5:12 Thank you for sharing part of your painful history. Our firsthand experiences often provide valuable context for biblical education. There is a lot to say about high standards, harsh self-criticism, and how we should gently course-correct others. Jesus urged his disciples to elevate their moral principles and to practice spiritual discipline. He preached mercy and forgiveness, especially for those who apologize in earnest and repent. But He also spoke of terrible consequences for those who do not pursue righteousness and virtue. Jesus knew how to raise up (educate, train, enlighten) a person gradually over time. For three years, He lived, worked, and preached alongside His disciples. They witnessed His examples in both word and deed. When we feel frustrated with our own deficits, the only effective counter-balance I know of is to build a true relationship with the Heavenly Father. With Jesus as our guide map, God can provide us the guidance we need to feel mercy and gratitude, and to not over-correct our own (often clumsy) navigations. When we are emotionally invested in a loved one, our (often difficult) challenge is to follow in the footsteps of Jesus. Specifically, it is important to maintain a balance of positive-to-negative feedback. Sometimes a strong scolding is necessary to convey that they are doing something dangerous and/or unethical. In order for any unpleasant message to successfully be received, there has to be a heavy counter-balance of love, nurturing, support, and positive guidance. Some present-day psychologists (see Dr. Laura Markham) call this emotional capital. The idea is, you want to have a high level of currency in your loved one’s emotional bank account before you make a withdrawal that is necessary to instill in them an important lesson. Ultimately, if God is our North Star, and if our communications and behavior are continuous attempts to point people towards Him, I believe we will be afforded some grace and inspiration to make our efforts more effective over time.
