Chlorine is used by water treatment facilities throughout the world to purify the water pumped into our homes, we swim in pools that have it in the water, we clean our laundry with it, and there are countless other everyday uses as well. So when used properly, chlorine (sodium hypochlorite) can be a very safe product. However, as with any product, there are risks and ways to mitigate them. The key in this type of scenario is to wet surrounding vegetation before, during and after application. Equally important, is to use the appropriate dilution ratio. That being said, I would never advise using chlorine solutions in the presence of children and/or pets. If all work has been completed in a professional manner, any associated areas should be completely safe afterward. Hope that helps…

That is an age-old question in the industry and is a case-by-case scenario. In most cases, most contractors will leave it to the rain. However, there are times when it is advantageous to rinse. For example, there may be light rain forecast or a particular area benefit from rinsing, that is where experience comes into play.

Yes, we use sodium hypochlorite in our cleaning solution to kill the organic matter.

Regardless of the roof, you’re going to use a 50/50 mix of Sodium Hypochlorite and water. Depending upon the strength you can get your hands on, either 10% or 12%, you’ll be applying about a 5-6% solution strength. With the right surfactant, I use SloMo, you should only ever need one application on a shingle roof, neglected tile roofs will require a second hit though.

What size pressure washer you using?

I look at each wood restoration project on a case by case basis, and not as if there is a one size fits all approach. If there is a lot of algae, I may choose to use sodium hypochlorite. In other scenarios, sodium hydroxide is more appropriate. It just depends upon the scenario, and if I find another good example, I may drop another video showing another process.

Thanks! Since this was considered beyond repair, and it was only getting cleaned to make it look better until the new fence gets installed, I only used SH. If this were a true wood restoration job, I would have neutralized with oxalic.

The van is nothing special, it's just another pressure washing rig. If you have a pressure washer and a 12v soft wash system, your rig is plenty capable as well. I don't care to feed the obsession with the latest shiny gadgets, I'd much rather encourage fellow washers invest more heavily into things that will make their business successful. I have some ideas for upcoming content, and I'm working on a few things, but it won't be equipment related. The most impressive rig on the planet will just sit in the driveway if the phone isn't ringing. That awesome equipment will cost you a fortune if you don't know how to maintain/repair it...and it's hard enough for most people to get a business off the ground, but do they know how to scale it? Whenever I post videos with fellow washers in mind, this will be the main focus...all without paying for course/subscription.

My rig is setup for pretty much anything. Of course, it has a pressure washer, which is equipped with a downstream injector and a FlowPro. There is a 12v system in there too, along with a DI system for window cleaning. However, this particular video, the entire project was done with a downstreamer. So don't ever think you absolutely need a blend manifold, 12v pump, etc. just to get a job done...even some of the really bad ones.

I do not track the exact amount used on every job. As a general rule, if I am going to add a 3,000 square foot roof to a job, I’ll make sure that I have at least 30 gallons of reserve. Some roofs take more than others, due to various factors like pitch, so it’s not an exact science. Luckily, chlorine is plentiful and easily accessible here in Florida, so I’m more concerned with filling my tank each morning than with how much I use.

No, I have not had a post-treatment kill the grass. The only way that would happen is if overspray were to hit dry grass…and no effort were made to rinse affected areas.
