Exploring Budget-friendly Madeira, Portugal In The Off-season
Don’t forget to watch the budget section at the end for some tips on planning your trip.
Madeira is popular for a reason - it has so much to see, with hikes for all levels, lots of small towns and numerous attractions to check out. It is still reasonable affordable despite the boom in tourism. For Canadians especially, it's easier to get to than you think.

Discovering Molokai Hawaii and Budget

Molokai is a lush and peaceful island that harkens back to the original Hawaiian taro farmers and fishermen. It is also the birthplace of the hula dance and has an untouched feel to it centuries later. It’s so laidback, there’s not even a since traffic light! It is most famously known for its dark past, where the Hawaiian rulers of the day banished those afflicted with leprosy to a peninsula on...

    Much appreciate the well constructed video and blog which I will use as a reference for my trek. Do most people take the ferry to PG and back to the Park entrance.? Did you pre-book the bus back to Puerto Natales?

    • @YYZWanderers
      @YYZWanderers День тому

      Glad it was helpful! PG and Central are the 2 main start/finish sites. If you’re doing the W, you can go in either direction ie start in PG, finish in Central or vice versa. You need to take the ferry to get over to PG. If you are doing the O, I preferred starting at PG to get my hiking weight down by the time I got to the John Garner pass as we were carrying most of our food. I booked both the buses to/from in advance. I don’t think you can buy on the spot. They only scan the QR code of your ticket but you can check. Happy to answer any of your questions, feel free to send via email at yyzwanderers@gmail.com Happy planning!

    I really enjoyed your video of Eleuthera; it's so friendly and relaxed, your connection to nature. Just as is Eleuthera (Freedom!) is. Enjoy and keep sharing your travels! I was guided spiritually to Eleuthera when I asked myself where to go in the Bahamas in 2000. I felt the urge to go there, have a vacation again. Eleuthera came up, I had to look it up if this really existed and landed in Rock Sound from Nassau, first time in The Bahamas. In my experience, this family island is truly an amazing place. Especially Harbour Island. I ended up there because I wanted to see the Pink Sand beaches. This is one of my (two) paradise islands who I always keep in my heart and have fond memories 💙🐬☀😎❤ When you go there, keep in mind it's a small island so keep it clean. And when you decide to do scuba diving, that where I saw the big ones/fish instead of the coral fish.

    • @YYZWanderers
      @YYZWanderers 19 днів тому

      Thanks for sharing your story, I wonder if Eleuthera has changed a lot since 2000. And agree, we have to be good visitors, reduce/minimize garbage especially if no facilities exist. It’s something we are more mindful of now that we’re travelling more.

    As a subscriber, I was surprised to see this was twice as long as previous videos, but was rewarded by the history, scenery, and variety that this truly amazing, rugged little island provides. I would be daunted by hiking trails that go through tunnels, under waterfalls, and along high, cliff-hugging carved paths less than two feet wide. Only vicariously could I enjoy many of the spectacular vistas the video shows. My favorite scene was the blow hole at Porto da Cruz. From where it was shot, could you hear a thunderous roar?

    • @YYZWanderers

    I thought I was infertile. But i went to that rock with my bros just to check it out. Didn't even want kids at that point. Touched the rock paid my respects while my friends were jumping on it and acting like donkeys.... Soon after I got my gf pregnant. Two awesome and beautiful kids later, they still have none... Thats over a decade later. My oldest is nine and my youngest is 4. I go there almost every year just to pay respects, enjoy, and support the economy. I love Molokai. When it's hot that's the place to be. Just visit and cool down. But I don't touch, cause I'm done. Lol.

    How many minutes Oahu to Molokai?

    • @YYZWanderers
      @YYZWanderers Місяць тому

      45 minutes, but it's because the planes are smaller and don't fly as fast as the big ones on the other islands. It went by pretty quickly - no line ups to board, check in or get luggage so I guess that makes up for the time.

    As someone who is not from Molokai, but who visits often to help friends at their homesteads, something important to cover is how the people here struggle to keep Molokai, Molokai. You should post more about the people and lifestyle here than just recommendations for tourists. This island does not want to be dependent on tourism, it does not want to be like the other islands. If you want Molokai to stay Molokai, do not blast it all over social media.

    do you need to stay at the designated camp areas or can you set up camp anywhere?

    • @YYZWanderers
      @YYZWanderers 2 місяці тому

      In peak season, sites need to be booked ahead as it gets fully booked and you pick a specific site location, marked by the wooden platforms. There’s no wildcamping. Oddly enough, one camp was fully booked but when we arrived, there was only 1 other camper. In low season, you could probably just go to the park office and get a spot, you can see the availability online also.

    what's the flight like from YYZ with that price? Is it direct? or how many connecting flights?

    • @YYZWanderers
      @YYZWanderers 2 місяці тому

      Air Canada flies direct to HNL once a week seasonally, did it a long time ago but we prefer to stop over usually in either Vancouver or San Fran to break up the flight - it's HARD in economy lol. So I'd say it's your choice really as the cost is usually the same. In low season you can get good rates ($650-700 CAD return per person) but flights are getting more expensive these days. We got a free companion ticket with a new CIBC Visa card so you can look into that. Westjet also gives a companion ticket with their RBC Mastercard but I believe you have to a pay partial fee. I have found airlines have the best price 10-11 months ahead of your travel date after which they start to raise prices, then put them on sale for basically the same amount. Use Google flight alerts or Skyscanner to track fares on multiple airlines too.

    Excellent video! I just came back from Eleuthera 2 days ago and amazingly, went to every beach you did except Harbor Island and Eds. (Plus another 14 more!) Current, Ten Bay, Navy and Twin Coves are on the top of my list. Hidden Beach was a 10 minute walk from our house. Tay Bay is up there too and as an FYI is quite a way away east of Preachers and not easy to get to but worth the hike. If you ever go back, Lovers Beach is absolutely stunning. We stayed in Tarpum Bay and even went to the same grocery store (Big Rock) you did. You captured the magic of Eleuthera very well. Too bad Disney has decided to ruin Lighthouse. I was there is 2015 and 2019 and feel blessed to have been able to experience it in its unspoiled state. Nice job.

      @@stumblebassstumblebass3661 Disney built a large beach complex/cruise ship port in the undeveloped southern tip of the island. It was hotly contested for many reasons including environmental impact but it pushed forward. A couple locals we spoke to were more cautious/wait and see POV on how they contribute to the economy post-construction. As far as places to stay, it all depends on what you are looking for, budget etc. There are no big hotel chains, or all-inclusive and any luxury accommodations have a more understated elegance. For $$$$, you can look at French Leave resort, The Cove, or on Harbour Island which requires a short boat hop and is more contained where everything is close by. Hope that helps!

    one more question, you came across any place that have American breakfast?

      Your best bet would be in Governor’s Harbor - try Da Perk on the main road, or Bacchus fine foods. I don’t recall any other places as we ate mostly in for breakfast.

    Wow! Amazing video! Thanks for sharing your experiences as well as tips for those of us who are planning to do this as well. We plan on staying in camp pehoe too however it seems like summer months cannot be reserved online. May I know how you made the reservation? Is it ok if there is no advance booking?

      Thanks for the great feedback! Do you mean their summer (Dec on) - it may not be open yet for reservations and they close during winter. It is hard to get a hold of someone in the off season but try their whatsapp in a few months or the online booking maybe open then too. Have fun!!!!
