The so-called Spetchells or the lime heaps as I knew them as when I was a young lad in the '50s belonged to the Imperial Chemical industries who had a factory at Low Prudhoe. They were a by-product of the chemicals made at the ICI. The lime was used as a cheap fertilizer and transported in lorries belonging to Addam Lythgoe Haulage. My father worked at the ICI for many years. There wasn't as much grass on the heaps in those days and one night somebody decided to carve a very large elephant in the side of the lime heap, it could be seen for miles, my father knew who did it but he never told. When the ICI closed they had to decide what to do with the heaps as they were still valuable as fertilizer. It was decided to leave them in place. In my opinion, they should have been removed and sold as fertilizer and the land could have been used to build on. But as I say that is only my opinion. However, nature has taken the lime heaps and blessed Prudhoe with its own nature reserve, so well done nature.

Ian Holmes thanks Ian. Flying over snow is very relaxing but a bit chilly for my fingers
