Program notes:
Phantasmata is a three-movement composition written, by Helmer Bijl, for a large percussion ensemble and piano. It was originally composed for the Slagwerkensemble Elspeets Fanfare Korps and Wibrand van Norel in 2018. This performance features only the first movement.
"The word ‘phantasmata’ means a creation of the imagination and that is what this work is all about. It has no real story behind the music, but it allows the listener to go on an imaginary journey of their own. In this composition you will hear a lot of influences from other composers, like George Gershwin, Aram Khachaturian, and Arnold Bax and film composers John Powell and Bryan Tyler. The complex layer textures of the works by Debussy and Ravel and of the American composer John Adams are the most important influence for this piece and such textures will feature most prominently throughout this piece." - Helmer Bijl, 2022
