Electronn Ghia (Electric VW Karmann Ghia Conversion)
Переглядів 121 тис.6 років тому
Converted a VW Karmann Ghia to fully electric battery powered. It is charged from solar, therefore consumes no fossil fuels and emits no CO2! Leaves no carbon footprint! Infinity mpg! This is my second electric car conversion after a very successful volkswagon bug conversion. The bug uses a Netgain Warp 9. The Karmann Ghia uses a Warp 11 DC motor. It can burn rubber in 3rd gear. Range is 120 mi...

1968 VW Bug converted to electric. Battery powered and charged from solar. Warp 9 series wound DC motor, ZEVA MC1000 controller, 42 Voltronix 160 Ah LiFePO4 cells. Infiniti miles per gallon! Very fast! Please check out my Karmann Ghia!ua-cam.com/video/8dp9tM0mH5Y/v-deo.html More info: evalbum.com/5147
when did you do this? Is that a warp 9 motor? how long does it take to charge and how far can it go?
Great job! We’ve got a Mini EV that the factory basically created by deleting the powertrain and accessories and welding up a cradle that mounts all the EV stuff where the ICE stuff went, bolting directly to the motor mounts. It is a blast although not as cool looking as the Ghia.
Nice job kid ! Now let's blow this thing and get the hell outta here
Not thinking this is for me …yet…perhaps someday
your very good doing conversion
Such a beautiful conversion. Very understated, very well executed. Would love to see more videos
I have a 91 Honda CRX. What would a E conversion cost?
A dream of mine to have an old car converted into electric. Kudos!
A lovely job..., but converting it to electric was sacrilege I'm afraid...😓
Was that from a kit? What’s the range on this setup?
I’m in Atlanta and have a ‘72 KG (I’ve owned since ‘87 in college) in great shape that I’d love to have converted. Do you do this for others? Please respond to let me know :).
I’d like to see an exact blueprint or how to manual of what you did in print I could possibly be interested in that video
I've looked into this conversion and it's terribly expensive for what you get. Love to to brag about the power but a $5000 engine would be more powerful. It's a novelty just because you can but it makes no financial sense and honestly for a car like this why would you want a ruin it with electricity anyway, you want that sound of that flat four rumbling away. These cars are toys not practical transportation. And even if you wanted to take it upon yourself to use it as your practical day-to-day vehicle it's far more practical gasoline than this conversion. Better said it's not even feasible as a true personal vehicle with it's extremely short range. It's like 100 miles or so, dismal and they are roughly 70k. Pretty awful value proposition, and for what? So it has a weird whine that is anyone as all get out or the sweet rumble of a flat four? You have to fall for their marketing hard to want to destroy a classic car like this.
Hi! Nice conversion. Where did you get the tachometer and how did you make it work with the Warp11? I’m staring a Karmann Ghia conversion using an AMD 9” DC series motor at 144V too.
Cool video! That might be the way we could go with our 69 Ghia. My son and I are working on our 69 Ghia that we saved from the car crusher 👍
Did it work? I have a '70, and a '71 in my yard, waiting
P L E A S E ! ! I wouldn't want ANYONE ELSE to touch my 1974 convertible Karmann Ghia after watching your videos and process. Let me know if and when you receive this message/comment.
Would you consider doing an electric conversion for pay? Especially if you didn't have to do any body work? I have a 1974 that I want converted.
I do that, just starting a Karmann Ghia conversion
How does having the transmission work? I love manuals, but I don't know what it does and how in an electric application.
Because it's a basic electric setup and not a Tesla. To make it with no trans would take far more engineering.
Ya one the music was a over kill and too your lieing to your viewers you dont get infinity miles battery's ware out and explode and 2nd if you get infinity miles cannonball across the country you have to stop at like 130 miles and recharge the bug dont fool anyone I also have a electric bug I know how many miles you can go bud nice try your no tesla oh and one more thing my chevy luv maybe gas but it will suck you in your seat and pull more G's than your bug until a electric vehicle cant out perform gas power at the track and I mean a serious gas power than talk but your bug gets the same amount of miles as mine oh and your the world's fastest daily driven bug either theres a silver bug has a tesla motor in and does over 140+ so you've been beaten
Killing Floor Soundtrack great choice!
my mans bigger than the bug
In every other car . . .ok. But in a original old VW Käfer, is it a sin !!!!!!!!!!!! Greetings from Bavaria/Germaney. 😞
Love the skidding but imagine if it was AWD, this thing would take off!
that thing is cool!
Absolutely Beautiful!
How can i get those components dudes
Love how you were talking about the clutch and then went on to explain the controller. "It's faster than hell anyways!" DEAD!
what a shame do that to a perfect running car.
First
Great video!!! The best!!! Can anyone do this, you made look easy. How many horsepower? Did you stay with your stock transmission? I have a competition motor (over 200hp)and transmission (close ratio gears) and pristine looking, do you still recommend electric? Thanks
Thank you! The stock transmission lasted about a week. Had to upgrade to a KCR with a super differential with 4 spider gears, and a welded third and fourth gear. Of course I recommend electric!
I've spent a lot of time looking into this stuff over a bunch of years, and honestly I think this video has been the most inspirational to me. Because it gives me the impression that I can achieve the kind of power I want, with real numbers. I really want to bolt a motor (possibly a Warp 9) directly to a differential. I realize that'll require changing the gears in the diff, but do you think I'd get frustrated with only having one gear ratio? (I've basically always used manual transmissions, but so much stuff says electric motors don't need the gears.)
How do you possess so many skill sets?
Thanks! Mostly because I used to be too damn cheap to hire somebody to do stuff that I could figure out on my own! Years of practice!
HI!!What's the cost for the conversion?
What type of batteries are they mate?
WOW. Great work on this! Absolutely stunning!
Thanks. Really appreciate it!
A very talented guy.
Thank you!
How much you spend on the whole set-up!???
Around 16k for the conversion; 3k for the restoration.
Can you estimate roughly hkw many hours of labor would the ev conversion need. None of the extra body work interior work or other not EV related things. Just have the car run EV. Thanks
great job mate! greetings from Bogota Colombia. Mate, I have a BMW 320 Model 1982. I wanna conversion it. Could ask about the kind of motor? starting conversion soon, Cheers
Amazing conversion and rehab!!! EV is the way!
Love it 👍 had a Karmann Ghia in HS/college. Love my EV. Will never go back to gas.
I agree. All the ev haters have one thing in common-they've never driven one.
@@bottsfinevids4463 I am just gonna buy a Tesla. I don't have the time, patience, or talent to do a conversion. You do beautiful work!
I have watched this video over five times the last year and a half and it ALWAYS amazes me. Do you have a "blue print" or a build schematic? just for ideas for other builders for similar small cars e.g. 1977 Mercury Capri
Thanks, glad you liked it! The only schematic I used was a basic DC wiring diagram from EV West, but it was for the Soliton 1 controller. I had to improvise with the ZEVA which uses CAN. Everything else I just made up as I go. If you want more details, check out the EValbum. evalbum.com/5330
Damn impressive!
Oddly satisfying. Thanks for posting.
You're oddly welcome!
Can you tell me more about your charging station situation from solar, at your house? thanks.
The solar doesn't directly hook up to the charger. Its an 8.2 kw array which powers my entire house and whatever I have plugged in, like the car charger. I produce more than I consume, and haven't had an electric bill since 2010.
Solder Everything! Crimping, no matter how hard you squeeze it, does not provide a Covalent bond. Look it up, you're moving electrons, you NEED a Covalent bond. Solder Everything.
Soldering vs crimping is argued ad nauseam on the internet. Soldering is not necessarily better because it makes the joint more brittle and less resistant to vibration. A well done crimp is just fine. However, you lost all credibility with your insanely moronic statement about soldering forming a covalent bond! Are you shitting me! Any high school sophomore in his first chemistry class knows that a covalent bond is a bond between atoms sharing a pair of electrons and has absolutely nothing to do with solder. BTW, no crimp joints have failed in either of my cars.
How often do people ask you to do a build for them? I just restored my '69 Karmann Ghia convertible and also recently bought a Jaguar I-pace and would LOVE (and pay!!!!) for converting my Ghia into electric!!!!
It is very common, as well as wanting to buy this one! I don't do this as a business, but i would encourage anyone who is interested to do it. I'm also happy to answer any questions.
Final drive in VW gearing is 7.2to 1 drag race gears are 4.88to 1. Regular highway gears are 3.08 to 3 73.
wow impressive
Brilliant set up!
