Hunting the Top Predator MUSKY MADNESS (Part 2) #bigfish #musky #fishingadventure
Part 2!! This is the second part of this trip besure to check out part one! When targeting musky or any trophy fish its important to understand and know you are always going to catch less when specifically targeting big fish. This trip we went 3 days with nothing to show meanwhile boats around us are boating fish. It's all part of the fun and makes the next fish that much more exiting! Sorry about the delay. . . Been dealing with some computer issues lately and am upgrading big time so there shouldn't be anymore issues. Appreciate the support! This is a big edit and takes alot of time.
Part 1 Description
This is one trip I look forward to every year and it's so special to me because it's with two really good friends. We set out and chase after the elusive musky ! So much fun so many laughs and so much grinding! It's super cool to me to be able too see how much I've learned and gotten better at videography in just the span of one year! This is with out a doubt the biggest project I have had yet! In this video I played around with some voice over as well so let me know what you think.

  • @TheAnglingOracle

    Mac, thanks for engaging folks with regards to whether fishing for muskies deep is safe or not. First off, I do have a MSc in fisheries science (thesis related to deep pelagic species), so I have handled a lot of fish caught deep. Yes, muskies and pike are physostomous, but the duct connection of esocids is not as primitive as those of the trout family. They can belch, but they are often are unable to and do blow up a significant percentage of the time. The reason for the failure to belch is unclear (without a necropsy), but likely due to simply having food or pressure of the bladder itself pinching off the connection I have seen it a lot in gillnet pike brought up from deep water, and in angling for pike (and they become supper where legal). In fact, some the fish caught in your video (and those of fish in other people's musky/pike videos caught deep), although appearing "fat" in many cases that is just the inflated air bladder pushing outwards - in some cases it may just be mild. When releasing such fish, they will tend to be more buoyant on the surface. Very fortunately it does appear that all your fish released well and hopefully there was no ill effects - but definitely not worth the gamble and not ethical given not fish that you can legally kill. The bottom line is that there are very few large muskies, and those that exist take a very long time to reach those sizes, so it is not worth the risk to fish deep for them. Even if bloated fish are able to descend, the barotrauma effect (expanding gas bubbles in bladder and other tissues, including eyes) does cause damage to the fish which may cause delayed mortality or cause other short-term or irreversible damage that may impede growth or reproductive potential. Note that there is really is no need to fish deep for muskies late season given their prey moves shallow, just a matter of timing things right. PS. I am also anti-FFS with regards to fishing muskies - but that is another discussion with regards to how effective it is - specifically in these open and deep water scenarios.

    • @MacMulligan
      @MacMulligan 12 днів тому

      Very well said I appreciate that greatly. I plan to make a video about decending fish as well to hopefully spread awareness so in the event someone has a fish with air issues they can have a better chance at releasing it back to where it came from

    • @TheAnglingOracle
      @TheAnglingOracle 12 днів тому

      @@MacMulligan Thanks Mac. Yes, descending devices are better than leaving a fish dying on the surface (through "drowning" which happens when they are upside down for a long period time, or from predation), so a good thing to have for a bloated fish of any species, particularly physosclists (bass, walleye, etc). The issue with pike and muskies is that if they don't have enough energy to get to depth and stay down on their own, they merely continue to exhaust themselves and float to the surface. Muskies and pike are susceptible to tonic immobility when upside down (a form of involuntary paralysis) which the air bladder bloating essentially forces upon the fish. Warm water conditions obviously will exacerbate things given oxygen uptake will be reduced as well as other temperature related enzymatic processes being accelerated in comparison to the depth the fish originated from. Large muskies are too precious to be targeted deliberately at depth given it is too risky, regardless of good intentions. This is especially true of our naturally reproducing populations that are irreplaceable. We do lose likely a fair few through "normal" fishing methods, there is no need to add to that mortality when it is avoidable by fishing shallow. Shallow I would say under 25 feet when fishing with bottom depths of up to 30 feet, and under 15' when over 30' (the latter situation still risky). In both cases when hooking the fish, do try and bring the fish up slowly, although unlike pike, muskies tend to come up more quickly on their own. These scenarios are not risk free (still around 1 atmosphere pressure), but deeper is definitely elevating the risk significantly. Thanks again.

    • @alexdenniston970
      @alexdenniston970 14 днів тому

      Genuine question, I don't live near musky. I understand the barotrauma issue with most species, is that the case here?

    • @MacMulligan
      @MacMulligan 13 днів тому

      I'm not fully certain eather. I spoke with several other guides on the northwest angle and both told me that the musky have the same capabilities to release pressure (Burp) as lake trout do so I was assured they could burp. I did some research and from what I found it all lined up in agreement that musky can indeed burp. The whole jigging bite was something none of us had ever done before. Jp included so it was a big learning curve for all 3 of us as anglers. This video shows the learning curve we went through during this trip. I'd definitely like to learn more information about how the musky do with the pressure change tho. Although I can assure you that we did have the proper decending devices on board in the event we needed to use one to decend a fish. Out of the 4 musky we boated none had any sighn of air issues or caused any of us to worry about there well-being.
