Welcome to Lick Branch Farms, My wife Betsy and I own a small 4 season Market farm in Central North Carolina. Here on our 20 acre farm we raise farm fresh naturally grown produce. My wife bakes fresh pies, cookies and cakes for sale to the public. We also have a acidic foods certification the enables us to sell pickled food products at market and from the farm. We currently attend farmers markets through out the state several days a week.
We have big ideas for the future that include our own farm store, were we can offer to the public our produce, meats, pickled products and baked goods.
Our market farming journey is just beginning, and with big plans in our future, we hope you will follow along as our farm grows. We hope you will like and subscribe to our channel and join us weekly.

Do you plant tomatoes outside or just in the green house
I do plant tomatoes outside, we’ll start transplanting those in April
Really enjoy your videos. Gardening is exciting for this old man.
Glad you’re enjoying them!
I will plant my carrots this weekend! Thanks for the reminder. What about beets outside? I only have a few raised beds for my family's consumption, but always try and grow these two crops with nothing but failure. I feel it's a timing issue. I have the Senninger Wobbler #14 blue, I would love to see how you use your irrigation and how you have it connected and move it. I use mine to water my raised bed and the corn plot in ground with the wobblers running down the middle between the raised bed and ground plot. It gets in the way of the tiller when we plant corn and I would love to see something that is moveable.
Yes we plant outside Beets, I don’t direct seed, never had much luck with that, but start in trays and transplant outdoors in late February, early March. Good luck with your carrots!
I would love to be able to compost my garden like that but because I'm not a market gardener the cost of compost where I live is so high it would it wouldn't be cost effective at least I think it is high priced but I don't know what it cost in other parts of the country but here in south central Kansas I have two options 6 cu. yds. for 500.00 or 10 cu.yrds for 750.00
I get it by the 1 yard bucket and it’s 50$ a scoop my big truck holds $150 worth
Say you have a lot goin on. I'm hooked, keep us undated0 with lots of videos.
Absolutely!
My cucumber plants are the only thing I have trouble growing, because I get those cucumber beetles that have ruined my small crop two years in a row. If you know of anything I can use to combat this on a small scale ( 6-8 plants) I will certainly give it a try. Thanks, and enjoy watching how the pros do it.
They are a pest, I only use pesticides when I have to and it’s always organic. Spinosad will work but you have to reapply often. Monterey garden spray is what I use.
This content is what I need. I never knew to plant carrots this early. I'm in Athens, GA zone 8a and thought it was too cold. Any content like this I appreciate. What to plant, how you plant them and when.
Glad you found us! Stay tuned, I’ll be doing a carrot and radish video here in the next couple of weeks.
We hit 7 degrees in central Alabama. The joke is, Trump fixed global warming on his first day!
Lol we got down to 14 yesterday but we are on a slow warming trend now
My wife thinks I'm crazy because i am out in the garden with a measuring tape, posts and a string line squaring the garden perimeter and making all of the rows straight so you're not alone 🤣
I know man, it’s crazy it drives my wife crazy too but she knows I won’t stop till it’s perfect!
Do you decide against bato buckets for your hydro tomatoes? Heard you say grow bags in a previous video. Looking forward to your hydro tomatoes grow process and nutrients used. Want to do a small greenhouse hydro garden one day.
I did decide against them, not because of any other reason than shipping. I was going to pay the same price for the shipping as it was for just half the buckets I needed for 1 Tunnel. I got enough grow bags to do all of my tunnels twice for less.
New viewer, and wondering was that compost or soil you put on with the wheelbarrow, and what was the other thing you sprinkled on from the can? Here to watch & learn
It was compost, I amended the bed with alfalfa meal this time I normally use Garden Tone but with the temperature as low as it is, there was no benefit. We’ll put some Garden time on top just before we plant it.
In one of your other videos it looked like your starting mix of black gold had perlite in it.
Black Gold doesn’t have perlite in it, pro mix does that’s probably what it was, I use that too
Do you have any videos of your germination chambers? Looks like you can do a large amount at one time. How long do you keep the flats on the heat mats?
I don’t have any of the chambers, it’s basically a boxed in shelve with heat mats and a plastic sheet over the front. I keep the mats on 80 degrees, once the tray is 75% germinated I move it to another enclosed shelve with grow lights and a heater till they get some size on them, then i move the out to the heated tunnel. I can turn 16 trays at a time between the two
What brand of grow lights do you use? I am using two different brands but not having good luck with either.

Is it even worth commercially growing brassicas with that amount of space?
Absolutely, some brassicas don’t do as well as others but things like Kale, Swiss chard, and broccoli are proven money makers on our farm
Hydroponics! Man, I thought I miss just a couple of videos. Guess I’m going have to do some binge watching 😂
Yea, had to do something to keep up with restaurant sales through the winter Lol
❤
What kind of plugs are those that u have seed s in
The trays with soil are Proptek, the hydroponic cells are Oasis
David. What all kind of soil do u put into the grow bags. I have been given 37 black nursery pots they are classic 6900 model. So I think they are 13 gallons. Just wondering on soil. Though about putting my tomatoes and cucumbers in.
The grow bags are pre-filled with peat and coco coir, the soil i use for seeding is Pro mix
I love watching your channel and how you show what you’re doing. I still have an inch or two of snow on the ground with another system coming in Saturday and Sunday. After that day time highs on 17 or 19. I need to search up more propane for the heaters. Stores are selling out as fast as it can come in. Blessings to you and your family, may your’25 be very profitable.
Thank you, we have about 10” supposedly coming next week, we’re not used to that kind of snow Lol
What size of grow bags are u using
39”x 8 x 6
Awesome David. Love your videos. U all do great work
Thank you
We stopped by the Southern Pines market the other day to see y’all and the lady beside y’all says y’all had just left. hate I missed you. What kind of green onions do you plant? do you start with a seed? we are going to try some of those beets that a mono germ. We transplant them with the water wheel planter in plastic. We had problems last year with the other kind, not getting big because we did not thin them.
Dang, I hate we missed you would have loved to speak with you. I planted Hardy white green onions forever and just recently switched over to Parade, and yes I start from seed, super easy. As far as beets, I’ve had pretty good success with Red Ace, but I hand transplant all of mine.
Not fair you are making me hungry for fresh carrots! Love your videos (from snowy southern Maryland).
Thank you
Wow, what size heat mat is that? 4’x8’? Love the videos
Yes, roughly. It’s working out great!
Really enjoy your videos
Thanks, I appreciate it!
I enjoy your videos. I am building a greenhouse now. How wide is your door frame opening?
6’ x 7’ tall
Doors look great. Anxious to hear what your preferred NFT tray is, crop king or DIY. Going to make a small system soon. I used 20 20 20 two years ago on my in ground tomatoes. I used it too long. I was growing more bush than tomatoes. Huge bushes even on determinate. I now only use a little to start them and then go only with Masterblend mixture once every two weeks and did much better. I was injecting through my drip system.
I look the Crop King tray, but shipping was to brutal to continue buying those, the 2x3 gutter does the same thing and I can source those local
Better keep close by!!Trust me I know!!Pumps go out on Saturday night or Sunday!!
I can see that happening, thanks for the heads up
You are amazing you did a great job setting all of that up for our farm to prosper ❤I love you!
Love you too
May I ask what part of the country you’re in?
Central NC
Have you talked about your new NFT channel in a video yet? Looks like rain gutter. Curious how it’s working. It looks good. Are you going to try cucumbers in bato buckets as well? Learning a lot.
New NFT system online and in production | Crop King NFT trays ua-cam.com/video/B6TgSj3AQAk/v-deo.html Yes it is a piece of gutter, I’m going to be changing it soon, it tends to leak when the flow slows down to a trickle, runs behind it.
Is masterblend organic?
No it is synthetic
Love your videos. U and your Family do awesome planting. Where do u get your ground cover.
Amazon
I haven’t figured out what I’m going to plant yet. I have hoops bent for low tunnels but don’t have any plastic over them yet. up here in central KY, I would have a bear of a time keeping them warm enough to grow anything. I know I want lettuce, tomatoes, onions, garlic, green beans and not sure of anything else. Going to get cattle panels for cucumbers, melons, green beans to grow on. Maybe see about a largish 7’ walk in tunnel from cattle panels. I was watching one guy use incandescent lights to help heat his tunnels. We will see. Will try to set something up over Christmas put some lights in to see how well that works. I’m kinda on an open plane and get strong winds. Thank you for your videos. They’re an inspiration to me.
Good luck with whatever you get started with, look forward to hearing about it.
With my raised no till beds, I was growing more than we could eat and feeding the extra to the chickens. That looks like a great idea. I need to do better on planning what I plant and where. How do you keep track of it?
We have to turn in a crop report each season to the local extension so we write everything down on calendars
Love the videos. Chomping at the bit for spring here in PA
It won’t be long now!
I will be growing Red Deuce after watching your show, but too early to start them for Indiana
Red Deuce is a great choice, they’re productive!
Where did you get your high tunnels from?
I bought it used from a farmers market customer. We had to disassemble it and move it to our farm and rebuild it, there’s some videos here we did on it a year or so ago
Very interesting!!
Thanks!
Very nice farm and Garden. Thank u
Thank you
Where do u get the plastic for greenhouse
Farm plastic supply.com
Looks good! How do you sell?We sell by the head but don’t know if that’s fair because sometimes it’s bigger than sometimes. How about the wholesale market? We have talked to some restaurants but not got them locked down yet.We are growing about 2500 lettuce at one time. We grow spring mix in the NFT we sell by the pound. We may sell all by the pound.Just wondering. Thanks!!
We sell mostly by the head, but we do sell bagged washed cut lettuce @ market. We have 2 full time restaurant outlets and a hunting preserve that orders every week. Looking for a few more consistent outlets though.
What temp do you keep your hydro tunnel at?
Right now I have the heater set to come on at 40 degrees, it averages 65-70 during the day here this time of year without the heat on in the tunnel.
Place spring clamps on the end of your Kohlrabi trays to the 2x4 or bungees
Good idea
I really like what your doing!
Thanks
Those lettuce loo damned good!!
Very neat. Pretty impressed by the hard work you did.
Thanks
Like your NFT system. I grow hydroponic micro greens and peas on the silicone mats with Masterblend for personal use. Going to build a small 4 or 5 NFT system like yours to grow greens for personal use. I see great growth with Masterblend. Haven’t bought a meter yet to see what my nutrient numbers are at, Been a ground gardener my entire life and really enjoy hydro.
The meter is well worth the $ you’ll be able to get your EC in line for optimal growth
Looks fantastic! Good job!
Thank you
