    This style of reverser looks to me more accurate than the Johnson bar type.

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright 3 місяці тому

      Yes, it has a lot more finesse than a lever reverser (the term in the UK used for a bar reverser). In the UK we refer to this type as a “screw reverser”, they were common on locos expected to do longer distance / continuous running; so you can use the accuracy of having more notches to work the engine more efficiently. However a screw reverser requires much more effort and time from the crew to go from full forward to full reverse (lots of turning the handle), than a lever reverser would. So screw reversers were generally not found on types of locos expected to do a lot of shunting. (There are exceptions to the above, but that became the general principle).

      Paul has been a supporter and volunteer at the SVR since his teenage years in the 1960s; however he was not a founding member at the Cooper’s Arm’s meeting. He has however been a director and chairman of SVR(H), and is a trustee of the SVR Charitable Trust. The crew are not being assessed by Paul.

      No problem Stuart. He isn’t assessing them; during an assessment an inspector would generally not get involved in any aspect of the loco operation. Paul is however providing some instruction and sharing his wealth of experience with the crew - who don’t have quite as many years on the footplate as Paul!

    Fantastic!! Just add some information about this place and this bridge. From Wiki: The cast-iron arch bridge has four arch ribs each of nine parts bolted together. The arch elements were cast by the Coalbrookdale Company and the bridge was built by Thomas Brassey, Samuel Morton Peto and Edward Betts. Opened for traffic on 31 January 1862, the railway line was closed to traffic in 1963. The bridge survived the threat of demolition and was then used by the Severn Valley Railway. In May 1974, heritage passenger services were re-introduced between Alveley Colliery and Bewdley over the Victoria Bridge. It was restored in 2004.

    What is the fireman doing when he adjusts some levers and then down the outside of cab. What is he looking for?

    • @Ben.Wright
      @Ben.Wright 3 роки тому

      Those levers are for the injectors, there is one on each side of the engine, below footplate level, close to the cab steps. The levers on the tender are for the water valves, and those in the cab for the steam valves. Inside the injectors a jet of steam is used to accelerate and then pressurise the water. This allows the pressurised water to enter the boiler via the clack valves, without the use of a pump. This allows the fireman to keep the water level in the boiler topped up. If there is too much water or not enough steam entering the injector, waste water will spill out of the overflow pipe (just under the cab steps). Similarly if there is too much steam or not enough water entering the injector, steam will exit the overflow pipe. You can sometimes see water or steam exiting the overflow pipe in other photos and videos of all locomotives. Wasting steam or water is not very efficient, so when the fireman is looking over the side he is checking to see if he has got the balance of water and steam correct so as not to waste any water or steam. If he sees anything coming out the overflow pipe he adjusts the settings of the valves to get the balance right so as not to waste anything.
