  • @suezbell1
    @suezbell1 Рік тому

    Unless it kills the roots, the poison ivy will be back. To kill it only on a tree, simply cut out several inches out of the vine and the vine above dies. What's left below will still grow, though, but you've stopped ... or at least delayed ... having it strangle your tree -- and it can kill a tree by strangling it over time.

    Takes multiple applications. Requires removing the vines (a nasty operation, you better wear LONG gloves) and be careful not to get dust or leaf fragments on your skin. And notice that there is no "1 year later" picture. This stuff will kill the existing leaves, but the roots of the vines will be untouched, and they will start regrowing in short otder. So, this video rates a C- or D.

      I didn't watch completely until the end, but there ought to be a warning about handling and disposing of the dry wilted remaining poison ivy foliage. Whenever I think about "disposing" of something into the trash, I follow the rules regarding the materials or items, but I always think about the human beings 'down the line' who might handle the trash. For instance, if I discard broken glass, I don't just put it in the trash can and forget it. I try to wrap the broken glass in cardboard or heavy paper, and I write on the outside a cautionary message in large block letters, so that the folks at the waste processing plant don't get hurt. I don't know if there is a way to neutralize the poisonous oils in poison ivy to prevent skin injury to anyone. I have read that even trying to burn poison ivy is dangerous, because the gases in the resulting smoke will cause irritation and harm to the respiratory system.

    • @ericmichel3857
      @ericmichel3857 Рік тому

      @@TheHilltopLife I understand, but why do you think salt and acid are somehow better? Anything that kills is harsh, what makes you think the chemicals in your recommendation are any less so? This is just far less effective (so it requires much larger repeated dosing) and takes a lot longer. In many regards it is actually less environmentally friendly. Glyphosate has been in use for decades, and after endless studies, beyond ignorant paranoia, there is zero evidence that it is harmful in any way. It breaks down quickly and is very effective, those are good things. Salting the earth (which is essentially what you are suggesting) is far worse.

    I've tried this snake oil several times on several different sub species of PI in the North Eastern US and have come to the conclusion that while the stuff has an effect on the health of the leaves, it does nothing to effect the health of the root mass. Cutting the vine off at the soil level will only produce a short PI vine which will regrow over time. The leaves of deciduous trees die every fall and return every spring without harming the tree if the root mass and the sugars it stores remain viable during dormancy. The most effective way to destroy poison ivy completely with a folular herbicide is to use a herbicide that contains glyphosate because it will destroy the sugars stored in the plant's roots that were unaffected by the vinegar solution.

      From my own experience, after you have contact with poison ivy, you must wash thoroughly all your exposed skin with soap and water. Also, clean your clothes and tools as well to get rid of the oily resin, urushiol, from poison ivy left behind. The worst scenario if you get poison ivy rash after a few days, get the poison ivy treatment from the drugstore and the rash might take a week or two to see improved.
