computer program locked away in my mind, disconnected from my body, nature, and humanity. The only thing is I was staying at a villa where all my needs were being met, it was a fully non toxic establishment with no screens or toxic chemicals/foods. I know I can't provide that level of natural for myself, and half assing it wouldnt be worth letting go of my entire first 30 years of life on this planet. I don't know. Maybe it would be, and more. Anyway, thank you for sharing whats on your mind and what you're learning and realizing in life.

It concerns me that even though artists often work in dangerous conditions (toxic paints and liquids, working on scaffolding, working with heat and fire for glassblowing and metalwork, and heavy machinery for carpentry and certain sculpture) we really have a lack of health and safety standards, regulation, and accountability. I notice this especially with artists who are outsourcing physical labour for their work more than with well accredited institutions. Although of course it still occurs in these institutions and I am of the opinion that they must ensure that if they are hiring or exhibiting an artist who is outsourcing labour, they should make health and ethical checks, both before hiring the artist, and also during if the work is commissioned.

I'm surprised by no mention of Michèle Bernstein. She's viewed by many to be the epitome of the Situationists, though she retired from the group in 1968, whose momentum brought the group to even greater reknown. Her second husband, after Debord, Ralph Rumney, is quoted saying of her "She was the one in Cosio who picked everyone up on the fact that one does not say "Situationism" but "Situationist", because when it becomes an "-ism" chances are that it will turn into an ideology, a sect", which is just as you were speaking about the movement not being definitively belonging in any categories of social and cultural production. Very delighted seeing this video (mostly by serendipity alone has the Situationist ethos been a major influence in my life) - great job!!

Definitely going to take a look at the book recs, and will take any others that other folks may have!!! I'm grateful that this gives me a spark of courage. I'm a gardener right now, went to college for acting and graduated during the covid pandemic. Subversion and disruption in career and plenty other facets of life is almost all I know, and further Re-Evaluations (as I like to call them) are pretty much assured, but the links between spirit, art, service, ecology, and critical-left politics offer traces of a beautiful path for me. Glad to be in the comments with y'all on this one! Blessings in your endeavors!

What I noticed is that there is no definite timeline on when she did these paintings right, Google it just says 1948 for all of her works of art, cause like I was confused about why you put the year 1896 on her 'Self Portrait' painting, just an observation lol anyways I love your videos and as someone who studies visual arts your videos definitely piqued my interest.

Lovely video Shannon! As a Korean, I totally agree with your criticism on the Western misinterpretation of Dansaekhwa, and I think the same kind of misinterpretation happens just too often with many different aspects of Korean culture (or any Asian culture, really). I've noticed some errors on Korean spellings: 5:30 (현명 -> 4. 19 혁명) and 15:08 (참마 -> 참아 or 참다). Please make sure to double check your spellings in the future. I subscribed to your channel and hope to see more amazing contents from you! :)

Wark's book is fantastic! McKenzie attended an event here in Bloomington, Wounded Galaxies: 1968, a festival celebrating the 50th anniversary of the revolutionary events of the spring and summer of 1968. Meeting and talking to her was a highlight of that week. McKenzie is not only whip-smart, but very personable, curious, and really interested in talking to people. She and I had a long conversation about The Pogues, for example, which I really enjoyed. If you can, find the hardback version of Leaving the Twentieth Century, because the dust jacket folds out into a fantastic two-sided poster.

This is so good, thank you... delighted I stumbled on your channel - even as an LSE graduate (ouch). I wasn't aware of the situationist movement, though I have encountered its ideas via some of my reading on activism that uses similar (derivative?) ideas about spectacle. I find myself very aligned with situationist principles. I love the slogan, "Live without dead time" - which seems to draw on Henri Bergson's notion of "durational time" as lived experience, which is distinct from "clock time" which he pointed out is no more than a space-time measurement system (ie a day is a revolution of the earth round it's axis etc). BTW, on plagiarism any viewers considering the legal situation around works of art might want to check out on their favourite AI "Fair Use" allowed for "transformative" works, such as commentary and satire or education.
