Back in 1975 my friend Mary worked for an Afghan breeder who was closing her kennel and owed Mary money. Mary had become attached to the breeder’s 5 year old retired champion stud dog “Rap,” so the breeder offered Rap plus her pick from the latest litter as payment. Rap was beautiful, a grandson of Shirkan of Grandeur (1957 BIS at Westminster), and had done well himself in shows, but he’d never been on rough terrain. The first weekend Mary had him, she took him for a walk in the woods. Rap tried to hop over a log and broke his leg. 😮 So it warms my heart to see your young fellow getting to enjoy the outdoors and develop such agility and smarts. 👍 A couple of years later, Mary moved to San Francisco and wasn’t able to find a place where she could keep Rap, so she gave him to me as I’d fallen in love with him when I first met him. He was a wonderful companion and jogging partner, very good natured and always dignified.

Lovely work! What are the rubber cushions for during the training?

I love how you train your Afghans. You bring a new meaning to the phrase 'positive reinforcement'. It just goes to show that any dog can learn obedience once you've found their motivation! I'm curious though, does your dog still pay attention if a squirrel comes along? Or do you let him chase things and give him lots of time to chase before you start your training? I really want an A.H in the future but I hear that their recall is not so good because of their strong prey drive. Do you have any tips on this? It looks like you are exercising him in a nice safe space though!

I love it ... Freedom is a gift ... Afghans appreciate the freedom you give them with obedience, I have three Afghans and we love to go out at dawn for a walk without a leash
