Somehow Avon wins everything. The end.
I tried my best but he was far from the most powerful!
@LordSlarr it's ok. He smiled and did something exceedingly clever off camera and won.
A useless person
Maybe I'm a minority but the animations good or not so are enough to get me to watch. The Toymaker, however is done way better than the others! I'm repeating what you've said about the cgi quality and the rest should be easy in comparison. TY!
I loved it and after all the negative reviews from people who hadn't even seen it I felt I was a right chump purchasing it. How wrong I was the animation was brilliant and stunning backdrops. In contrast watch the Ice Warriors Animation where they all looked the same. The audio is cleaned up and very crisp. The expressions were not robotic and detail such as the pattern on DoDos outfit was spot on, right down to the diamond tights. I hope they animate some Big Finish Adventures when they finish animating the rest of the missing episodes.
I’m going to defend this. I watched it the other day but made the decision to watch the whole colour, 16:9 animation for every episode and I enjoyed it. It doesn’t work when set alongside the existing episode 4, and that’s what I think the main issue is with the most recent animations. They’re no longer made to be faithful to the originals but exist as their own thing. When the animations began, they were very much designed to plug the gaps. I think animations like The Moonbase were absolutely perfect, almost like the telesnaps coming to life. And only missing episodes animated. The market has changed now. To my mind, the animators can only justify this if there is a top-drawer reconstruction to go alongside it, which this definitely has. I don’t know how I’d feel if this animation style was used on something like The Smugglers, but they get away with it here due to the surrealist nature of the story. The 4:3 black and white animation restricts it, if anything. I totally get why some people will hate this, but I’m surprised that I enjoyed this as much as I did, being a traditionalist.
Mr Tardis described Colin Baker as having 'anti-charisma' which I think fits quite well. I always thought he could carry a poor story. Another thing I love about Colin is that, in his brief tenure, he got to battle a lot of classic villains (he would have had the Ice Warriors and the Toymaker too had the show not been suspended). Vengeance on Varos is in my top ten from the classic era.
As a big enough Dalek fan to annoy my family: S: Power, Genesis, Dalek, Bad Wolf A: Revelation, Remembrance, Resurrection, The OG B: Day, Invasion of Earth, Evil, Master Plan C: Destiny, Planet, In Manhattan, Death To, Stolen Earth F: Victory, Doomsday, The Chase, Asylum, Magician's Apprentice, Into
Are we not mentioning that Peter Purves looks like literally any other white man other than Peter Purves?
Totally agree. I remember when it first came out it was all but mostly overlooked. I could not understand that at the time. At least now it is getting the recognition it deserves.
I like The King's Demons
If the human characters are barely watchable then I'm out. Surely the most important aspect of any story are the characters in it and how they relate on screen. I can see your positive points have validity, but I will never pay for a story where the characters are bordering on unwatchable. If others like it, I hope they enjoy the release. Each to their own.
I don't mind the more robotic-looking Cybermen since they look less vulnerable than the originals (which are indeed creepier looking) since those exposed human body parts and surgical tape look like easily exploitable weaknesses, which the more armoured Cybermen lack, however at the same time I'd rather they keep reminding people that they were once human (or humanoid at least) since it seems so easily forgotten. The robotic designs are fine, but the stories are what let them down. One thing a Cyberman story needs to get right is balancing out threat with mild horror. If we try to go with writing a good modern invasion story for the Cybermen (since those tend to be the ones that are most often mishandled) then I think it would have to be made clear through the Cybermen's own dialogue that they don't actually consider what they're doing to be an invasion or in any way bad. If anything, the Cybermen should announce themselves as if they're doing humanity a favour (not in really moral terms but the strict logical "What I'm doing is objectively to your benefit so refusal is illogical and will not be accepted" sort of way), but also being clever enough to anticipate refusal and already set up conversion factories on the Earth or wherever. If met with hostility, the Cybermen shouldn't actually start with violence and should actually dialogue first, only resorting to force when dialogue fails. Also, they really should have Cybermen use weapons with stun settings more rather than flat out killing anyone that refuses at first, because stunning would-be converts would be more beneficial than killing (killing would be a waste to the Cybermen - kill settings to weapons would probably be used on soldiers where stunning might be too risky). One thing Doctor Who does wrong with the Cybermen is making them too similar to Daleks, where they either take their time or shout catchphrases. This is okay for the Daleks since they are emotional and filled with hatred, but the Cybermen should be ruthlessly efficient in combat, speaking only when necessary and only really to communicate with other Cybermen, or maybe to offer conversion. Another thing is the fact that since Cybermen are converted humans, particularly using human brains, then Cybermen would have a lot more variation in terms of intelligence since not all humans are equal and the quality of human parts (especially brains) would be a factor. Not only that but as stated in video, the Cybermen should show some level of independent thought. A pure machine cannot generate ideas of its own; it can only copy whatever ideas have come before. Cybermen should lack this limitation, being able to actually think for themselves. Realistically, Cybermen would be both capable of independent thought from their human side and also capable of sharing data between them and accessing whatever hoarded knowledge and information the Cybermen have amassed as a collective from their machine side, effectively giving them the strengths of both and making them more threatening.
Very good analysis. I particularly like the interpretation of the Doctor becoming almost begrudgingly invested in Earth, even as he sees things he majorly disagrees with. Whilst I thought Delgado was great as the Master the show did go from its most openly experimental to, perhaps, its most formulaic. Something I've noticed is how different the colour and lighting, as well as music is in each serial. I am reminded (oddly) of the movie True Romance, in which each of the four acts is totally different in colour and tone; it's very seasonal (opens with a winter style and finishes in summer). The music shifts as well; personally I find the score in Ambassadors quite haunting. As a number of youtubers have pointed out, in this season the Doctor and the Brigadier have quite a turbulent relationship. There is the initial mistrust of Spearhead (Web of Fear esq), the diametrical opposition in the Silurians and then the professional, working relationship of Ambassadors (in this episode the Brig gets a taste of his own medicine when Carrington takes over). Going into the parallel universe allows the writers to further and explores a complete breakdown of this relationship. When they leave together at the very end of Inferno you can tell that they are Three and the Brigadier are finally good friends. Inferno is my personal favourite; part of it is seeing a Doctor who is fallible and can fail. We sort of get companion deaths (Liz doesn't return after this as well and my last strong memory of her is when the lava descends); not quite Adric, but much better than Clara or Peri's sendoffs. Also, the parallel universe allows us to explore other areas of the other regulars (think Jung's theory of the Shadow). It vies with Green Death for my favourite Pertwee story (special affection for the latter because I read the Target novel when I was eight). Honestly I think Pertwee is my favourite Doctor (two thirds of my first VHS stories had him in them). I just wish I could have seen him try Venusian karate on a cyberman.
Very informative review. What I don't get is why a college student working on his own (presumably on a much lower budget) can create a much better animation of this story than the official BBC effort. He only did episode one but it's excellent and much better than this.
Having now seen some of this version I have totally changed my mind. The animation is excellent. I would be more than happy to see all releases done like this now.
I will defend Army of Ghosts and Doomsday on one point, and that being that the Cybermen in those episodes really don't have any reason to be able to defeat post-Time War Daleks. The Cybermen in that episode had only really needed weapons that could kill humans, and the energy weapons the Preachers had only really needed to kill Cybermen which don't have shields like the Daleks did. It's really a very advanced variant of Dalek vs a very primitive variant of Cybermen which would obviously result in the Daleks kerbstomping them.
Lore-wise that makes sense but in terms of spectacle it makes it very unsatisfying. This was a crossover people had wanted for a very long time after all.
@@LordSlarr I think for that spectacle to have been achieved, they would have needed to bring back the Classic Cybermen and show how they've evolved since the Time War rather than resetting them from zero. Or have had more stories with the new Cybermen where they end up crossing over into our world, become more of an interstellar force, and build up their technology to the point where they'd realistically be a threat to the Daleks, before then having the Daleks and the Cybermen meet. I do agree by the way that the Cybermen were mishandled. EDIT: I just realised, even the Sontarans would probably defeated the Cybermen in Army of Ghosts and Doomsday... in fact, the Sontarans would probably have put up a better fight against the Daleks than the Cybermen did.
I always felt there was more gravity in a six parter; a bigger villain with more threat that took longer to overcome.
Well observed! RIP Uncle Terrance 👍
Good balanced review. Your video is a refreshing change from the toxicity expressed by others towards this animation and The Daleks in Colour. I enjoyed the latter and look forward to making up my own mind on the former when I receive the Steelbook. That said, I’m a big fan of the Dinopuff version! 😊
Thanks, although I will say I absolutely hated the butchering they did to The Daleks in the cut down colour version.
has it been deserving of all the negative reception?
I wouldn't say so. I can understand the initial reaction to seeing this style used again after the utter disaster Web 3 was, but having watched it, I didn't think it was all that bad and had plenty of good aspects. The character models for human characters are still shit though.
Agree RE Destiny of the Daleks. It was the last non-missing Dalek story from the classic series I watched (fourteen year old me "Oh goody, I've still got one more Dalek caper), and I don't think I ever came away from a Dalek story more disappointed. There might be technically worse ones in New Who, but I didn't feel as deflated after watching them (possibly because Destiny had already given me the treatment. Also, it marked the Dalek's subordination to Davros. Ok, that happened in Genesis, but it was an origin story. We wouldn't see the Daleks properly scheming again for years...
I remember the original - it was very dark and had bags of sinister atmosphere. This version looks like it'll be fun but it won't evoke these four episodes as I recall them.
You're probably quite right that it won't recapture the same tone but it definitely gets the sinister atmosphere spot on in this one.
Some people don't understand that 2d animated wont work on all doctor who stories if we want Marco polo done it well be done using 3d animation if they keep using 3 animated it will get better
I really don't think a story like Marco Polo would work in this style nor do I think given the budget the style has the potential to improve by very much. I'd rather stick with the recon than have a 3D animation with that story.
@@LordSlarr it might be the only way we get a season 1 box set if we ever get one because of uneathly child
Honestly, the animation looks like Facade, that game that a remake using AI would do a lot for (it was basically a chatbot) mixed with the Doctor Who VR game Though the Celestial Toymaker is such an interesting character, I wouldn’t mind some Big Finish or original animated episodes about him I would like more of the NPH Toymaker, give him an original song to sing!
any idea on when it should be out or were there any hints to the next one
Given it was finished the night before the screening it'll probably be a month or two until it's on DVD. As for future ones, there was know official confirmation of anything but I have heard from someone in the know there's one set to either be revealed or released in September. I'd treat that as just a rumour for now though. They said it's an obscure one so my guess based on pretty much nothing is The Savages.
@@LordSlarr could it be the smugglers
Personally this is the only one I'm really apprehensive (aside the original release of The Underwater Menace) about buying when it comes out (even if I let the price drop), it's clear after The Web of Fear debacle the BBC didn't learn that this mocap shit is a failed idea. I've always liked the reconstruction and I felt it worked really well for the story and if I had the choice I would be happy to keep the recon. I feel like this would be a case of I'd buy it because I need it, not because I want it, and that's not a good thing for any collector.
I understand the apprehension, I felt it before watching too. But I think this is worth a buy as there's clearly a lot of effort in this one and out of all the missing episodes, this is one where the style mostly works (main cast aside).
@@LordSlarr Yeah, I'll probably wait for the price to drop and a photo reconstruction will probably be included.
@@DVDandFilmBloke i think a reconstruction is included
@@teamsonicchannel4400 Yeah I gathered.
I've generally heard positive things about this animation so far. I hear the animation of Episode 3 in particular is a highlight. This story definitely will benefit from having it's visuals restored in some way. I agree that the character design on the main cast could be better, but I can give it a pass since this is the first full project being done in this style. I do hope that in the future they refine the process and make it look better on follow-up projects.
I hope they don't use this style again as I don't think any amount of refining will work on these character models. This one only got away with it because the toy characters are meant to be uncanny. Episode 3 was definitely the most improved from the recon as it's borderline unwatchable without the visuals to show what's actually going on!
@@LordSlarr hopefully they can improve from their less than ideal release of The Underwater Menace. Truly the first time I was disappointed with one of these animations.
Do we have a release date for this?
No idea. The animation was, according to Mark Ayers, finished at 6pm the night before the screening! And even that had a minute long unfinished section. So it'll probably be a month or two before they can get all the DVDs made.
I'm just happy to have the story represented on my dvd shelf, even if the animation isn't good I already loved the recon
I'd say the animation is just about good. It's really strong in some areas, really weak in others which just about evens things out.
@@LordSlarr where would you say its weak and strong
Was there a full coloured 3D N word?
How did you know?! That was the best part!
@@LordSlarr Yeah, a black dude dressed as an ante-bellum slave showed up just as the N word was said. Then, the Toymaker made him spin around, like a spinning top, whilst klapping and using him to write the N word on screen. It was pretty wild. 10/10
Yeah and it was followed by a brand new 4K Remastering of Song Of The South

Im not sure how to feel about this tbh. On the one hand, it was great to have the toymaker back and I enjoyed the stuff in his domain, though it was disappointingly brief. I liked the social commentry angle about how social media, like the giggle, can serve to remove poeples inhibitions / decancy, bringing out the worst in them and causing them to become tribal and extreme. But yeah the biregeneration stuff... I mean I'm not wild on the concept and it is very fanfic esque. I guess I can give some allowance to it when confined to this episode as it worked narritvely for 10 / 14's charcter, with him as the most human doctor finally getting the life he always pined for in episodes like school renuion and human nature. Though I do agree it absolutely undercuts Ncuti's debut. What I really cant stand though is the wider implication that it happened to all Doctors throughout time, it kills the dramatic weight of doctor deaths, e.g. 5's sacrafice in caves or 9's in parting of the ways. It feels like such a disneyfied decision to make not for the benefit of the storytelling, but so we can have old doctors in the show and spinoffs ad nausem no matter how old they get. If the story had just focused in on the core premise of the toymaker inserting himself into every screen since the dawn of television in order to bring out the worst in humanity, it could of been a really strong episode. As it stands, its another overstuffed finale with a lot of missed potential and wider implications that make me wary of the direction the show (or should I say franchise now?) is going in
Completely agree, it is so fanficy and has disastrous implications for the stakes in both past and current Doctor Who. Please can they just stop fucking with the lore?!
@LordSlarr Apparently not haha. The shows been up its own arse for too long now, and it's worth remembering that that attitude was one of the things that killed it off in the 80s
I personally enjoyed this story a lot but it really bothers me how suddenly Kate is being referred to as "Kate Lethbridge-Stewart" when it's been established she dropped the Lethbridge. If she was to decide to take that name back and use it professionally that would be fine but no episode exists where Kate does that so...??? There's no explanation for this thus far.
RTD probably just forgot!
Well i think hearing this back means i definitely need a new mic!
There seemed to be two episodes, one of which was about the Toymaker and was kind of weird campy fun, and one which was UNIT led fanwank and was less good. Also the giggle itself was superfluous beyond inciting the plot. This did feel like a soft launch for a new era of franchised who which i know worked for RTD before but I dont think has a strong footing based on what we've seen. The Sarah Jane Adventures and Torchwood filled very clear niches and had clear reasons for people to tune in. The Sarah Jane Adventures worked better in practice, but you can see where Torchwood was coming from, whereas i dont want to watch the inevitable UNIT show. Beyond that, I'm not totally sure who these specials and this episode in particular are for. My mam who has watched Doctor Who off and on since the 1970s, what you could call a dedicated casual fan, didn't like the Giggle at all, couldnt follow it, didn't like the bigeneration because it stank of a reactionary fear of not having Tennant in the back pocket. I was having enough fun not to hate it in the moment but i do agree with her assessment broadly and also think the basic rules the show runs on are important to give context to people who are jumping onto the show at any given point. Im not sure who these specials were for, i wish we'd just moved onto Ncuti, and let what the show can do speak for itself.
Completely agree. This episode only pleases a very niche segment of an already very niche fanbase and just mystifies the casual who'd only just started watching the show. It's so strange for RTD as he's usually got how to keep the casuals on board down to a tee, this felt like a Moffat or Chibnall misstep yet it was entirely RTD.
I personally enjoyed the giggle a lot, good discussion lads.
As an epilogue for Tennant's Doctor it's confusing but decent, however it should probably be his final major live action appearance, anything else would probably stretching it. With a new Doctor and fresh era about to start, finding a way to bring back all the old Doctors more regularly is a bizarre priority.
It's such a bizarre decision for a show which has clearly been held back by its obsession with itself. If you want old Doctors, there's Big Finish. The show must go on otherwise.
@@LordSlarr I think Big Finish put it best with My Own Private Wolfgang. It's a flawed but decent wrap up for David's Doctor and decent chuck of the others don't want to return so it's a unnecessary burden.
And another thought… did Tennant’s Doctor actually survive the beam by once again regenerating back into himself as well? Sort of looks like it.. that would make him the 10th, Metacrisis, sort of 10.1, 14 and 14.1… sorry I’ll shut up now…😆
So Tennant’s Doc lives on for many more years and eventually the regeneration happens, he becomes Ncuti, who then sort of beams back down the timeline to that point in 2023 where he emerges from Tennant? A bit like reverse version of the Watcher from Logopolis, is that it?
Why did the Galvanic beam not burn a hole in the Doctor? It can destroy a satellite in space… He appeared to have no mark from it at all? Ha ha … bit like how lightsabers do less damage these days? 😂
It hadn't recharged yet and the toymaker was using the very big gun just for show - the unit guns had been shooting rose-petals - so some energy to start the regeneration is easily summoned. And then it stopped: "Uhm... could you just ... PULL". In the Christmas Invasion he grew a new hand - here he grew a whole new body 😀
This is my least favorite of 14's specials. I don't like the bigeneration concept; a regeneration that doesn't change the Doctor but splits him into two, one of which lives a normal life with a companion. That's just Journeys End again, except 14 is still a Time Lord with his own TARDIS, so he can just be the Doctor again whenever he wants. My initial theory for why 14 has 10's face is that it was a subconscious response to the Master's forced regeneration, so they choose the face of the one that didn't want to change who would finally come to terms with it in this incarnation, giving closure to Tennant's Doctors. However, he gets to live without needing to change. All the ridiculous additions to regeneration lore like weaponizing regenerative energy I can tolerate, but the aspect of permanent change has to always remain and bigeneration just circumvents it. At least the Metacrisis thing had negative consequences, which this has none. I don't have an opinion on Ncuti's Doctor yet. While it is cool that he got to have more screentime than the new Doctor usually does in a regeneration story, 15 doesn't leave much more of an impression than if he just appeared in the last few minutes of the episode. It's still very much 14's story so 15 just feels like a supporting character. On a positive note, I think Neil Patrick Harris gave an unforgettable performance. I just wish the episode was a bit longer to showcase this. The Giggle is also a great concept and commentary, but not explored as well as it could have. It's just fixed and we don't get to see the aftermath.
Great concept ruined on a lore dump episode where the lore overshadows the interesting plot.
