Ordinary, Extraordinary: My Father's Life. With Bernard Pinsky
Former Winnipegger Bernard Pinsky in conversation with Belle Jarniewski at the Winnipeg launch of his new book-Ordinary, Extraordinary: My Father’s Life-at Berney Theatre, Asper Jewish Community Campus on at 2 pm on Sunday, November 10, coinciding with Kristallnacht. The event was presented by the Jewish Heritage Centre of Western Canada in partnership with the Jewish Child and Family Service of Winnipeg.
Pinsky, now a retired Vancouver lawyer and community leader, chairs the Ronald S. Roadburg Foundation, which works to find philanthropic opportunities in accordance with its vision, values, and priorities, and through the research efforts of its leadership and staff. The Winnipeg launch of Ordinary, Extraordinary: My Father's Life is about Pinsky’s father, longtime Winnipeg resident and Holocaust speaker Rubin Pinsky z”l. Rubin fled a Nazi work camp in May 1942 and survived for more than two years in the forests of Poland, serving as a teenage Jewish partisan.
A former yeshivah student, Rubin Pinsky blew up trains, sabotaged telephone wires and killed Nazis and their collaborators. One time, he even finished off a timber wolf attempting to hunt a wild rabbit the starving partisans had called dibs on, so to speak-they needed the game for their own next meal.
The original manuscript was a biography of Rubin, focusing on his Holocaust experiences. More recently, Pinsky combined much of the original manuscript with his writings about his “roots” trip back to his father’s hometown of Djatvolo in Belarus together with other members of his family, including Winnipegger Lawrence. Prior to the Second World War, the majority Jewish population referred to it by the Yiddish name Gzetl. There, Bernard learned how a history teacher, Zhanna Nagavonskaya, had created a museum in her school. It commemorates the town’s sizeable Jewish community, which was almost entirely massacred by the Nazis. He emphasizes that amid stories of Holocaust survival, one must never forget that six million Jewish people perished at the hands of the Nazis.
Pinsky says that every story of survival, including his father’s, involved a combination of incredible luck, incredible skill, or circumstances in which something went right for them where it went wrong for most people.
The program will consist of a conversation between Bernard Pinsky and Belle Jarniewski, executive director of the Jewish Heritage Centre. Pinsky will graciously offer one copy of the book to each family attending the event.
The event is presented by the Jewish Heritage Centre in partnership with Jewish Child and Family Service and the Ronald S. Roadburg Foundation. We thank the Jewish Federation of Winnipeg for their support.

Professor Ralph Stern’s talk is entitled Two Streets and a Synagogue: Urban Encounters in Nazi Berlin. One of the title’s ‘two streets’ is in central Berlin’s postwar ‘east’; a short walk from what was Gestapo Headquarters as well as what became Checkpoint Charlie and now, the new Jewish Museum. The other street is in the former ‘west’, existing today as it was built in the first years of the l...

Thank you for expanding my knowledge!
This should be clear proof that the early stand of Christians must be adheared to today: God's kingdom is no part of the world. Voting, any political involvement and warfare must all be considered forbidden.
Jewish political self determination is not necessarily Zionism.
This woman is an idiot, a crude simplistic thinker. Why does Israel have a right to exist? It has been declared an Apartheid state by all the main human rights organisations. Did the South African Apartheid state have a right to exist? Of course not! No one in their right mind thinks so. The fact is you cannot have a Zionism which is non- discriminatory. The solution is simple and not even radical-- a single state with equal rights for all, like South Africa today or any of the western democracies. Why do people like this woman resist this? Because in truth they have a Herrenvolk philosophy, ie, the Jews are special and Judaism should not be polluted by having inferior people like the Palestinians in the same body politic. It is time Israeli firsters came right out and admitted it.
Loved her on “The Middle.” She is the kind of person you’d like to sit down with and have a conversation.
Thanks for this presentation. Very sad. Not much is said about the Several Jewish families that converted to the mennonite faith. Lots of Jewish names inside Mennonite faith.
Love this thank you for posting this .
What city was this in? My grandparents and great grandparents were heavily involved in the Peretz shul in Windsor (we have the groundbreaking shovel in our garage!)

Very interesting video. At 49:30 Leo Moser is mentioned as being a strong chess player and a mathematician. Leo had a brother William who was a math professor at McGill university and who was also a very strong chess player. Both brothers were big names in the field of Combinatorics.
FANTASTIC! This leaves me speechless. Rare photos, video and juicy details. Congrats!!
THIS WAS GREAT ...LOVED IT
No more zionism worldwide.
😊 Schalom Mr. Halevy,
I was interested in the history of relationships between mennonites and jews in eastern europe because of sad and personal outcomes with founders effect and BRCA mutations in my family. Mennonite descended families here in Kansas USA are just riven with these mutations so there must have been more than just murder going on. A lot of my family and Kansas mennonites settled here in Kansas in waves before the world wars. We are all having hysterectomies and mastectomies or dying of breast cancer or ovarian cancer. We must have some biological relationship to the jews of eastern europe. I almost feel Jewish. Humans can be so savage but there must also be love.
Is there any museum for the 20 million killed german civilians in the second world war?????
Stalin came on power 1917 he founded the communist party 1922. From 1917 to 1932 million people was killed by the Sowjetunion secret service. The UDSSR took over one country after another country by brutal force. I really will pray for this young woman.

Very canadian. Edit: The video is worth listening to from 31:11 onwards
The Holocaust is an important event people need to know about, but ignoring the USSR is not justifiable in any way. And let's be honest, that's what is done. "Religion was looked down upon."
Does anyone give chess lessons in Manitoba? I'm located in Brandon.
Awesome
Thank you.
Thanks so much for bringing this panel of experts together. It is impressive to see that this is truly a global initiative which brings together people of good will who recognize that antisemitism is a threat to everyone and not just to Jews. It is also very valuable to hear from the Australian panelist who encountered antisemitism while studying in the UK and found that the lack of a definition of antisemitism was an obstacle to trying to get people to take the problem seriously. With all the misinformation being spread about the IHRA working definition of antisemitism, the best remedy is to get out the truth about what IHRA is intended to do and why it is needed. The video clarifies that the preamble to the IHRA examples contains language explicitly stating that criticism of Israel similar to criticism that would be acceptable of another country cannot be considered antisemitic. These panelists address many of the misconceptions that lie at the root of the critique of IHRA that is being disseminated by various groups and by academics, including by a group of Canadian Jewish academics. Another key point is that IHRA is an intergovernmental organization and that adoption of the IHRA working definition of antisemitism imposes no legal obligations on the governments that do so. Panelists also addressed the question of whether the IHRA definition has ever been used to suppress the academic freedom of anyone. The German delegate made the point that it is not the IHRA definition that causes problems for critics of Israel, but that right wing political groups will sometimes to try bar people with a record of criticizing Israel or supporting BDS and erroneous claim that IHRA defines their speech or activity as antisemitic. This is incorrect as IHRA makes no mention of BDS and explicitly states that legitimate criticism of Israel is not antisemitic. Misinformation about IHRA, whether spread by supporters or critics of Israel, is not something that can be fixed by attacking or changing IHRA. It must be fixed by addressing the misinformation whenever or wherever it is disseminated.
It is important to keep the Canadian heritage known. First Canadian (common wealth) grand master. The country is stronger for the diversity of immigrants who chose Canada over many other parts of the world. Thank-you keeping this alive.
Excellent! High-quality stories like these are much appreciated.
A "discussion" about the IHRA definition where all panelists support that definition unconditionally? That's very disappointing. In fact, it's not the Jewish way.
Good upload thank you
