Love it
Homeworld1/2 + MOO + Total War? Chef's kiss! Hope you won't bog yourself down too much with ground combat, like Empire At War did. It would suck if the space battles and turn based layer were amazing but the ground combat an unskippable chore.
Ground combat won't be a separate game mode or a "minigame". Just a process that continues every turn.
This seems to tick all boxes. Gameplay (in battle and strategic), art style, features, music. Even the Kickstarter goals aren't insane and this seems to be standing on a pretty solid technical foundation vs "some jpgs and a vision", which is nice.
Hope there'll be some formations that'll be a bit more volumetric and not just along an axis or plane (or against a bent axis or two intersecting axis), so something like a cloud of ships.
How does this look so cool, when Hoemworld 3 simply couldn't get it's fighter battles look like it did in HW1 or 2? Well done!
This combat system looks good! I'm especially fond of destroyed ships staying in the battle, tumbling around dead in space. Even little strike craft! Awesome.

I like the "Fly, you fools!" mechanic. It so dumb when games make everyone fight to death. Good luck with the project. We will watch your career with great interest!

This is the first game I've seen in recent times that has attempted to deal with 3D space battles in an effective and realistic way. Most space battle games either use a 2D battlescape or pseudo-2D which gives the illusion of battles being fought in 3D.
Ever since playing Nexus: The Jupiter Incident many years ago I've always wondered why there haven't been more tactical space battle games that fully utilise the 3D environment in an effective way. I'm glad to see this one does it and am very keen to see how it turns out. Adding to my wishlist.
How is this going to fare against Nebulous: fleet commander once its campaign gets released? They look pretty similar, relying on physics based space combat.

RTS real time battles mixed with turn based empire management is a lot like sword of the stars. It's a shame that we never got a SOTS III. Looking forward to this. It feels like this might end up being a spiritual successor of sorts.

Your game already looks much better than Homeworld 3. It has that realistic and believable immersion stemming partially from deep physical simulation (making you fee like you're in control which is something Homeworld 2's RNG completely fails at) and partially from something else that's hard to quantify. Homeworld 1 had it. Your game has it. Homeworld 2 and 3 don't (at all).

Looks super cool!
As a fellow Finn I am not inspired by WW2 fighters near sealevel combat transposed to space instead of the ballet of orbital mechanics in space. Objects nearer to a gravity well move faster than those farther away and to connect you have to be somewhat in the same orbit as American astronauts f***ed around and found out on their way to the moon before the Soviets. Make that happen in a 3D environment and you'll make one older grognard gamer originally from Oulu region happy.
:) There are no orbital mechanics in this game. But also the combat does not resemble WW2 fighter combat as in many other space games, as the ships here can float to any direction they want or stay in place.
@@yrdvaab How's the pre-battle planning implemented if one wants to pincer their opponent by let's say dividing their forces to attack from below the "plane of the galaxy" towards upwards and ultimately oscillating like wave around the enemy's plane of forces and say... second group coming from coreward direction to rimward direction?
Currently ships have to be moved to those locations when the battle starts. But the idea is to add a separate phase where ships can be instantly move around before the battle starts.
@@yrdvaab As long as you don't make it and many other things a promise and seem to forget to implement it before launch you will be better off than Hello Games with their launch of NMS way back. Do you guys have a dedicaded marketing/some/email person other than dev/code person filling two types of boots? If not, I highly recommend at least part-timing one one day per week 52 weeks a year.
Luckily I have some people helping with those things. Still I have to do those things myself as well, like here now. :) I try to stay realistic with the features - not overpromising, but not the other way either.
I hate starlanes, when your galaxy look like a urban transport map. I want to play in space, not in the subway.
Hello! Those paths are faster to move through, but they don't have to be used. The fastest route usually follows those but it can deviate from them too.

Hello! I'm following your project for a while and wish your crowd funding campaign an astonishing success. One small note/question: Usually reward tiers on campaigns like that do include benefits from the previous tier, which seem to be not the case in your campaign. It is understandable with Ensign since it provides two Steam keys, but I'm not sure why Physical Box reward doesn't include early access and other non-physical rewards from previous tiers, or why 500EUR one doesn't have a box =) Was it intentional? Have a gread day regardless =)
Thanks for your question! Yes, this is intentional. The physical box is quite expensive to produce & ship, so we are only offering it to people who absolutely want to have it. Since our budget is modest, we would prefer to have the funds available for creating the game, not physical boxes. That said, we have had requests for a tier like this, so it's included separately.

Mmm homeworldy looks good this.
Those 3D selection indicators look pretty bad. You have non-uniform scaling on the boxes and way too large "line width". Would be better to use line rendering such that the width is constant in screen space.
Could also try combining that with rendering a semi-transparent box with normals facing inward. That way you can see clearly into the box but stuff behind it is partially obstructed, which highlights objects inside the box.

Interesting. What kind of motion planning and control architecture do you use? Is there e.g. high-level motion planning that decides the trajectories and decides whether to turn around and use main thrusters and then then a lower level PID loop for execution of the plan?
Nice that you ended up in this old video! I'd love to talk about how the controls work, but I'm still a bit protective of that since that is important hook of the game and no other game of this genre uses this kind of system yet. :)
@@yrdvaab No problem. I'm just curious as your system seems significantly better than what I was able to implement for my 2D game Battlefleet Engineer, assuming you really don't cheat with "convenient" dynamic forces or friction :D I have some maybe additional challenges like crossover between control groups (same thrusters being used both for linear and angular control), and dynamic time step size, but the motion planning math got quite hard for me already in 2D :P

@@yrdvaab it would be more cool if u can find weapon or shields or something else for ur ships or Ressources from Enemys who u destroyed :D and with trading i mean where u can trade then this ressources to the market from other empires ye ^^ pirates would make then good sense and can be implimated in the future when they are not integrated at the moment ^^ because pirates want steal your ships or ur systems like guns or something from ur ships or your ressources what u have in ur storage in ur fleet :D with trading system i mean too that empire b give good prices for food because they need it thats why food buying is expensive there ^^ but maybe this is not the right genre for all this hahaha :D . Then i say it directly in a small sentence when this game is more like civ in universe then ye trading system is cool and important :D that u can trade with enemys but u can boycott them too and they need to search a other trading partner then ^^ it would also cool when it is a own world this is what so many players really like in my opinion a world who is going on when u have no contact with anyone and new Empires can stand up out of nowhere maybe they was earlier a pirate group and get bigger and bigger and then they would create a own Empire ^^ Just view Ideas from me :) procedual generated worlds who simulate himself with u but simulate himself too when u doing nothing like in Mount&Bannerlord but Bannerlord dont have a procedual generated world ^^ with it its would do M&B more better :D this is the new sick shit haha :D. This sentence was Longer then i would to do *:D. Ye Trading between Empires "small sentence".

How is this turn based? I am confused
The empire management part where you manage your colonies is turn based. When fleets meet there is a real time combat. Much like in Total War.
The fact that you say this has ship design like MOO is excellent. :) You need more advertising. I've never heard of this game before now. When you think it's ready, I'd love to do a video on it.

Hey mate; really adore the look of this already; gives me a sort of a vibe of a spiritual successor to Star Wars:Empire at War. I know it's apples to oranges, especially since the combat is actually dimensionally different and nonstatic, and the ships are a lot more fleshed out, but it's sort of a game of that niche I've not seen in years. It looks so promising and I hope you succeed in this. I'll wishlist it right now.

Compared to Stellaris, Ephemeris expands on the combat and makes the empire management more streamlined, to put it short.
no coop no shared world, feels empty and dead without IMHO :(

@@yrdvaab like the single player Action RPG game Dwarven Realms you have a global chat, you have clans and high score lists but you play solo. but still the game feels alive.
