Though Fats does it better of course, I love some of the stuff Jo Ann Castle does with her arrangement- especially the boogie woogie section. Footage Courtesy of Lawrence Welk LPs (youtube.com/@LawrenceWelkLPs?si=N2Ke-BuuRcmp_J6a). Enjoy!

Another equally rare but fantastic recording from Big Tiny- his playing on “Down Yonder” in particular is good. Also a funny joke from Welk at the end. Enjoy! Video courtesy Lawrence Welk LPs: youtube.com/@LawrenceWelkLPs?si=jT4VC2yXHg MT7-

This is the earliest known footage of Jo Ann Castle playing her trademark honky tonk piano on TV. Before she appeared on the Lawrence Welk show Jo Ann appeared on many local and national variety shows, including the Ina Hutton Show, Spade Cooley Show, and this appearance, from c. April-August of 1957 on the Spike Jones Show. She’s featured very briefly playing the 20’s jazz standard of “Five Fo...

From the 1964 Lawrence Welk Vacation Show. One of my favorite Jo Ann Castle boogie woogie arrangements- while simple, she takes a 1950’s Welk stabdard and plays it only like she can. Footage Courtesy of Lawrence Welk LPs (youtube.com/@LawrenceWelkLPs?si=N2Ke-BuuRcmp_J6a). Enjoy!

Isn't this fantastic !!! I love this one so much ....I even bought the piano roll. I should record it and put it on my own channel 😊
I love Jo-Ann Castle. Transports me back to my youth. My mom would play piano in our living room, it was an old piano inherited from my grandparents, but it could still play a tune or two haha. Sadly my mom died a couple of years ago, hopefully Jo-Ann Castle is in a restful peace as well. 💕💗✨🥰🤩😹😻❣✌
Wunnerful, wunnerful!
Go girl!

🇧🇪🛜💬🥰🌹🥰
Ted Shapiro was her accompanist and music director but I don’t know if he is the one playing. I thought it sounded like Joe Fingers Carr.

disappointing ending
🤑
A little too much syncopation. There is a piano roll of Johnson actually playing this.
That piano roll is not actually played by Johnson- it’s actually an arranged Connerized roll, with Johnson credited as player, but not actually having played it. It was a common practice at the Connerized roll company.
Why did Lawrence not mention the composer?
Welk never really credited composers unless they were big names like Irving Berlin or Cole Porter. Honestly, he would also often forgo mentioning the name of songs, especially in the later years.
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰🥰
Wow she is captivating
Jo Ann and Del Wood are neck and neck on this song
First time I saw her i vowed to ger that left hand down. Got close with practice but never got it perfectly
She's a legend
True Gs will know what she meant at 0:38
HELLO MA BABY HELLO MA HONEY HELLO M A RAGTIME DOLL
😂🤗Pigs ankle's!
Love that guy
😒
WHERE IS SHE???????
Slay recording Omar. Plz more Jo Ann content.
Did the original film not have musical accompaniment? My son was dressed as the Wizard of Oz for a Halloween thing and he didn't like the fake mustache so I was telling him about these old films with the villian with the mustache and the lady tied to the tracks. That brought me here.
Jeez, she makes it look easey....
Wow!
Wow! brilliant!
Fantastic performance😊❤
Thank you for uploading this one!!!
One of my top 5 favorite songs she ever played!!!! ❤❤❤❤
This is the best version of Canadian Sunset ever recorded. 😊
Omar, she turned 85 last month. Do you know anything about her these days? I heard Adam Swanson say he had been told she was living in a rest home.
That's an old Baldwin upright. Such a great sounding piano. She used this one for most of her recordings. Great post!
Great Fats Waller Tune joann Had Mean Left Hand❤
This was showing today at a long gone local cinema 107 years ago, a few yards from where I'm sitting.
Jo Ann Castle is the most underrated musician. This is phenomenal.
Lovely theda Bara beautiful and charismatic
I always wondered why there were 88 keys. Enough for both to play
Love Jo Ann Castle! I own every Ranwood label album she produced. I own most of her QRS Celebrity Series piano rolls and have met her in person. She turned 85 in September. It's my understanding she is living in a rest home somewhere?.... but I would love to know more about her current life.
This is so adorable.
Wunnerful, wunnerful!
Wunnerful, wunnerful!
I always loved watching Lawrence Welk on Saturday night with my grandmother
same🤣😆
0:13 just amazing. words can't ever give this performance justice
Way too fast. Most people who play this piece play it far too fast. Scott Joplin said himself, you play it steady, not fast.
Depends on how you’re playing it. If you’re going to play it straight then certainly play it at the correct tempo but in this case she’s swinging it and improvising. As she is clearly capable of playing at such a tempo it’s not too bad
I love Spike and his city slickers.
Wonderful! My darling Mother used to play these wonderful old tunes on an upright piano at many dances and celebrations but not as rapidly as the brilliant Miss Castles!
Love Joanne Castle! ❤️ ❤️❤️
Fantastic performance
Outstanding foot tapper. Talent!
