    Thanks for a video on this topic. However, just wanted to give a feedback that when I saw the title I wanted just to understand how the KPI card can be used and prepared. Im not really concerned about the formatting which is most part of this video. I will anyway be doing formatting of my own, not gonna follow yours. Pls just focus on the title of the video and the technical aspects.

    This is excellent information!!! Is there a way to use Path function if the child has more than one parent? I keep getting and error stating item from parent is not found in child column.

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 7 днів тому

      Thanks for sharing and happy to hear you find it valuable!! For that error, the function does need a single parent to work properly. You’ll need to adjust your dataset removing the multiple values.

    Nice video, thanks. A couple of comments: i find users often dont like reports or dashboards where a lot of condensed info is on the front screen - they prefer to rather navigate to additional info. Im sure it varies by type of user! As far as your visuals go, I like your use of "components" to construct each block, but I think some of your colour and placement choices aren't particularly pleasing and detract from the visualisations. Personal choice I guess

    Hi what is the z-order in power bi how it's work

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 16 днів тому

      Hi thank you for your question. Essentially z-order is the front-to-back order in which visuals are organized on a page. You can choose “send backward” or “send forward” to adjust the priority of z-order overlap.

    Thanks for sharing and for the great insights! You’re my No. 1 Power BI expert! What’s your experience with Power BI Co-Pilot? The outputs feel a bit too random to me, as it doesn’t allow for much prompt engineering.

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 18 днів тому

      That compliment just made my day! Thank you for your support and for sharing!! For Co-Pilot, there are things that I do like and others I don't. I can confidently say that I do not think the auto report generation is valuable as it misses that human element of being able to intentionally craft the report story, and the formatting is way to template-like. I do really like Copilot's ability to create summaries though!! I think the narrative is awesome and using CoPilot to create DAX has a lot of potential as well. What do you think?

    • @GrittyDuckGrin
      @GrittyDuckGrin 18 днів тому

      @ For complex DAX and more context, I usually use Claude Sonnet 3.5, as Co-Pilot has often let me down. I think Co-Pilot will improve over time, but when I last used it, it was a bit disappointing compared to what other AI tools can deliver. I’d be curious if you might also make a video on Power Apps integration in Power BI. I tried it recently, and it’s nice, but data transfers can be a bit of a hassle. Have a great day, and keep up the good work.

    THANK YOU SO MUCH! This is the first video of yours that I have watched. What I have loved about this video: - Video was clear, crisp and jam packed with information. - You did not go much in depth about the data in the beginning which helped me focus on understanding the waterfall view first. - It also taught me if in future I create this view how will I convey what the data is saying to stakeholders in conceptually clear way.

    This is a great content, thank you very much. I have two questions - 1) when you don't have fixed dimensions where the columns or rows spill over and have to scroll, is there a way to sync the other visuals? 2) is there a way to drill down to another page to provide details on the values?

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 24 дні тому

      Thank you for this compliment and I am thankful for your support! Both of these are excellent questions. For #1 - yes it can sync to other visuals, if you add them to the report it should happen automatically, you can also edit the default interaction to filter vs highlight. Also, if the dimensions aren't fixed offhand I'm not sure how to easily limit the returned results. For #2 - yes you should be ablet to build a drill through, i haven't recorded a drill video yet for you to reference but here's some documentation. learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/create-reports/desktop-drillthrough Thanks for you support and hopefully this answer helps!

    The quality of the content on this channel is always outstanding, and this video is no exception. However, I do have some reservations about the practical use of this approach. I find myself wondering in which scenarios exposing the 'bones' of the model to end users would be beneficial. I'd love to hear more thoughts on the practical applications of this method.

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 24 дні тому

      Thank you for this compliment and I love that you find the content outstanding! For a practical application, this is most utilized when you publish semantic models in your service for other people to connect to analyze data or build reporting. Example.. a finance team of 20 people all connect to a single published semantic model to analyze data and build reporting. Data dictionaries like this will allow them to self-serve knowledge vs having to reach back out to developer to understand the purpose/description of field or specific calculation logic. Would love to hear other ideas as well!

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 25 днів тому

      Thank you for sharing and I’m happy to hear you find it helpful!! For the description field, after you enter in a new description, then you’ll need to click “refresh all” and it will refresh all the info.view tables and the dictionary, then it will show up!

  • @walterstevens8676

    Very interesting! So this covers everything that has been brought into a specific report? How you use it to encompass everything that the data is used for, across all reports?

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 25 днів тому

      Glad you like it!! Yep, it automatically brings in every data element in your semantic model. So if reports share a semantic model than yes, if reports use different semantic models then each would have their own model dictionary. Hope this helps!

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro 24 дні тому

      Hi thanks for your question! To get the display units for a detailed label on a card, you'll need to select a few items. Under reference labels, for 'Select series' choose the movie titles KPI. Then when you scroll down, for 'Select label', pick the desired label, then you can adjust the display units for that label. Hope this helps! You can get more detail on reference cards through this video as well. ua-cam.com/video/XTLo64sydck/v-deo.html

    I know others already told you how unnecessary this clip is, but here's another advice: drop the clickbaity title and stop pounding the length of this clip going over same stuff over and over. You need 3 minutes to even start the thing. 😅

    This was THE game changer video! Very much appreciated 😊 two subsequent issues I’ve had even before watching the video is listed below. 1. I use slicers in my model and to simply filter out the blanks does not work for me as it causes some child nodes to disappear. Is there a better solution because this is related to my second issue. 2. I’ve tried the hierarchy slicer as a work around to the above and used the selection for empty. But, it has performance issues that is not sustainable causing my model to freeze possible due to large dataset, no clue. Hoping one might have some ideas, pointers in right direction because, I need to get this all working for a slicer. Thanks again for sharing this video and in advance for any further insight to my issues.

      This is a very good question and an issue I also experienced after filming this video. I found a fix and it may be applicable for you. I found that the "blank" child records were actually associated with the "parent" of that specific group. So if I filtered blanks, my numbers incorrectly dropped, as the "parents" values were being excluded. To fix this, i created another layer of logic during the PATH process. I populated the first null path/level column with the previous named value, this would capture the manager record one level before where the manager actually resides, so the manager shows up under his own name for the records he is associated with. let me know if this helps!

      @ thank you for your reply, I am trying the logic presented and to no avail 😩 can you share your dax code for this logic so I can see where I’m going wrong.

    Can you elaborate on why you had to save As the PBIP file again in order to upload it on Power BI service?

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro Місяць тому

      Excellent question! The PBIP file concept is currently "new" and still evoling from MSFT. As part of that, there is limited functionality which is improving with every monthly update. Check out the end of the blog below, October PBI just released a new update which allows you to publish right to the service, this wasn't available before, hence the saving. Also, the saving concept ensures that VSCode has the most up-to-date code, which will then be sent to git connected workspace. hope this helps, please let me know if there is anything I can help with! powerbi.microsoft.com/en-us/blog/power-bi-october-2024-feature-summary/

    NOTE!! -- After posting I learned that Folder Hierarchy CAN also be accomplished natively in PBI without Tabular Editor. You can perform this by changing the Display Folder to value Folder\Folder\Folder, essentially separating each level by "\". I was incorrect to state that it had to be done tabular editor only! Thank you @mnedix

      I discovered it myself by accident some time ago :D Microsoft has done this functionality very strangely and communicates it poorly. If you don't know it exists, it's hard to guess that it can be done.

      It’s also worth noting you can have the same measure appear in multiple folders/sub-folders by using semi-colon “;” as a separator. It can be in two places at once!

  • @mnedix
    @mnedix Місяць тому

    All due respect to the effort you put in this video but this is not a hack nor something new. You can do the same without Tabular Editor, you simply have to put the desired path in the Display Folder section in Model view -> Tables using the "\" character. In your example, let's say we have a measure YT_measure; if we wanted to put this in a new folder called YT and this new folder to be created in your Rolling Total folder from the Calculations table then we would simply put "Rolling Total\YT in the Display Folder for this measure. PowerBI will automatically create the new folder for you. Moreover, any other measure you have in your Calculations table can be dragged and dropped into the new folder. The only thing you cannot (yet) do is moving a folder with drag'n'drop (you need Tabular Editor for that).

    Is there a way of using this with multiple columns, where you have data that falls into multiple categories?

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro Місяць тому

      Excellent question! For this specific card visual, it will only function with one column of data. You can try a couple of different/creative solution options utilizing multiple filters though. Maybe create a another slicer of some-type for the other columns, or create a KPI filter for each of the columns you want to filter on. Hope this helps and let me know what you decide to go with!

    Great content! Thanks for sharing. I was wondering if it’s possible to use data results with positions on the negative X and Y axes as a filter. For example, in a real-world case, we may need to monitor items that fall behind a specific indicator or measurement.

    • @PowerBIBro
      @PowerBIBro Місяць тому

      Thanks for sharing and I'm happy to hear to enjoy the content! Yes, it is definitely possible to filter results to only negative values, there are a couple of potential ways to achieve this. You can filter the visual directly, via the filter pane. Whatever value you choose, within the filter pane filter to values less than 0. Or.. you could update your data model to include a Boolean true/false column if the specific value is negative, then add that to our report. Let me know what you decide to go with!

      Great question and thanks for reaching out! Currently this slicker does not allow for reference labels (which could used to add a target value), or detail labels. Currently, you'll only be able to display a callout value to my knowledge. If you find a workaround or another way to solve adding targets please do share!

    Hey dude, its bit of a silly question but I can't find that option to allow users to create and update apps. I do have a pro account and I simply didnt find that option. Is it necessary to have build an app so see that option or is it something else I may be missing? I dont see it in my workspace settings

      Thanks for reaching out and happy to help, appreciate your question! For a quick clarifying follow up, are specifically referring to the general apps or the new organizational apps feature? If it's the new org apps, you'll need to have your PBI admin turn this feature on in the tenant settings of your service. Check out this article below and see the "Prerequisites for creating org app items" section. Hope this helps! learn.microsoft.com/en-us/power-bi/consumer/org-app-items/org-app-items
